Four of us had two Neptune suites on the Rotterdam sailing from Rotterdam July 27 to the Norwegian fjords. Our accommodations were excellent, the Neptune lounge was very comfortable, the staff very helpful, and the scenery was great. The food was very bland, however. A few spices would go a long way to improve the taste of the food. My cousin suffered a fractured left shoulder while trying to recover from a fall. The staff and especially the doctor, Dr. Gibson, were extremely helpful.

Rotterdam is showing age in some spots, particularly baths and restrooms. Room, Neptune Suite was terrific. It should have a larger TV and certainly more channels. Only available were some movies, Fox News, BBC and MSNBC. No sports network. Pinnacle lounge was great as well. Dining room, Pinnacle Grille were excellent. Lido does not have as good a variety as some ships. Somewhat disappointing. Entertainment was very good, high quality and great shows. Cruise director chose to be invisible, didn't introduce herself until third day. Last but certainly not least, GREAT ITINERARY !

The cruising was great. The service on the ship was excellent. The fact that the Lido buffet was only open at certain times was not fitting our schedule. The timing of activities was poor, and they changed the times for the main shows, which made it impossible to spend any time in the evening seeing the BB King group. Other scheduling during the day was poor also.

We have cruised a least a dozen times on Holland America ships and we always have a wonderful time especially with the staff. We always request the late seating at 8:00 p.m. can have a relaxing dinner without rushing off to get a decent seat for the 10:00 p.m. show. This has always worked for us. This time, a week or two into the cruise, apparently the cruise director (Michael) decided to change the times to an 7:45 dinner and 9:30 show. This put is in a rush, rush situation and could not always enjoy dinner because we had in some cases had to hurry if we decided to go to the show. The other thing that we were disappointed on was that there was a happy hour before the early seating but Holland America choose not to include any happy hour before the late seating, unless we wanted to go at 4:00 p.m. That too was disappointing. Almost always, the expensive internet is a problem and the heating/cooling system throughout the ship needs some work. But it was still a great cruise.

Holland America Has the Most Dedicated Staff

By: RichHAL

Reviewed on: 30 Aug 2016

We have cruised with Holland America for many years. We have noticed that they are cutting corners and making their staff cover more passengers. This is normal for most businesses nowadays. It is not pleasant for us because we know how Outstanding Holland America used to be. Today the overall service is Excellent but not at the levels it once was. We feel that Holland America has reduced the amount of staff per guest. They have also cut out some of the "niceties" that they used to offer. However, what has NOT changed is the dedication of the ship's staff and crew. They are still tireless workers offering the best and most personable service that one could ever expect. They will do just about anything to make us passengers feel comfortable. We hope that Holland America will bring back the Outstanding Service that made them the best Cruise line for us and our preferred choice.

Ship not as good as some others

By: CaroleB

Reviewed on: 17 Dec 2016

We had a number of problems with our cabin. The prime issue was the water system which was not fixed until day 40 or our 42 day cruise. We had to run the cold water (which came out literally steaming hot) from the cold water faucet for approx. 10 minutes before washing or showering. First incidence of this was about a week into our cruise and was reported by us 3 times, once to the cabin stewards and twice to the front desk. After scalding myself in the shower the first time this happened, I learned quickly to just run the cold tap until it was reasonable to use. So much for HAL's water conservation notes. I do not anticipate sailing on the Rotterdam anytime in the near future. (Oh, and I am a 5 star mariner so am not "new" to cruising)!

Still Hanging In There

The Rotterdam is beginning to show her age. I noticed a few problems, such as I had a great deal of difficulty getting my room cool enough. It took maintenance several visits to make the room barely acceptable. Paint chips are everywhere. I pointed out a missing door handle in a handicapped bathroom (it was promptly repaired when I showed it to the hotel manager). There was a problem of some kind on Deck Three that needed to have the carpet pulled up and whatever there was beneath it fixed. The library badly needs an update and another thousand books wouldn't hurt. Still, the old girl still purrs as she travels from place to place. All she really needs is a rejuvenating trip to a spa--or drydock.

The deck floor had been replaced beautifully, but was covered with an inch of dust. The deck furniture was nice, but when we arrived, very dusty. The counter in our cabin was chipped and the dressing table and drawers badly out of date. The couch was new and beautiful. The bed was very comfortable. The public areas of the ship were in very good condition. The food was excellent in the Lido and in the dining room. Service was excellent!

Clean ship, lots of stops, wonderful friendly crew, the good points. The main dinning, the food was adequate one night and piss poor the next. Service was good even with a short crew of dinning room staff. The chef was into presentation of the food, but not taste. Pinnacle Grill was very good, service was good, very friendly staff. Lido deck was ok. The "Drive In" was good if you could get them to make you a hamburger, 25 min wait for a plain hotdog, with no line. Room steward was one of the best we have ever had, he went out of his way to make us feel at home. The "Showroom at Sea" was crowded for the first and empty for the second show. The music was too loud, took my hearing out, still too loud. Could hear and understand the music from the Ocean Bar. People would get up and leave during the show. Lots and lots of stops, very good ports with a lot to do. Most ports people were friendly and helpful.

Our time aboard the Rotterdam was mostly pleasant, but had some issues with Lanai Cabin chairs not being numbered, consequently were mistaken for other passengers' chairs. The wait and front desk staffs, crew and bar service were phenomenal. CA3333, which was supposed to be an accessible room, was tiny, with barely room for my walker, and a terrible tripping hazard for my husband until we asked the beds to be re-configured. I caught a cold on our 7th day out, so missed a lot of things to which I was really looking forward. The Rotterdam needs some facelifting in several areas. Accessible doorways in all venues would be a good start and getting rid of smoking in the casino would be another great approach!

An Old Ship serving an old crowd

We knew that a 38-day voyage would attract mostly wealthy and retired. But were surprised when when 900 of the 1400 guests were four and five-star Mariners ...meaning very faithful Holland America Cruisers. Many had gone on this trip several times before and the average age was somewhere well over 75. Surprisingly there were not that many onboard activities established for such a prestigious clientele. everyone ate early and went to bed early, the ship even moved the Late Show to 9:30 because people thought 10 o'clock was too late. the ship also looked old and felt old leaky roofs in the dining area and dirty windows. Again surprising due to the clientele that they were serving. We do not feel that we got sufficient value for what this trip cost.

itinerary wonderful/Rotterdam disappointing

By: Jordan

Unfortunately, the Rotterdam was disappointing. The food quality and presentation was poor. Any time dining really doesn't work if you show up between 1st and 2nd sitting. Showroom is inadequate for those who wish to attend at 8:00 pm, since most of the seats are taken or reserved (against ship's requests) by 7:15 pm. Nickel and diming is prevalent, although some freebies if you're 5 star. There is "sell, sell, sell" attitude with unnecessary announcements during the day of events already published in the daily program. Charging passengers $20.00 per person for a 2 mile shuttle bus ride in Dublin (and crew $7.00) is inexcusable. Charging for Wi-Fi: Sad scene in most ports seeing passengers and crew running off the ship to find wi-fi hot spots, and then gathered together in small area clutching their hand held electronics. Overall condition of the interior and exterior (lots of rust) of the ship is poor, probably needs weeks of dry dock. Positives: Itinerary & great crew attitude.

The ship is in very good condition and our suite had new furniture, soft furnishings, and new chairs and table on the large veranda. We enjoyed the ports, especially Guatemala and Roatan, which are both ports that are less visited by cruise ships. The entertainment was very good and the HAL staff were, as usual, great. Rotterdam offers a "traditional" cruise. It is refined and relaxing. I would not recommend it for children or young couples, but for anyone who likes good food, good service, and an uncrowded feeling while on a cruise, I would highly recommend the Rotterdam. The Neptune Suites are great as the are about 600 square feet, have the use of the Neptune Lounge and its amenities

They did a dry dock last year but mostly cosmetic and not the working condition of the ship. I have seen some changes in cruising, some cutbacks were surprising. This ship is great for older cruisers. The staff was great, very hardworking. Entertainment was good, enjoyed the variety. Took long to get a handle on the norovirius. We liked our lanai room. Food was excellent, nice to have room service on port days. Shore excursions were handled well. Guest Services were pleasant and helpful. Disappointed in internet service and the shops.

If you are looking for zip-lines and surfing pools, look elsewhere. If you value an excellent crew, great food and entertainment this is a great ship. It's a 'right size' ship, large enough to be comfortable with lots of public space and small enough to be intimate. You get to know the staff and they get to know you. This is important to us. Our waiters know us and our preferences and go way beyond the norm in making sure that things are the way you like them. Your room steward will get to know your habits and are eager to make sure your needs are met in every way. HAL uses this ship on some extremely attractive itineraries. Our trip was 52 days on this cruise and we had a wonderful time.

We boarded the ship in Boston and there were enough porters to carry our bags to the cabin. Going thru the lines took only 30 minutes and we headed to the Lido deck for a nice brunch. After walking around the ship, it was time to unpack and then go to the muster drill. The ship was very clean and the mattress was firm and water pressure was excellent. There was a tub and shower, and a small sofa. The TV screen was small and channels were limited, but there was a DVD player. The tender service in Bar Harbor was well-organized and fast. During the evenings there were 2 shows with singers and dancers and a 4-piece band. There were also 2 comedians and daily movies which were average. Buffett breakfasts were very good with many choices and high- quality food. We usually ate a light lunch in the ports and you could sign up for tours online or after landing depending on the weather. It was cool and partly cloudy for 5 out of 7 days, so it may be better to go in Sept.

Rotterdam cruise October 2018

Crow's Nest was closed for a Private Party during the sailaway narration on the St. Lawrence given by an Exc member on 1 side AFTER everyone had taken a seat during Happy Hour. There was no where for that side to go, so everyone had to leave. It was also completely closed for H H one day and everyone was instructed to go to the Ocean Bar for Happy Hour. The fish, including the shrimp, at dinner , other than the salmon, was poor quality and/or not cooked to the standards we have come to expect from HAL. Having different fish at dinner is a big deal for me so I was disappointed for 14 days. The Shrimp a la Diabla is supposed to have a sauce; this had cayenne pepper dusted on it; and it was horrible. One night the sole was coated with egg & a sweet pancake batter. Terrible. It never got better. 2 Mariner's Luncheons were held & the "choices" were Venison Stew or Cod. The fish at our luncheon was inedible & we heard the same from others in the second group. Insulting.

Needs serious refitting

By: sadbramer

Reviewed on: 02 Apr 2019

While the crew and staff were excellent, the ship itself needs serious work. We were in a fully accessible Lanai Room in which the Lanai Doors didn't lock, nor close, nor open effectively. It was a known issue when we boarded the ship because there was, already in our stateroom, an in-house made block of wood to put inside the sill of the Lanai Door in order to keep it closed and that others from the outside could not gain entrance. We were recompensed, but the fact is that the rooms should not be sold as Lanai Rooms until they are fixed. There were many other issues that didn't impact us directly, but that we heard from other passengers, as to no hot water, no cold water, flooding in a room, etc. Those things being said, we are still in love with HAL and have booked another cruise for next year on the same ship. We have been assured that by the time we sail, she will have been into dry-dock and all problems addressed.

Translant to Rotterdam

We recently crossed the Atlantic on the Rotterdam's 15-day spring repositioning cruise. This was our third trip on the same ship; we've had the same stateroom each time....second deck amidship so there's minimal motion! The crew is gracious, the ship in flawless condition, and we prefer the "medium size" label with 1,200 max. passengers. We enjoyed the sea days and activities including daily crew lectures about the ship, computer lessons, bridge lessons and open play, superb fitness center and sessions, general lectures, and live entertainment. There were also frequent themed and gala dinners. The Rotterdam is a H-A "R" Class that is among its smaller ships, and considered the fastest class in the industry. The small size also enables the ship to visit ports that are not on the common cruise boat circuit. In fact, most of the passengers were staying on for another two-week tour around the Baltic Sea. We hated to leave!!

Love the Rotterdam! A small ship with the best crew ever! We really enjoyed Barry from Boston in the Mix and dancing to the hits in the Crows Nest, as well as the Ocean Quartett! It is so very sad that HAL will be doing with all of this soon! Entertainment on the Main Stage was very mixed and it is sad to see that HAL did away with the cast for the Main Stage and only brings in outside entertainers. Food was very good, but like always on the Lido not hot enough; the menu in the Canaletto changed for the much better and the Pinaccle is consistenly good. Other than not having any outlets by the bed, the rom was very nice with Dedi and Darry taking great care of us. We will keep looking for the smaller ships in the HAL fleet; everything is so much more personable.

Great Small Ship

The Rotterdam is a quintessential small ship, but it makes you feels like you never want to leave it...ever! The people that care for you as you sail are totally awesome individuals from all over the world who share their heritage and experiences with you as they pamper you. The food is amazing and there are many specialty restaurants and different menus to chose from. There are more ports available to these smaller ships and so you end up seeing more of the culture of the countries that you visit right from the ship instead of having to ride on busses to see sights out of a window. We LOVE Holland America and will Cruise with them for many years to come.
