Recommend Holland America
Reviewed on: 22 Nov 2013
My husband and I have traveled on Holland America for almost 200 days. We have always found this line wonderful. We stay in the same room or near the same room every trip - on the 7000 level. The lounge is a great place and we enjoy having the concierge there to help with all our requests. Holland America has been our first choice for many years and will continue to be so.

We had a wonderful vacation on holland America. We are 4star mariners and enjoy the extras that go along with that. The staff in all areas were wonderful and helpful . The ship was clean and well kept. The captain was great and held the ship for 3hrs waiting for the passengers on all the flights that were late because of the weather. we enjoyed all the island tours booked through the ship. Since we had a late flight we booked the tour to spend time at the cruise reception Center in Hollywood Florida until it was time to go to the airport. They took very good care of us and it was so much better than sitting at the airport . Cathy booked our flight through holland America and they certainly took good care of us . They reassured us when our flight was so delayed that they would take care of us if we were late getting there.

Love the service. Hate the decor
Reviewed on: 24 Feb 2014
I have cruised 5 times, three of them with HAL. I like the cruise line, the service, the food. But I hate the decor on most cruise ships. Why do they all have to look like they came out of 50s Las Vegas. How about injecting some sleek, contemporary design to the furniture, art on the walls and and other fixtures. Hotels have modern face-lifts why not the ships? There is also too much emphasis on shopping, spas and casinos. How about some interesting lecture series. In case you think I'm in my 30's, NO, I'm a modern 65 year old with some taste, part of your target demographic. Today's boomers don't want to live in Ozzie and Harriet style interiors.

We really enjoyed our cruise. The excursions we booked through HAL were very good. On St. Lucia we went on the 7 hour tour of the Island leaving from Castries and ending at Soufriere (where our ship was docked). On Barbados we went to Harrison's Cave. Very interesting and well worth it. On St. Thomas we went on a snorkeling tour with the Castaway Girls to Turtle Cove and Shipwreck Bay. The crew on the catamaran were excellent and fun. On the way back to the dock they plied us with rum punch! The Noordam is a lovely ship but getting a little "tired"...maybe time for a refit. As always, the Philippino staff were excellent...especially our cabin attendants, Usep and Andry; Willis, Lee, Chris and Rolando. Re: the use of the lounge chairs around the covered pool area. Many times people left their belongings on the chairs to go somewhere and did not return for up to several hours. That behavior is unfair to other guests. Not sure what HAL can do to alleviate this problem.

Our trip was a bucket lister for us as we had long hoped to do an Alaskan cruise. We were looking for something nice, but not too pricey. HAL certainly fit the bill. The food was good and at times very good. The staff was delightfully courteous and well spoken. The spa was excellent. The only downside was the "shopping channel on the high seas" feel that we would get from time to time.

We were disappointed but did enjoy the Vista Dining and open seating. We were impressed with the boarding and departing at the ports and the beginning and ending of the trip. I had to go to medical in the middle of the night and was impressed with the doctor and nurse attending. Overall, it was a great experience and I would highly recommend Holland America.

We had an adventurous trip to Australia/ New Zealand. Ship decor is older. Food was plentiful- lots of options for dinner entrees. The Asian station for lunches, the made-to order pastas (yes, even gluten free), salads, were a nice change from the traditional Lido line foods. Other food options were the Pinnacle and Italian restaurants with excellent quality entrees and service. The Ship captain was excellent, good explanations and tackled some challenging locations skillfully. He really emphasized keeping the ship germ free! All staff were VERY upbeat and friendly, always greeted you, were prompt and gracious. Entertainment was fun with piano bar hits from 50's, 60's through current-engaging. BB King jazz and live band were tops for another option almost every evening. The main shows varied (as usual), mostly very good with a few solo performers that were not very good. The exercise room was bad-equipment was outdated, some not working. Classes packed. Off hours were better.

We have sailed with HA well over 100 days and this was the most disappointing trip. The crew was great but the ship seemed understaffed, with service very slow and at times, non-existent (e.g. waiting 30 minutes at the Ocean Bar for a drink that finally arrived as we had to leave for dinner). This situation was commented in by many other seasoned travelers with HA. There is now a very limited room service menu and service was very slow. The dance floor for evening ballroom dancing is gone as is the band for this purpose. The Ocean Bar allegedly had a small area for dancing but it was really a passageway and did not work well at all, although we tried. The Crows Nest is a great lounge but dancing was never offered there. Would I go on a HA cruise in the future? Not unless I was assured that the above issues were addressed and only after carefully considering other cruise line options. Unfortuaely, HA has lost the HA first loyalty of a third generation HA family.

Was pleased with our accommodations, the staff was very friendly and helpful when necessary, and the food was outstanding. That said, contracted the Norovirus while at sea, causing a quarantine to our quarters, missing of a port, and the planned adventure at that port. This was the third Holland ship to have the virus to or from Alaska to Vancouver or Seattle in recent weeks and over 5.0 percent of the cruisers on our boat were ill. Did not think that Holland America reacted well to a known virus that was affecting their boats. Wrote to Holland America and received a sorry you were ill letter (email) and a hope that we cruise with them again. Was not looking for a free cruise and did not ask for anything; however, the offer of cruise credit or something if we chose Holland again would have been a nice gestor since a port, port adventure (not with Holland), and two days at sea were missed.

The food is above average, at times way above. We appreciate that the buffet is served by the crew, nobody has touched your food before you get it. The ship is comfortable, handles high seas well, and only holds 2000 passengers. The crew is about 900, so it’s nearly one crew member for every couple. Recommended

The check-in was quick and streamlined, much better than previous cruises. Our stateroom was large, spacious with all amenities we needed. Staff were friendly and very helpful and the food was great with plenty of variety. We did catch colds and blame the air conditioning unit above the bed. Perhaps the bed should be re-located. The entertainment was very good, with an abundance of bars available. On a negative note, the tipping for the most part was not discretionary but pre-added to each order. General amenities were not on par with previous cruises ie: general gym availability without membership, no movie theater, and excursion prices were expensive.

My recommendation would depend on what the passenger is looking for. The ship itself is very tired and in need of major upgrade. The Asian staff were fantastic. The food plentiful though mainly unexciting. My favourite Brown Brothers wine was on the wine list which is unusual for a cruise. My biggest problem was there was very little to do on board ship on sea days. If you like playing trivia, sitting by the pool or playing cards, you'd be fine, but otherwise it was a pretty boring cruise. The nightly shows were good, and our Neptune Suite was comfortable and very clean. Having use of the Neptune Lounge was a plus, though we didn't pay full price for our suite and wouldn't want to (we were offered an upgrade from a Signature Suite for a small increase in fare). Limited number of kids on the cruise was a plus and they were well behaved. There isn't an adult only pool. We dined with different and interesting people each night.

We found the ship itself to be shabby and the on-board activities much lower quality than HAL cruises of past years. And there is a lot of nickel and diming...surcharges for SO many things. The room service menu is meager, the shows are amateurish, and the shops are uninspired. But wow, the cabin stewards are first-rate, as was the jazz piano player Justin. (The other jazz pianist played worse than I do.) We di enjoy the string quartet from Lincoln Center, but they were in a tiny performance space that left many people standing at the back door listening. Meanwhile, the dull Vista Lounge performances had sparse attendance. I may have outgrown this sort of cruising. The benefit of not having to unpack in each city no longer outweighs the high cost for a lower quality cruise experience than in former years.

As for the big shows, I found the magician amazing. the comedian less so. The production numbers were choreographed well, but seemed a mishmash. We also couldn't understand many of the vocals. Two downsides, 1) the announcements over the speaker system were often not understood by me and my guests, and the tour guide just spoke too fast. 2) And there seems to be less frills than the first time we sailed on the Noordam... no writing paper and envelopes, nor free wi-fi in our Neptune Stateroom.

32-day South Pacific Cruise to Australia/New Zealand
Reviewed on: 14 Nov 2018
It was not as good as all our other Holland America tours. Despite an reported average age of 72, HAL seems to be targeting a younger crowd. (There were two children and parents out of 950 passengers.) Not many working-age people can afford a 30+ day cruise, yet the Lido music was 'contemporary, consisting of the same vocalist at lunch and diner, literally screeching the same songs for 32 days straight. The Cruise Director advised me that HAL cruises will never again be like what we have loved about our HAL cruises. Another example: Park West Art was replaced by 'Contemporary art.' For the first time ever, I bought no art. Lido deck food was monotonous: Lamb for lunch and dinner for three days in a row, followed by a day of prime rib, and a day of pork belly. Five or six types of potato were offered for lunch and dinner and occasionally carrots or one heavily spiced green vegetable. My husband mostly ate meat alone. Not a single tropical island snorkel or dive tour.

Pros: the Noordam was the cleanest ship we have ever sailed on. The entire ships staff n crew were the friendliest that we have encountered ever. Food quality and managed portion sizes in main dining room ranked the best we have experienced. Actually the food at the Lido buffet was pretty tasty as well. Really enjoyed the Dive In where you could get fries, fresh grilled burgers and hot dogs. Service was quick and food was very good. America’s Test Kitchen and BB Kings were unique and fun. BB King’s band and lead vocalists were outstanding. Cons: overall the ship seemed understaffed. Dining room and room attendants seemingly had more tables and more rooms to manage than any other ship I’ve ever sailed on so service was slow! Entertainment in Vista Lounge was marginal, ships own singers and dancers were just not good. HAL sold our cruise as 39 day cruise but actually treated it as two cruises, 25 n 14. Consequently ATK and vista lounge shows were not fresh but repeats.

The Noordam is the perfect size ship. It is large enough to have all the amenities but not too big to feel overwhelming. The covered pool area was great for the cool New Zealand days The gym had adequate machines and wasn't overcrowded. We never had to wait for a table in the dining room and disembarkation at the ports ran smoothly. There were local ambassadors in both New Zealand and Australia (Maori & Aboriginal )who gave us an insight into their culture. They provided activities every day.

Enjoyable, all the staff were very attentive but the furnishing could do with updating
Ups and Downs

Not good stabilizers. Entertainment mediocre except for one concert pianist and a five piece string group. Food medium...except for one specialty restaurant. One Tender pilot nearly caused an accident by racing to overtake our tender back to ship (from Cairns). Staff was good and friendly. Charged for water bottles to take for excursions and they were not even chilled.
