While we had a great time on our cruise, we had a problem with a tour. While we paid for a transfer we were not provided one. Even though our ticket said "transfer included" we were told while in line for the tour that the transfer was only for Holland America hotels. We asked for a refund for the transfer and the Holland America employee said we would receive one in 2-3 days, we not only did not receive our refund, they are now denying that we even paid for one. Bad customer service, HAL! I would never recommend your lines just for that one issue. If you're not going to stand behind what you sell, I cannot recommend you.

Although scheduling the land portion of the trip first is a little more hectic, it allows one to wind down before returning home. It also makes for a shorter flight home. All of the excursions were interesting but the Jet Boat Safari in Denali, the helicopter glacier landing in Juneau and snorkeling in Ketchikan were especially memorable. Sea kayaking and the Portage Glacier cruise were cancelled due to high winds rain and cold weather. The Haines Adventure hike was not very interesting since the guide was not very well informed. Haines, in general, was not an interesting stop. If I ever return to Alaska I probably will not cruise again since I did not find much that interested me on the ship between ports. The fourteen hour layover in Vancouver was a bit long, an earlier flight would have been better. On the whole, the trip was enjoyable, but I was surprised how expensive meals were off the ship.

The Oosterdam was all we could have hoped for. The staff and crew were top-notch in all respects. Accommodations were fine, and the food was excellent. We particularly enjoyed some of the music offerings - especially Adagio in the Explorer Lounge, and Jimmy Maddox in the Piano Lounge. All the crew were very attentive to our four grandchildren, ages 8 to 12, and did a lot to jolly them along and keep them entertained. It pleased them enormously, and gratified us. The Neptune Lounge concierge staff, Stephanie and Roxy, were particularly friendly and helpful - including helping to find a lost pair of gloves! Our cabin stewards, Rizal and Noyon, provided first-class service. The dining stewards were superb, and Olga, the wine steward, gave very attentive and gracious service.

We have not been on an HAL ship newer than the Amsterdam so this was our first experience with a Vista class ship. There were problems with the cabin that were built into the design. No ventilation in the bathroom, there was far less storage space, particularly drawers and the space between the foot of the bed and the wall was too narrow. My wife's wheelchair is smaller than a standard wheelchair and it was only with "careful driving" that it could be guided through that space without scraping the wall or pulling the bedding off. The scrapes on the wall showed what others had done!

It was very nicely decorated, but the cabin was smaller than the cabin on the Noordam at the same price and same itinerary, that I took last February. The food in the Pinnacle Grill was excellent as usual. the food in the Vista Dining room was trying to be elegant, but not making it every day. The itinerary is an excellent cross section of the islands and we enjoyed walking around each town. The staff was excellent as usual. I would recommend this cruise to anyone .

On this trip I became a 3 star which I was excited about but after this trip, not so sure I will hit 4.Maybe I will make 100 sail days. There were differences from my past sailings & not so much for the better. Maybe just this ship so I will not count Holland out completely, but I do have my travel agent searching for a smaller line or at list one that does not put a price on everything you do. It was noticeable there was a staff cut back in the food / beverage side for sure & some in the hotel side. I did not feel the cabin was taken care of as much as in the past & in the dining areas we had to search out the servers for assistance, especially the beverage service personnel. I was very, very disappointed with both of the afternoon teas we attended, Indonesion & Dutch High. There was so much confusion & poor service that we chose not to attend anymore. It was like this was the first time anyone ever did this & the food was not very good. Hoping for better next time with Koningsdam.

Oosterdam had PROBLEMS! May be fixed???
Reviewed on: 12 Apr 2017
The people are great. The ship is fine. The plumbing on deck 4 had a BAD problem which did not get fixed - apparently about 40 cabins were affected. Erratic hot water - usually luke warm to cold. Toilet flushing problems. We were given $1000 credit (cash not voucher), a bottle of wine, 2 dinners for 2 at the Pinnacle, chocolates and numerous apologies. In addition we were moved to a very nice suite (6117) for the last 5 days. However we would have preferred our original cabin 4178 to have been usable. Otherwise the Oosterdam is a typical HAL ship. We missed one port - the captain said that our berth was given to another ship - he was mad - Costa Maya. Apparently we had a reservation at a specific dock but another ship got there first and the port authorities gave the space to them - probably a bigger ship?? Overall we think we were treated fairly and we will continue with HAL. We recommend Oosterdam provided you check that the plumbing problem has been fix

We enjoyed our 23 days aboard the Oosterdam! I appreciated the size of the ship -- less than 1900 passengers and it wasn't so large that I felt lost. If and when I cruise again, I will choose this or another Holland America ship similar to this one. I can't say enough about the staff on the ship -- from our cabin to the dining room to the spa to any staff we encountered in the hallways -- everyone was extremely polite and friendly. All made us feel happy to be there. We absolutely loved -- and enjoyed -- our wait staff in the Vista dining room -- Gusti, the host; Neal, our wine assistant; and especially our two waiters, Barnabas Sinda and Fahrudy Lukman Arif. What a team! I celebrated my 77th birthday on the ship. Barnabas and Rudy learned of it and made it so very special for me. I couldn't be with my family but these two young men gave me wonderful memories to bring home! I will always remember that night!

The amenities were overwhelming and Marge and Riz were so extremely helpful and nice in the Neptune Lounge-any question or request you had, they took care of with grace. Arlin in the Pinnacle Grill was a delight to talk to and get to know. She truly loves what she's doing and we wanted to take her home with us! All the staff in the Pinnacle were fun, nice and made meals extra special. After 13 cruises, we actually made a deposit on another cruise next year. We booked the Neptune Suite to be able to enjoy all the extras!! This experience truly made the trip more memorable and easier. Former cruises have rarely been this relaxing. The MS Oosterdam seemed a lot like the MS Noordam, which we sailed on last year, but I understand they are of different classes. None the less, the on board crew did a fabulous job, as we have come to expect from HAL. I was told the ship had recently had some updates, but there were some minor rough spots here and there around the ship. Nothing to distract or be a nuisance though.

Very good. Enjoyed the new decor, great laundry service, the Lincoln Center Stage and Billboard entertainment venues, and as always on HAL, the service was excellent in the cabine as well as the dining room.

The services were fabulous. There is no reason to be board on this ship, for there is something to do every hour of the day or night. Fine dining is the best for food selections and there is package price levels for this choice. Food in the main part of the ship is so so. Breakfast was great, lunch was ok, but dinner was where it was so so. Chicken not tender and steak and fish over done. However, other choices were fine.

The Singers and dancers were first class!! As good, if not better, than you would see in a professional venue!! One night was very rocky and the dancers did a great job with the 'Musicology' program. It was fabulous!! The Billboard piano players were out of this world. Will (from Pigeon Forge, TN) was sick the last few nights of our cruise and he was missed. However, the other piano player (from Pennsylvania) was wonderful and very, very talented. It was hard for him to be the only one playing and singing but her did a great job!! We found ourselves going to more than 1 of their shows per night just for the fun and to watch and listen to the amazing talent!! Thanks to those 2 guys for making our cruise memorable over a holiday!

I only recommend this trip to someone over 90 and needs a walker. That sounds snotty but truly, there was very little to do, they charged for everything and the food was sub -par, except in the special dining areas, which charged extra, of course. The crew was very nice, helpful and pleasant. But the 957 gospel singers, the Amish family reunion and the retired biker club took over the ship. The weather was great though.
