Excellent cruise line-Veedamm
Reviewed on: 17 Sep 2013
I recommend Holland America for it's good service, nice amenities, good crew, and pleasant atmosphere. Food choices were good and for the most part they were very good. A few problems with keeping reservations to the proper time and a few rude crew members but generally speaking I would travel with them again. I was on the Veendam.

The cruise was wonderful. The seas were a bit rough but you have no control over that. The whole crew was wonderful. The entertainment was great. We had a problem with our heating and cooling. It just did not work. The TV was another problem. The contrast was very bad. It looked like everything was in a twilight zone. As we expected, the internet was very very slow. Other than that, the cruise was GREAT!

Services have been cut back
Reviewed on: 31 Aug 2014
Loved the New England/Canada itinerary (which we did last year in reverse order) but were disappointed in the clear cutbacks to services. Dining room service was terrible and food poorly cooked - both in the main dining room and the Pinnacle Grill. Never have we opted for the Lido deck for dinner before, but this time did so and the food was much better prepared. However, the hours were severely truncated which made finding a comfortable time to dine with a good selection of food difficult. Our cabin staff and the personnel at the Ocean Bar were wonderful. We did not return to the MIX bar because the lead bartender was surly, officious and unpleasant. We also found the entertainment lacking in quality except for the female who let the trio in the Ocean Bar and the Violinist. The Shows were not something that enticed us, so we did not attend.

I have sailed with HAL to Alaska in the past and thought it to be a superior cruise line - lovely room, services, excursions - really, everything you would wish for in a cruise line. I was thoroughly looking forward to this cruise as well - in fact, we were on board for two days (not having left port) - but settled into our lovely lanai room when the captain cancelled the cruise. They were having propulsion problems they could not repair. I question how the boat was in port for 3 days but we didn't hear of delays or problems until the hour before we were to cruise. It made it very difficult to make alternative arrangements - flight changes, etc. - it was now Sunday and almost midnight. I incurred a airline ticket charge that was 3 times what I had originally booked in addition to other inconveniences. I am holding off on my opinion of HAL until I hear how they handle my very large claim (had booked pre and pos cruise activities) as yet, I have heard nothing from the company.

We have been on the Veendam before and were looking forward to it again. We were not disappointed. We had a lanai stateroom which is a great idea if you are traveling in warm weather. We spent a great deal of time in our reserved deck chairs and got to know our "neighbours". As we discovered before, the food was great. Our favourite dining venue is the Canaletto which we visited three times this trip. The staff is always friendly and capable but this time they were tested when the ship arrived late and many passengers (including us) had to change flights. The front desk staff and many others kept their good humour and worked tremendously hard to make sure everyone was looked after. Great trip! Great ship! Great cruise line!

As usual, I enjoy cruising and this trip, once again, confirmed that feeling. The views at the ports of call were outstanding. The service ant eh entertainment were really good. The food is not what it used to be in past years but it did not bothered me. Who needs excess anyway while the quality is very good. There was a problem with the tender service in Bar Harbor (Maine); two out of the four tenders were broken and it took a chunk of the morning to fix them. I could not go to the city as early as I wanted to but I understand that accidents happen unexpectedly.Although it bothered me a little at the time, it was not a big deal. We stayed on the boat and we got to see a family of dolphins very close to us. Finally the tenders were fixed and back on service. The captain was embarrassed about the unfortunate event and he apologized several times. We got a free glass of champagne that night as a token of their good will. Overall, I will certainly do this cruise again

Panama Canal Holiday Cruise

Overall we were very happy with this cruise. There were a few things however that were disappointing. There was a premium paid for the cruise which led us to believe there would be events, decorations, etc. that would be different for the holidays. The decorations were there but they were not very spectacular. There were no special events that were noted as being "special" for the holiday. The ship is showing its age, small things like wall covering needing to be reattached, add up to an impression of neglect. Service was EXCELLENT! Embarkation and debarkation were extremely well handled and timely.
Needs numerous cosmetic repairs.

The people on that worked on the Veedam were wonderful but the ship is small and aged compared to other cruise ships and the workers are lacking a lot of things that new ships have, One example is that the hot food on the buffet was not hot because they have no hot plates or heat lights on the buffet. We also experienced rocking motion several nights, something that we did not have on other cruise lines. Coming out of one port we lost our power and had to have generators turned on so we were two hours late getting into the next port.

Shortage of trained crew on board There was not enough crew on board to meet the needs of the passengers, Management on board was ill trained to deal with issues and thats if you could even get a response from someone at all. Not answering phone at front desk for hours. Doing away with the fun and easy games that anyone can play and leaving the passengers with only basketball or pickleball which the majority can't play at all. I would recommend the Veendam to other travelers only if it is the only ship going to where you want to go for a price you want to pay. The reason is that the Veendam itself is essentially showing many signs of wear and could use a major renovation and updating. Our stateroom was on the bottom passenger deck and the endless motor noise and vibration at night was an annoyance. (Ours rooms were located where they were in order to be close to another couple we were traveling with.) On the plus side, we liked the size of the ship. The on-ship activities and lectures suited us because of our age (mid-70's) and interests. We liked the Test Kitchen demonstrations and academic lectures; we would not have used water-slides and such had they been available. As with all Holland America ships, the stateroom help was excellent.
