One suggestion would be to provide a brief written page/summary of the days events & be sure everyone knows ahead of time of any adjustments in timing of events. Thanks overall great job! This was our first trip overseas, and we are so glad we went with a tour group. We didn't have to worry about anything once we got on the plane. Our driver/guide, Nigel, was so impressive in the way he was able to navigate through busy narrow streets. He knew alternative routes that would help us avoid the worst rush hour traffic. The best thing about Nigel, though, was the stories and history he told about the area. We would never get that just driving ourselves around. His love of Ireland and Dublin was infectious. He had the right touch of humor, personality, and properness. We were able to get right into all of the places we visited. Tickets were ready, no standing in line, and a guide ready to give us some background. Checking into hotels was also streamlined, no waiting. I would love to do another CIE Tour, and if I go back to Ireland, I would love to be on a trip with Nigel!

We were very pleased with our tour throughout Ireland. We covered a lot of ground in 10 days, which was what we wanted. We wanted to see as much as possible. The choice of visited sights was a good mix to hit varied interest levels. Outside of some meals, most of the events were included in the tour price. The bus was clean and comfortable and our guide/driver was knowledgeable, personable, and humorous. We appreciated staying on schedule so we didn't miss out on any sight-seeing. I highly recommend CIE Tours for Ireland. It's a great trip!

He got a bit testy as the trip went on, and made me uncomfortable when he scolded us in front of the other travelers. He told me he's been doing CIE tours for 23 years and I think he's tired of answering the same questions over and over. Our driver, Brian, was excellent. I wish we had more Irish music in this tour, especially something from Turlough O'Carolan, and maybe a few words said about Francis O'Neill, but not everybody is a musician. We can take care of that from this side of the big pond. Once again, so much beauty! This tour was an excellent overview of many places, which was exactly what we needed, but next time we will probably concentrate on a single location. There were so many places in which we wanted to spend more time, but there was always so much more to see! I guess this means we will have to come back many times. MOST of the arrangement CIE made for us were good. The only thing we didn't like about our self-drive holiday was feeling somewhat "adrift" upon our arrival in Dublin. The instructions for catching the CIE shuttle should say "Terminal 2", not just "T2", which is meaningless to the uninitiated. We had no instructions as to where to pick up our CIE "swag bag" (luggage tags, backpack, rain poncho, etc), but when we asked at the front desk of the Dublin hotel, they had it there. However, they did not have the "Your go to Guide", which we were supposed to receive, and I can only assume contained more information about the places listed in the suggested itinerary. Fortunately I'd done a lot of research and brought my own guidebooks so we didn't really miss the booklet. The driver of the Irish Odyssey coach tour that was running at the same time was helpful to us in all of this, but it wasn't really part of his job since we weren't on his tour.

CIE Has Changed

By: BASmith

Reviewed on: 27 Aug 2019

In 2006 I participated in a CIE tour of Ireland - the itinerary and hotels were excellent. Since then, it is abundantly clear that CIE has changed and not necessarily for the better. Either the management has undergone some drastic changes or perhaps some changes are coming up which precludes utilizing better hotels and paying closer attention to age appropriate activities. During this recent trip, there were issues with each and every hotel for more than one participant. Rooms had to be switched around on more than one occasion for the same hotel. While it's always nice to stay in a castle, when you have to climb 4 flights of stairs to reach your room and you have two full replaced knees and are over 71 years old, the choice of hotel is totally age inappropriate. Some of the activities required a great deal of walk on uneven ground, up and down hill, plus stairs. One would think that CIE's management would be capable of adapting the activitity itinerary when age is known.

We would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to see the 'real Ireland', as well as, the highly revered Irish tourist attractions. One thing that CIE could do to make it easier for the travelers to provide more comprehensive reviews is to give out the final review forms at the beginning of the trip so that they can be filled out along the way. He repeated significant information several times which I think was helpful for gathering and departure times and meeting locations. I selected this tour because it covered so much of the country including northern Ireland, the Giant's Causeway and Newgrange which aren't included in many trips. My only suggestion would be to give us free time after lunch (with dinner on our own) so that we have more free time to explore.

Keeping in mind my recent tour was a sampler, it lived up to its title. However, I felt I spent more time traveling then actually enjoying the places I visited. I did take into account the possibility of inclement weather but better options needed to be put in place to compensate missing out on activities, especially the food walking tour which consisted of an off the beat pub and then coffee and dessert somewhere else where we were rushed in and out. Not to mention that our guide although a lovely young lady admitted she knew little if no history of Belfast but plenty about the pubs and club scene. Also there was no need to repeat nearly identical (long) vaudeville type shows in Ireland and Scotland especially since most travelers were required to be ready at 6:30am the next morning for lengthy return flights home.

Ireland in the fall

We felt that CIE had a couple of important missing links in their tour. We had paid for transportation from the airport to the hotel and paid more than double what the taxi rate said on the meter. When we arrived at the airport we had to call the company they used and another driver was kind and called for us so we didn't have to kick in the $10 international phone fee for the day. The hotel they used was way north of Dublin so we were stuck there for a day and a half. Miserable beds in that hotel but they did get us into a room in the morning which we appreciated after traveling all night. The trip was advertised as no more than 24. We had 25. They advertised everyone would have a window seat but they assigned seats and tried to keep everyone in the front half of the bus. We ended up going in the back so my husband and I would each have a window. It worked out ok. The last day in Dublin was on our own and you had to take public transportation back to the hotel which was 7 miles away.

The itinerary and hotels were good. Sometimes the daily schedule was a bit "loose." We knew the itinerary each morning, but lunch times were allusive. Often lunch wasn't until 2pm. On the last day, the driver/tour guide opted to give the group a tour of the city, arriving at the hotel at 5:30pm even though the group had to leave at 6:30pm for the farewell dinner. Because we had an early morning flight and the farewell dinner wouldn't return us until 11pm, we had to skip it. Meals in the hotels were OK but we opted to skip several of them to eat on our own at local restaurants to experience the local cuisine. At least they separated our large group (42 travelers) into 2 buses. I was surprised that with CIE's required proof of vaccination no one every checked our vaccine cards. Cie provides an adequate tour for unseasoned travelers, but the quality and organization does not match Globus tours.

His knowledge of the area was amazing & he filled us with lots of history along the way as well as at our destination. We wished this had been our experience the whole trip. Our guide was nice enough but just not as knowledgeable. Others on our tour noticed the difference immediately as they had traveled with CIE prior. The reason we will try again. Most of the hotels were fine but one could be upgraded. The itinerary included a tour that no longer exists so this time was filled with shopping. Galmonts a little off square which I would have preferred to be closer.

This was our first time using CIE Tours. We had a great experience!!! Prior to the trip, we received a booklet with photos of our itinerary with some goody bags! Once we arrived, our private driver met us at the airport and made the whole trip so wonderful for us! Our driver, John, was so knowledgable and provided so much history and made our trip so much more enjoyable. The trip was very organized and all our accommodations were excellent!

The highlight of our trip was our hired driver/guide, Dermott Walsh. I have never experienced anyone so determined to make our trip the best it could be. In addition to being an excellent driver/guide, Dermott went up and beyond to help us with dinner reservations/recommendations, alter our trip based on weather or geography, providing us with entertainment on long drives and always checking in on us to make sure we ok even when he was done for the day. I highly recommend Dermott and will make sure to request him on my next trip.

It was a beautiful country, the people were very friendly. I couldn't get over how free of trash snd liter this country was. The history of the country is amazing. A real eye opener. No complaints at all. Well done. I would highly recommend this tour.

First, the guides, hotels, and entertainment were excellent. We were able to see a number of castles and special places in Scotland and Ireland. However, we spent a lot of time on the bus and there wasn’t as much free time to explore the towns. Everything seemed a little rushed. So my reservation is you’d better like bus rides and structure.

I had a positive experience with CIE tours for my recent trip to Scotland. The guides were very helpful and informative. They were able to quickly substitute a different day trip when plans had to be changed at the last minute due to a storm which closed our original site. I would recommend this company and would book a trip with them again in the future.

I cannot say enough good things about Colm Willis! He was THE BEST person to introduce us all to Ireland.. He was incredibly knowledgeable and shared his experience in a most interesting and personal way. From family life to politics to culture and everything in between, we learned about “how things worked”” and saw sights we stopped at with humorous, serious and historical background. Colm kept us entertained and “in-line/informed” about where we were going, where the bus would be parked, how long we had to visit, when dinner would happen and where, what time we had to have our bags packed, and what we would be doing/seeing on a daily basis!! I think I still miss him two weeks after being home! I really cannot say enough about this extraordinarily, charming and caring man. We all loved his caring ways!! It was truly an “Irish Odyssey” to remember!!
