We recently cruised with HAL on a trip from Hong Kong to Kobe, Japan. Though the cruise ports were great I fear that our experience with HAL was Great ports, not as great a ship. Dining was poor from the stand point of service, having to wait for two and a quarter hours to be fully served seem to us to be very poor service, especially when they tried to suggest that we leave the dining room even before the meal had been completely served. No on board lectures about the ports of call and their history when we were in such an interesting and historic part of the world. Our cabin had water problems that were not acknowledge or repaired until five days into the cruise. Poor tour companies on land tours and even worse ship chaperon who seemed to care little about the group to which they were assigned. The onboard talent was very good. Will probably not cruise with HAL soon and that is too bad as they have been a good cruise line for decades.
Terrific Ship and Staff

I've been on three HAL cruises since 2011. All three ships were wonderfully run. I particularly liked the staff at the Greenhouse Spa and the Thermal Suite. By day 2 they called me by name before looking at my card. The masseuse was great and I splurged on a hair treatment and style. Almost two weeks later, my hair is still soft and shiny. Also, I was very impressed with the entertainment on this cruise. The songs were much more up-to-date, the costumes inventive and singers and dancers very talented.Of course, Alaska was great, too. Glacier Bay was beautiful. I went on a short excursion at each stop and, even with rain at two stops, had a wonderful time. Definitely a great trip for families (and there were lots!) and couples as well as singles like me!

What a perfect combination of travel: flight, train, and motor coach from Anchorage to Vancouver. Never a dull moment! We loved the planned trips and got to add a few of our own. Our accomodations were good, food was great (we did the meal plan), and each day was a new adventure. We met wonderful people who will also be a part of our great memories of our Holland American experience!!

Ship Not Good
Reviewed on: 08 Sep 2014
This ship is not good. I know it is doing to dry dock 12/2014. The food is totally terrible. I can't say how shocked I was about food! The front office is completely inefficient. We had received 2 beverage cards and could not activate until 2nd day. Was told any beverage purchased prior to activation would be transferred to beverage card but was NOT. Lifeboat drill was extremely horrible and if anything, life threatening to any people subject to heat, over crowded conditions, etc. The crew kept people standing on deck for much too long waiting for passengers to board ship!! They should have waited. The crew was hateful and rude. This was 2nd trip on Holland and likely LAST. Last cruise 2010 (Holland) was great in every way. Everything about this ship was horrible except for cabin and people who took care of it. Crew at bars were rude and inefficient. Crew in white uniforms with gold and black emblems not helpful and rude! Disappointing onboard experience at best!

The HA ship was great, not a big ship which is good for me as I get lost easily. Loved the day of the week mats in the elevators. Service and food were very good and staff is so accommodating. Entertainment and social activities were great selections. Reasonable rates. Staff seem genuinely friendly. I would recommend HA anytime.

While this is an older ship we found that to be a plus. There is a comfortable promenade and plenty of places to simply relax and enjoy some private time. Staff, especially waitresses are excellent. Food quality great, but needs a little more variety in the buffet. This was our first cruise on Holland America and we were not used to placing a request for entrees instead of serving ourselves, but it seemed to go well. Never felt crowded on board or suffered long lines.

Right size ship - great restaurant staff
Reviewed on: 09 Jul 2015
I'll mention I'm not a fan of huge floating hotels... however the Volendam was a good experience with plenty space in our stateroom, beautiful sight lines from the restaurant and easy access to indoor and outdoor sightseeing. The Lido deck buffet was pretty standard fare and we only did lunch there - quick and easy. Breakfast in the room was on time, hot, and very good - beats the buffet. The cruise into Glacier Bay was spectacular and the whales between Ketchikan and Vancouver were right along side the ship - cool. Holland America left us a little disappointed with some of their land accommodations but what they do best is cruise - the Volendam was great.

JoAnne made everything so easy. Recommended beverage package, a great value. Our Alaska cruise on Volendam was amazing. The ship, meals and all crew were wonderful, the only problem was a loud rushing water noise intermittently all week. Brother and sister in law next door had same problem, never resolved. Have sailed other cruise lines before but would only sail Holland America again, would highly recommend.

Over-all it was a great trip. -the ship was well furnished and attractive. Thanks to Eric -we upgraded to a window cabin view which worked out well and the cabin was surprisingly large enough and well laid out. My wife loved the bath tub. -the cities visited were exceptional, the Hong Kong stay at the Grand Harbour Kowloon hotel was a great experience with a harbour view that was unforgettable and we did tours of the city , Shanghai overnight, Beijing overnight, Seoul and Jeju, in South Korea, Osaka, Nagasaki, and an overnight stay in Tokyo at the Inter Continental Tokyo Bay with a bay view that was breath taking. -the shore excursion dealt with all the highlights of all the cities, walking on the Great Wall, seeing the Forbidden City etc. The places were more modern that we would have thought, with buildings going up everywhere. The ship had a guest lecturer who gave us the history of China We had one minor problem with the librarian, but the font desk staff solved it

We were treated very well because we bought into the neptune suite section. The Neptune Lounge is a real bonus on this ship and the two concierges went out of their way to make things work or more pleasant for us. We did not think the food in the main dining room was that good. The menu has not changed in a long time and it is time to update it to more modern tastes. There was too much in the way of meat and heavy gravies and desserts. We took quite a few meals in the Lido Deck and in our room, although room service is from the main dining room so heavy food was the order of the day. We would have liked to hear some history of the area lectures but there were none. The shops on board were boring .

FOR THE MOST PART WE HAD A GREAT TIME ON THE VOLENDAM. THAT SAID, THE PINNACLE GRILL BREAKFAST SERVICE WAS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE DUE TO VERY SLOW SERVICE AND SCREWED UP ORDERS. WE GAVE UP HAVING BREAKFAST THERE IN SPITE OF IT BEING TOUTED BY HAL AS ONE OF THE GREAT PERKS OF BEING IN A NEPTUNE SUITE. ONE TERRIBLE DISCOVERY WE MADE IS THAT AS A COST REDUCTION MOVE BY HAL, THEY HAVE ELIMINATED HAVING A BRIDGE DIRECTOR ON CRUISES LESS THAT 30 DAYS!. THIS IS A DEAL-BREAKER FOR MY WIFE AND I, AND WE PROBABLY HAVE TAKEN OUR LAST CRUISE WITH HAL UNLESS THIS DUMB MOVE IS RECTIFIED.

Our cruise on the Holland America Volendam was perfect! The cruise had a crew of 600 with 1200 passengers. There was never a wait or line for anything. The food in the dining room was spectacular and the food in the Lido was delicious. The wait staff was friendly, personable, attentive and helpful. The evening events were fun and entertaining in the auditorium, the music groups in the bar areas were talented and personable. They even had recent movies in the small theater, and they streamed great movies on our television in the suite. Our suite was a good size with ample storage, a king-sized bed, a window, and a desk. We couldn't ask for a better trip!

Generally very good. This was our second cruise to Alaska and, unfortunately, because we were rather late in booking were unable to get a verandah stateroom. To us, the major draw is the scenery and being limited because of partial obstruction (lower promenade deck) were not as able to benefit from the views from our room as much as we wanted. The food at times in the dining room was saltier than we would have liked and in general was geared to middle of the road palates. I did resent having to pay for so many extras, in particular specialty coffees. Nonetheless the service was very good as to expected. The staff do try hard.

Enjoyed the shows and the food in the Lido. The dining room entrees were not terribly interesting and the white wine (from Snoqualmy (sp) Washington, I think) that I purchased there was overly sweet and virtually undrinkable -- I suggest you don't carry that brand again. The pool and exercise room were great, as was the service as a whole, especially getting us on board for the first time. Much appreciated. I would have liked a few more "you are here" signs in the various lounges -- I kept getting confused about where fore and aft were. The smoking allowed in the gambling area was annoying, because wherever I was going it seemed I had to pass through that part of the ship, and smoke of any kind makes breathing difficult. Had a terrific trip, though, and wonderful weather. Delightful staff. Thank you.

The ship was very nice every crew member went out of there way to help you. There was plenty of room on the ship and places to get away from people if you wanted. The room was way above my expectation's, even had a sofa in there. We got lucky and originally booked a interior cabin and was able to bump up to outside window view cabin days before we sailed. There was plenty to keep busy if you choose to keep busy. We went and played Bingo and won $201 one evening went to a show one night, and stopped in couple lounges to listen to some live entertainment they were all very good. We choose to only eat at the main buffet which we were little disappointed in along with the deserts. The Taco bar which was open for lunch was very good.

The ship was going into dry dock and consequently many of the "niceities" assoicated with Holland America were not there. The disembarkation in Singapore was a disaster when the paid for trip to the airport transport was late arriving, a whole crew of workers arrived at the same location, confusion reigned supreme. Further those of us departing from Terminal 4 at the Singaport airport had to get off at Terminal 1 and walk mostly to 4 with our babbage. Not a good send off.

Ship was fine, but lousy dining room service
Reviewed on: 17 Jan 2018
This was a pleasant cruise in a pleasant environment, but the dining room service, particularly in the main dining room, was consistently bad. Worst we've had as experienced HAL passengers. Food was served cold after long waits. Waitstaff were inattentive and rushing around. It just did not meet the usual Holland America standards for service at all. Our cabin stewards were fine, but if we'd wanted them to be available and helpful, I'm not sure that would have happened -- they made themselves scarce, though did their usual tasks well. Perhaps it was because all the service staff were strained by a ship that was supposed to be close to or at passenger capacity. In any event, HAL should have staffed up for that and they obviously did not. Various dining companions we had agreed. In addition, we got contradictory information about various visa issues both before and during the cruise. There were definitely communication issues among HAL staff. Fortunately, nothing went wrong.
