This trip was my 6th with Holland America and all of them have been exceptional. We couldn't ask for better service from the cabin stewards to the bar and dining staff to the Cruise Director. We like the fact that the Holland America ships are not as large as some of the other cruise lines. The optionals that are offered in the various ports give a good variety of things to see and do. We always look to Holland America first when planning a trip - have never been disappointed.

Wanted to try a different cruise line. Found Holland America to be similar to Princess. Took daughters, not enough for younger women to do. Food was good, not great. Ship was clean, help was okay. Happy with LuAnn from All World Travel, she always does what she can to please me. Restaurant where we had 2 free meals was a joke (food-wise, help-wise).

Food is fair in main dining room and excellent in Pinnacle and Canaletto. If you like activity, this is one for you. On our Panama Canal cruise there were perhaps more sea days than we would have liked. There are many excursions to choose from for each port of call which is a good thing. Costa Rica was exceptional. Unfortunately there is no tour of the Synagogue in Curacao and this has to be done privately. Our driver just left us there alone for about 20 minutes. The Synagogue charged $10. and provided a brochure but there was no guide which was unfortunate. Virtuoso should do research and have a contact person for those who wish to include this in their visit.

While this is not 5 star cruising, nor all inclusive, it is dramatically a few levels up from being on a megaship with 3 to 5,000 people. This ship was at about 1800 guest and you never felt it, no idea. It very much felt like we were on a ship with 500 to 700. Never a crowd/never a wait. Neptune suites are the best for room size and amenities, free laundry to a dedicated staff of two excellent concierges in the neptune lounge, access only to neptune suite guest. In the lounge there are various food presentation from breakfast through tea time and evening canapes. Fresh beverage hot and cold always available. For me a down side that they are not open late evenings for a night cap of espresso and a sweet or two. Pinnacle Grille, the up charge restaurant at $29/person, is the finest. Worth much more and better than the no charge premium dinning of several of the all inclusive smaller ships. Over all and incredible value for the dollar, Holland America is working hard to "get it right

Some things I was not excited about was the access to the front and back of the ship on Decks #2 and #3. The Zuiderdam was built in 2002 and is a sister to the Oosterdam, Noordam, Eurodam family. With about 2000 passengers she is on the larger side, but still with a comfortable feel. HAL does a great job with cabin design - warm colours, well appointed and of a good size. The ship is scheduled for a refit in the next couple of years but still is very comfortable. There is the standard Vista dining room with fixed or open seating while the Pinnacle Restaurant and Canelletto are specialties. As with many cruise ships on the seas today, internet connections are dicey. It is an obvious money maker for the cruise lines but in todays world the spotting quality and slow speed of the connection leaves much to be desired. Let's hope HAL makes some progress on this in the near future.

The seas were a little scary but the crews made us feel safe with their competency. Excitement and Entertainment: The Holland America Singers and Dancers were great each evening that they performed. We really enjoyed the "Beatlemania" husband and wife team that led us in some old favorites from the 60s and 70s. The Celtic Storm performers were unbelievable, especially given that most of the members of the group were so young! From arriving early in Ft. Lauderdale, to disappointment with staff of Zuiderdam, the entire experience shows just how HAL has deteriorated over the years. From replacing happy, efficient, capable staff from Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan with careless, dour staff from the Philippines, middle east and ?former Russian? Colonies is obviously a financial decision. The near total elimination of smoking aboard ship presumably based on health concerns is another farce. More people die from alcohol than smoking, yet HAL held at least a dozen events promoting alcohol while eliminating smoking from all areas of the ship, including the casino, except for a severely crowded approximately 250 sq ft area on the back of deck 9. Lack of wheelchairs, and staff having no idea of need that was reported to HAL prior to cruise? Elimination of open-close times of shops, bars, casino, etc. from the daily schedule was another headache......especially since the concierge didn't know these times either!

The staff were, without exception, very friendly and welcoming. My one criticism was I had difficulty accessing the internet on the ship. The staff tried, but was unable to help me, and I was frustrated. Somebody should be responsible for handling information technology issues for passengers. We hit some stormy weather and the Captain said we were unable to pull into Limon, Costa Rica where we were scheduled to make a stop. I trust his judgment that he didn't want to put us at risk. The waves were intense. Frankly, that added to my enjoyment of the cruise. The captain kept us well informed of the weather developments, and I applaud him for that. If they did they would send tickets to room and cancel our booked tour. Result, another bus was put on and tickets arrived late, both tours charged. Realized double charge after disembarking. Entertainment was generally good but ship cast shows uneven. Staff excellent.

Second time even better than first

This was our second time on Zuiderdam. We loved it the first time, but after the updates, wow! I have no criticism. The staff is attentive and goes overboard to make sure we're taken care of. The food is delicious and we love BB King!
Just refurbed, nice small ship

Not a lot of frills, but just enough for a relaxing vacation. The refurb was well done in October 2017, but some areas still show the age (very subtle, and doesn't impact your holiday). This ship is perfect for those who love to stroll the promenade, sit by the pool, enjoy the spa, or spend most time off ship. If you want the ship to schedule your vacation, choose another ship.

The entertainment and food was good, but the organization for the emergency drill was very poor and the manner of going to the excursions was not too good

Very pleasant. Staff was wonderful. Offerings on ship were wonderfully varied.

This was our first cruise on HAL, chosen for the itinerary. We're not yet loyal to any particular cruise line, but we tend to favor Celebrity. HAL is now a close runner-up! We thoroughly enjoyed the elegance of the Zuiderdam, and are grateful for the mature, drama-free cohort that tends to cruise HAL.

Mom's birthday cruise

This was my parents' first time cruising and they LOVED it! They want to do it again. They liked dressing up for gala nights more than they thought they would. Loved the service and hospitality. They enjoyed the excursions, although wished they had more time off shore to explore. They loved the food and all the on board activities--shows, fitness center, walking deck, etc. They loved their room--they had a verandah on the 10th floor, port side.

As with other Holland America ships, the service was always excellent. Unfortunately, they have been selling their older, smaller ships and I miss that smaller, more intimate size. The food was delicious and in the right portions. And I loved the band in the BB King Blues Club. Sadly, the company is getting away from some of its roots. I missed not having the Indonesian lunch they had always prepared in the past and they did not have their staff carve their beautiful ice sculptures for the passengers to ooh and aah over.

Pleasing decor, clean, comfortable and many amenities. We especially appreciated the room-service breakfasts on days with early shore-excursions.

The Zuiderdam is a great ship. Capt. Bart is an excellent Captain and kept us up to date with the various storms we encountered on this cruise. Holland was very nice to offer a discount on our next cruise since we missed 3 ports of call & none were due to the Ship or the Captain. It was due to weather & an SOS.
