The Cunard line is our favorite ship line. We are particularly fond of the Queen Mary 2, although we have been on the Queen Victoria and enjoyed it very much, also. We take a cruise every couple of years and it is almost always on a Cunard ship.

My wife and I recently made the crossing on QM2 from New York to Southampton.  It was our first "cruise."  We were completely satisfied with the experience and are discussing doing it again in a few years, next time from England to the US.  If your idea of a happy holiday is to stay in flip-flops, shorts, and T-shirts morning, noon, and night, or if you have small children in need of constant amusement, or if you want to be entertained with rock bands, then QM2 is not for you.  The clientele is definitely older, although we saw lots of kids from infants to teenagers, and young couples.  Handicapped people will find access to every part of the ship.  The crew is phenomenal, helpful, cheerful, etc.  Food and staterooms are excellent.  Lots to do, but all that you must do is show up for supper at your seating.  Utterly relaxing.  We loved everything about it.

The remastering of the Kings Court was very well done. We had good service with the breakfast "egg man" who soon learned how my wife liked her egg. i was disappointed in the selection of lecturers on this cruise. "Fashion Week" on the westbound crossing did not have any interest. Jon Sobel gave 2 very informative talks. The ship was cold! My wife wore a sweeter and jacket every time she left the cabin.

Nice ship

Lovely ship. Great cabin steward...always clean and very personable guy. Personnel in the King's Court always seemed to be preoccupied with something else. Witnessed several of the workers run into passengers while they were trying to clear tables, etc. Personnel with carts would never stop for oncoming passenger traffic and keep going whether they ran into you or came close. While eating breakfast several days, personnel proceeded to try to clear and move empty tables to set up for lunch buffet....very disruptive and safety hazard trying to move while still a lot of passenger traffic.....wouldn't it be wiser/safer to move the tables BEFORE breakfast and not risk the hazard?? Would only displace approximately 16 passengers and there are plenty of seats without those. Entertainment and lecturers were good but not exceptional or fabulous.

We had a lovely time on our recent trans-Atlantic crossing on the QM2. The dining staff and other employees were very helpful and friendly. The ship is beautiful. Since we were also on the ship for an additional week of touring the British Isles, we were able to experience some of their shore excursions. I feel that this was their weak link. The tour sites were very interesting but the scheduling to get the passengers on and off on tender required days was very disappointing. They did not seem to have the personnel ready to check the passengers in and get them to the tenders which meant long waiting lines just to get into the areas to wait for your turn to leave the ship. I am sure this problem will be corrected. Other than that, our experience was delightful.

The Bloom is Off the Rose

By: Steamboat Bill

The ship seemed crowded with more passengers and fewer crew. Service and was not up to Cunard's usual high standards. The refrigerator in our room stopped working and the A/C vent produced a stream of black soot which settled on the bed, but two requests for service, one to the purser, one to our room steward, were ignored. The cabin curtain was too narrow and let light in. Buying a piece of chocolate at the new Godiva Chocolate Bar was a convoluted affair. You were supposed to sit down at a table and order from a menu. Reconfigured King's Court is just as confusing as the old King's Court. There is nothing to distinguish the serving stations. We were dozing in deck chairs when one of the ship's photographers woke us to take our pictures. Did not seem like a luxury cruise. More Carnival than Cunard.

I availed myself of the services of the accpuncturist in the spa, and he has given me a new life. We really enjoyed Cunard's Queen Mary 2 transatlantic-NYC to Southampton. Some cruises have a special theme and we had the National Symphony Orchestra. They held three concerts-all outstanding. Regular ship's entertainment was among best we've seen. Ship's dancers and singers, string quartets, concert pianist, harpist, lectures on various topics, bridge and poker, etc.--it was all nicely done. Formality was higher-three formal nights and men in jackets every night (without tie is OK)-if you want to stay informal no problem-just eat in buffet. Enjoyed the balls associated with formal nights, especially masquerade ball. Dancing every night. Our cabin was nice but next time a balcony. Food was good but not a standout. Shopping wasn't as extensive as we've seen-couple higher end shops. Ship just wasn't as crowded as we have experienced on other cruise lines (Viking is best we've seen but quite a bit smaller). Check in was slow, slow! We were too busy to miss having port visits.

Having sailed the Atlantic 3x on QM2 - this cruise was a very different experience. A whole different vibe - in some ways not unlike the several other cruises we were on with other lines. Yet this "cruise" on the QM2 was at a much higher level in both character and quality - as one would expect of the QM2. The shore excursions were head and shoulders above any others we have been on. These were not just short scenic bus rides and then extended "shopping." We actually spent the whole time visiting new places and having interesting experiences - and we did and saw some fascinating things. Best "cruise" we have ever been on!! It'a a very nice ship, offers an array of activities (lectures, shows, classes, etc.) and the service is very good. But two things stand out. One is the quality of the food, particularly the seafood. We consistently had superb fish and in the buffet area I had the best mussels ever - better than even in Belgium. The other thing that stands out is the type of passengers. They are for the most part mature individuals from a number of countries. You will not find a bunch of children running everywhere or out of control young people. This is basically a ship with a lot of class.

Queen Mary 2--Mixed Review

By: Anonymous

Reviewed on: 04 Dec 2017

I returned from the QM2 and was very glad to arrive in NYC on Nov. 26. While the ship is beautiful, the service impeccable, and the food delicious, the crossing had several serious disappointments. I was disappointed with the entertainment, lectures, etc. I felt that the program was too "science oriented," and the program did not take into account the age and background of the passengers; e.g., one of the major programs featured portions of musicals which included Miss Saigon and many pictures of the Vietnam era which were very inappropriate for the audience. I did not applaud, and I saw that many others did not, either. Also, I felt that the motion pictures were not age appropriate for their intended audience. I would estimate that 80+% of the passengers were over 60, and much of the entertainment was geared to a younger and more active audience. In conclusion, while I liked my stateroom and the food and service were excellent, I would probably not do another crossing.

Service, food, and decor were very good. We like sea days so this journey gave us enough time to unwind and enjoy a lot of down time with feeling guilty. There are numerous public areas and there is plenty of places you can socialize or just find a quiet spot to read (the ship's library is incredible and well worth a visit). This form of travel is certainly worth considering considering you can get seven nights accommodation and meals for the price of a first class plane ticket without the jet lag.

We did a eastbound crossing on the QM2 with a CUNARD transfer to the QE in Southampton with another CUNARD transfer back to the QM2 for the westbound crossing. My real complaint with the QM2 is that I've expressed to CUNARD; the inability to use a nightlight in the bathroom. The outlet is connected to the light and when the light is off, so is the outlet. The service on the QE was outstanding.

Easier than flying across the Atlantic plus the benefits of a cruise without having to go ashore. Sadly, for some of us, QM2 dress code standards have declined with the times (viz. black tie). Live music of all kinds was excellent (on this crossing it included a small but decent symphony orchestra). The specialty restaurant was a disappointing and badly run steakhouse , a french one having been closed. Another sign of the times? Virtuoso kindly gave us one free pass to it (and hosted a reception for its clients). Dining room fare was okay but below that on some other four and five star lines. (Perhaps it is better in the premium dining room.) Buffet fare was superb. Embarking and disembarking went very smoothly. Cunard's transfer from London to Southhampton was awkward and inconvenient. Going by train is much quicker and more comfortable. Transfer from ship to airport in New York was excellent.

On evenings that were not formal, passengers dressed appropriately. I believe that the environment aboard the ship encourages passengers to put their best food forward in the evening. There's nothing like a transatlantic crossing

By: Richard

Reviewed on: 29 Dec 2018

If you need to cross the Atlantic, and can spend a week doing so, crossing on the QM2 is the only way to go. There are lots of price points, from inside staterooms to grand duplexes. But the whole ship is at everyone's disposal; so no matter what stateroom you have, everyone enjoys the same amenities. Amazingly, a ship with 2000 passengers and 1000 staff never feels crowded. There's far more to do than any one can manage in a week, and you won't be bored -- from terrific restaurants and afternoon tea to ballroom dancing, and from fencing lessons to cocktail classes -- and did I mention the spa? There's always a good mix of passengers and you can be sociable or enjoy time to yourself, whatever you wish. But you do need to like dressing up, including the 3 formal nights on a crossing. That formality is part of what makes a QM2 crossing so civilized, and such a welcome respite from busyness of everyday life. Highly recommended -- a one of a kind experience.

While the ship is big with many venues, it never feels crowded. Service in Queen’s Grill is impeccable, from the butlers to the dining room staff. Entertainment was generally good with some very good acts. Some lecturers were better than other, again with some notable standouts. Transatlantic lecturers were weaker than in past crossing. Ports of call were very good with several overnight stops. More overnights would be good. Carnival influence seems to be increasing, adding a “corporate” element that is not necessarily a plus. Let hope it does not dilute a great brand. The test will come when the next Queen is launched in 2021. At this point, we would gladly sail on QM2 and other Cunard Queens.

Long Live the QM2!

Much is made about the fact that the QM2 is an ocean liner, not a cruise ship. I didn't realize what the distinction meant until I was able to abandon the scopolamine patches I usually use for sea sickness. This grand ship is as stable as sitting in my living room. Even in a rough North Sea with gale force winds, our ride was incredibly smooth. The ship is traditionally luxurious and scrupulously clean. One of the best things about the crossings is the availability of live music at many venues around the ship. We were serenaded by a string ensemble during High Tea, relaxed to a harpist over a soda in a lounge, and enjoyed recitals by world class pianists and a classical guitarist. A highlight of our time aboard was the English National Ballet joining us for the Southampton to NYC crossing. We were able to watch these talented artists practice several times and enjoyed a magical night at the ballet on our last formal evening.

Our time aboard was mostly positive. We were unused to so many formal nights and the need to dress for dinner every night, but we adhered to the dress code out of respect for our fellow passengers. It does create a sense of occasion, but having so many gala nights (often 3 a week) makes them seem less special. I did have one problem that I believe may be related to the strict dress code. I have a lung condition severe enough that I'm required to use supplemental O2. I'm also very sensitive to chemical smells. When people dress up, they also tend to slather on more cologne, perfume and aftershave than usual. Getting into an elevator was often problematic for me because of the potent mix of strong smells. And the first time I opened the closets in our stateroom, the miasma of perfumes past was overpowering and never went away. But this is a problem that's specific to me and may not trouble other passengers at all.

Ship is excellent, especially since the refurbishment in 2016. We had been on her for more than a month that January and then did a TA in September and it was quite a difference. She is a true ocean liner and the only one I would take when rough seas are expected. We sailed on her through the strait of Magellan and she was stable as anything, and again in a storm in the North Atlantic in January. This current cruise was smooth sailing and no rough weather, but we had to alter the itinerary to avoid an area that contained many of the endangered Right wales. Because of her capacity for speed, she was able to make up much of the time, so that our time in Sept-Iles was able to be extended. The staff on board are very attentive, even to those in Britannia class. The ship is kept spotless and everything appears to happen seamlessly. Bravo Cunard, keep up the good work.
