This was my second cruise with Holland America. They're great for a single, middle-aged traveler like me. Clientele is not too old or young. The ships are lovely and grown-up but not stodgy, food is fabulous, nightly shows fun and shore excursions usually terrific. I really needed to relax, though so my favorite is the spa. Staff and treatments are wonderful, but it was the relaxation room with the ceramic beds, hot tub, steam rooms and great view for whale watching that kept me coming back!

Typical Holland America - either you think that's a good thing or you don't. We do. Great service, staid but elegant surroundings, decent food that is always fine and sometimes very good. Good gym with fabulous view. Not for those who want to party the night away. No "wow" factor, but very comfortable and pleasant, particularly for those over 55 who don't care about waterslides, climbing walls, and such.

Aboard the ms Zaandam, the service was excellent and the staff extremely helpful. Our cabin was kept wonderful condition by our very attentive stewards. The wait staff in the Rotterdam Dining Room and the Pinnacle Grill were extremely attentive. The food was wonderful. We enjoyed the demonstrations and the cooking class in the Culinary Arts Center. The Navigation Team showed great skill in steering us safely through the Chilean Fjords and Antarctic Islands. The lectures on board were great! They were given by former members of the US Antarctic Program and a Naturalist familiar the flora and fauna of Chile, Argentina and Antarctica. We even had people come onboard from the US Antarctic Palmer Station to answer questions of what is it like to live and work there. All in all - a great experience!

When I got off the bus I informed the guides that I would stay at the bus if they thought I would be unable to make the trip. Jake Bartolz said he would get me there. We slowly walked to the canoe. Jake helped me got into the canoe. It was cold, windy and raining on the water, but Jake made the trip very informative. Jake took the time to answer all our questions. I decided to stay in the canoe, while the others walked to the glacier. Jake stayed with me. I really enjoyed visiting with him. Jake got us safely back to the bus. I enjoyed my shore excursion because of Jake. Jake Bartolz need to be hired again next year and he needs a raise!!!!

We enjoyed the Zaandam cruising and the expert care and service from their staff. It was exceptional all the way from the Captain who expertly got us great shots of whales and Glaciers to the stateroom staff (Yeah Booty!!) who made living on the ship a joy! Food was excellent and activities numerous. I even had time to teach my son Chess. While it was their newest and largest, it was more friendly and cozy I think for everyone there. Just enjoyed the heck out of the views and excursions we went on at the ports. Awesome, trip and great cruise line.

The stewards are amazing...always keeping our room clean and furnished yet practically invisible! The food was good, but the entertainment was terrific! Overall a reasonable cruise. Dining room service was hot and cold depending on the waiter. Twice had to leave without dessert as we had waited over 20 minutes from the end of the meal until someone was available to take our dessert order. House keeping was great, ship performers and singers were very good. Overall ship ambiance was moderate, as ventilation issues led to several days of foul smells on a couple of the decks and in our bathroom.

Ship staff was very responsive and cheerful. However, the entertainment was geared to a more mature audience and excluded young adults. Also, the demographics of The passengers was odd in that it was all white older folks! No younger folks or people of color. The land portion was fine except for tha Westmark Anchorage. It seemed run down and the rooms were small compared to the two previous hotels. The shore excursions were fine and had something for everyone.

All three generations--ages 80 to 7--liked the Zaandam. Although it is one of the smaller ships in the HAL fleet, it offered exactly what we needed---a program for the seven-year-olds complete with their own Park Ranger for Glacier Bay and a small, but compatible group of teens for the 14-year-old. Everyone in our group of nine enjoyed the Expedition Cafe, on-line access to the NY Times, and the demonstrations from American's Test Kitchen. The Vista Suites were more than comfortable. Staff through out the ship was friendly and competent.

The Zaandam is a decent sized ship--big enough to be stable in rough seas but small enough to not feel like we were flooding a port with people. We weren't thrilled with the shows, but we enjoyed our dinners with family and friends at the late seating instead. Spent time in the piano bar (Keith was great) and casino instead. Signature beverage package was worthwhile, so we didn't have to debate every drink purchase. Very few of the staff speak English as their first language--not a problem in the restaurant but more challenging with the cabin stewards. Overall, a relaxing journey.

Very nice itinerary but be aware that there can be 1-2 hours from the port to destination. Specifically, San Antonio to Santiago Chile. This was not the only port this happened. The ship needs a makeover and is supposedly going for this April 2018. There was a repeat of cooking shows, entertainment and movies. Little to do other than gamble, bingo, shop in The Shops and drink. There were no structured bridge games, internet classes overflowing and the coffee was less than perfect. The cuisine was average.

What is there not to like about a ship of this size or her crew?
Reviewed on: 15 Jan 2018
Zaandam, my second cruise aboard her, did not disappoint in any physical way. In rough seas, of which we had plenty, she handled them well. She is a good sea boat. HAL crew continue to be a major standout and a reason why this cruiser returns to HAL. Service and willingness to accommodate one's wishes by the crew are most appreciated. This was my 3rd Christmas Cruise about a HAL vessel. It was interesting to see how different ships decorate and how they handle to holiday. One negative: given that this cruise encompassed a major Christian and Jewish holiday, the lack of a Protestant Minister or a Rabbi to offer services aboard the ship was very disappointing to those of us who are Christian or Jewish. Why should there be only a Catholic Priest aboard and not those to provide for other faiths?

This was a bucket list around the Horn itinerary. Embarkation was smoothly handled. Stateroom had some disappointments: very small TV; pushed-together-twins-to-make-a-queen bed had a noticeable valley in the middle; bathroom had an unpleasant odor--despite our steward's efforts to disinfect; security safe was locked by use of a stateroom key not combination. If one person locked it, the other could not open it which seemed dumb. Closet and drawer storage was better than average. Overall condition of the ship interior was all right. The center atrium is a little dated and makes it difficult to get from various public areas on Deck 4 without going up to Deck 5 to transit fore and aft. When we had thee consecutive, inclement weather sea days there was a lack of comfortable seating in public areas. Service was lacking due to understaffing. HAL has cut too many corners to save costs. It's priced like a "Buick" and delivers a "Chevy" experience. Never again.

Zaandam 14 day Alaskan Cruise
Reviewed on: 09 Jul 2018
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our cruise. There was a large listing of activities to participate in each day without an extra charge. We appreciated that. Our stateroom was well designed with plenty of storage. We had plumbing issues in our stateroom 1869, however. The bathroom floor flooded twice. Our room steward took care of moping up the water the 1st time. The second time, I reported the flooding to the front desk because of the odor and black sediment which came up through the floor drain. There was a response immediately and the bathroom was sanitized. When we left the ship in Seattle, the toilet did not flush. I left a note in the stateroom when we got off the ship. We are missing a rolling garment bag with all of our dressy clothes and several souvenirs from Alaska. A form was submitted but I have not had a response from Holland America after several phone calls and information mailed on Tuesday, July 3. What recourse do I have if it is not returned?

This captain was all right and, as mentioned his ship is well kept, but it would be nice if we saw him around more often. Our only other negative was it sounded like carts rolling over our heads all night and woke us several times a night. We were in a Neptune suite and feel that the noise should not have been disturbing us all night.

My cruise started in San Diego, Cal and ended in Rio. Most lectures were excellent, with professionals as speakers. The staff was well-trained in customer relations - greeting were tendered by staff members, from officers down to below deck workers whenever we met, be it in the restaurants, bar or even hallways. What I really missed was an organized duplicate bridge event. In prior cruises the director gave lessons in the morning and afternoon before the actual game started. Since this particular cruise had quite a few sea days, it would have enhanced the time. Can it really cost so much to give a cabin and food to a Director and his partner?? I'm sure the recompense would not break the bank either.

This was an enjoyable cruise. It reminded me of an Alaskan cruise I did years ago, e.g. stopping in small towns, lots of beautiful glaciers and iceburgs to see. The was always lots to do on the ship. This cruise had 6 days of sea time, so it was good to keep busy. There were a few surprises on board such as cooking lessons from America's best kitchens, and a digital lab provided by microsoft. I particularly liked the latter because of the hands on lessons on managing and improving photos. The onboard entertainment was very good, with music to suit almost any taste - latin jazz, clasical, sing along piano, popular/classical piano. The evening stage shows were very good - with excellent dancers and good singers. The comedian and juggler were interesting shows, as were the pan flute musicians. I found the BBC nature film orchestrated by the ship's orchestra was unique and excellent. The food in the main dining room was excellent, as was the service. The drink prices were very high.
