We used to love the Maasdam, but that was a long time ago. Now she is old and in bad shape. Although the crew was wonderful, the ship its usual sparkling clean, maintenance problems were evident everywhere. At least one elevator was always "down"; one time 7 of the 8 were out. Water leaks, plumbing problems, out of order signs - not what we expect from Holland America. I wish she could be replaced with a same-sized new ship.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 52-day cruise aboard the Maasdam. It is our second long cruise on this vessel, they never disappoint. We really like the crew, the excellent service from the Shore Excursions People, the onboard Lectures, the Computer Instruction Classes, and the Library with Librarian who runs book groups reviewing/discussing books dealing with our destinations or some matter pertinent to our ports-of-call.
Maasdam & holland america
Reviewed on: 24 Jan 2017
Staff was great, entertainment, services, & daily programs were great. Most of the food ( breakfast & lunch) was great. Dinners, however, left us & our fellow travelers wondering why holland america is trying to make the dinners extra fancy. The pairings left us wondering, what are they thinking. Many times we asked for changes. And every now and then have something like meatloaf or fried chicken.
A nice old lady
Reviewed on: 21 Jan 2017
The Maasdam is one of Holland America's older ships, and she may be nearing the end of the line, but she still delivers a nice cruise experience. The veranda cabin was a bit cramped, but the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass deck door gives a sense of openness and a great view. The cabin only has three electric outlets -- one is hidden behind (and used by) the TV, another is in the bathroom. That leaves one outlet by the vanity table for practical recharging of all your devices. The onboard entertainment was about what you'd expect on a cruise ship -- worth a visit. The Lido deck buffet food was adequate, but the Pinnacle Grill food was spectacularly good. I recommend booking "anytime dining," which allows you to meet lots more people than having assigned-table-and-time dining.

Good cruise but not our best

Our cruise was nice . Staff excellent, food good. Problem is too many perks have been eliminated and keep getting eliminated from the cruises. No cocktail parties... no free internet for mariners...no extravaganous show of well know shows... no music at pool... and I could go on and on... It lacked activities. It was humdrum and what they sold in the shops was also boring. Did we enjoy .... we made our own good time ..and relaxed... yes and even booked another cruise. It's just cruising isn't what it used to be and I think it's going in the wrong direction.

It's an older ship, but still great customer service
Reviewed on: 05 May 2017
It was our third time on Maasdam, and we previously had some condition issues with our stateroom and the ship. We did not have any issues like that on the ship this time, and it seemed like they picked up their game in terms of keeping everything running well. The stewards, the room service and the front desk customer service were great! The food was wonderful and the dining room service was impecable. The entertainment and the enrichment programs were of good quality. We did not enjoy the shore excursions booked with HAL so much, and they were quite a bit more expensive than independently booked tours. Also the tender service was very slow, and one day we waited three hours in line to get into a tender. Later on they opened another gangway though, and the process got much quicker. We also got pretty sick on this cruise. There was apparently a flu circulating on the ship, and it was not well contained. This took a lot away from our experiece, and we did not have as much fun as usually.

Maasdam stateroom staff are above the average for Holland America and the other lines we have cruised with; front office staff are professional and polite. The dining staff are clueless about dietary allergies, more especially at the up-charge restaurants. The passage was safely executed; fog horns are entertaining for young children. The facilities are ageing but serviceable and where traffic is heavy, well maintained. We had a few land tours cancelled due to too few takers; the unchaperoned wanderings were as educational as the tours!

It's a warm feeling when the Staff recognize you and "welcome you home" even before you in your Stateroom! The Maasdam is a classic ship that goes beyond the big details and focuses on the small important ones: always addressing you by your name, helping getting a good seat for a show, helping to plan out a great excursion, having a wonderful dining experience. As a Staff member said "how was your vacation" we are glad your home and they meant it! I love the Maasdam - my home away home.

My stateroom was large and I liked its location. However, since the wall mounted thermostat was not working, it was impossible to regulate the temperature of the cabin. After a couple of HOT nights I requested a fan. Also, ship engineers adjusted the air conditioning system in my cabin and the temperature cooled somewhat. The temperature in the cabin became tolerable after those adjustments. A larger issue in the cabin was a loud pounding noise that was resonated down to Deck 6 from Deck 11 where they were repairing & replacing railings.

Excellent ship and service. Dining menu selection wasn't what it was on our last HA cruise, but I suspect a lot of things had to change after the recession to keep the cruise lines profitable. Nevertheless, we still had lobster tails, steak and escargot on the voyage in the main dining room. Some good shows in the theater as well, especially Mike, the ventriloquist. All good. A+

Better than expected
Reviewed on: 08 Jul 2018
Ship is old and it shows but not in any important ways. Common areas are all fine; cabin bathroom new counter and fixtures; cabin furniture getting scratched and threadbare. Cruise was full and it did not feel crowded, because (I think) it has more space per passenger than most or all others. Knowing its age, I was prepared for much worse, but the feeling of space and not being crowded at mealtime was far more important than cosmetic flaws mentioned above. Service excellent, as one expects from Holland America, and food fine. Pinnacle Grill not worth the surcharge - won't bother to do that again.

The ship was great... Our balcony was great. The staff were all great. The ports of call were great. The Trivial pursuit sessions were all entertaining and real ego bashers when you think you know everything. The smaller ship was a welcome surprise with no crowds queuing to embark or disembark. The Navigator lounge on deck 10 was very convenient, helpful, with excellent drinks and horsdoerves always available. We were disappointed that 3 of our party were not admitted because of their cabin category. There did seem to be a bit of confusion on which line was which when US immigration officials became involved with the passport checks. (but it was 10 times better than the chaos in other ports with all the luggage shuffling. )

Trip and service was great. No problems with ship or services in general. Food in buffet area was not as good as we recalled from previous Holland America cruises, food was frequently not as hot as we prefer. We did have issues with the hop on hop off bus in Halifax, Waited 90 minutes for buses that were supposed to be on a 30 minute schedule. Holland America did refund the bus portion of the tickets however we missed several attractions we had planned to visit. We enjoyed the cruise and the crew was excellent throughout the ship. However we had a few issues and complaints. The main issue was the lack of hot water in our cabin but this was fixed after about 24 hours and several complaints. We were very dissatisfied with the food in the main dining room. Nearly all the main dishes were padded with rice or pasta, were poorly described, vegetables were miniscule if at all. Coffee was bitter and it was nice to go ashore to get a real coffee. In the Pinacle Grill, apart from the speciality nights such as the Cellarmasters, the basic menu lacked imagination and/or taste. We had always enjoyed the Pinacle Grill on many other HAL ships but in our opinion they have certainly downgraded.
