Not so good any more

By: Brittany22

Reviewed on: 11 Oct 2013

What used to be the best when it began in the mid '90's has so deteriorated to the point that one used to Virtuoso standards has to back off. Food became just ordinary and sometimes really bad. Senior Corp management that has since been replaced had such a bad attitude that turned off countless people. Not caring on ships became all too familiar to those who have high standards and know the difference. Two smaller ships old and just do no cut it any more.

The cruise over all was an ok sailing.  The crew was first rate, they try hard to please and always treat you like extended family.  The food was great except one time our room service meal was sub-par.On the negative...The cruise director was a joke.  He was not/is not in the right job.  You can train an 8th grader to read the announcements that are in the morning chronicles. (That is all he ever did.) He did not interact with guests, my wife didn't even know we had a cruise director, I had to point him out the 5th day. We had several rainy stormy days, not once did he come up with some fun activity for the guests.  I did not enjoy this cruise as much as past S.S. sailings because we never really got to meet other guests because we were sequestered in our rooms, with no leadership from the cruise director.  The Shadow is tired...We sailed in in 06, and the difference in appearance is startling. Needs cleaning badly...

Will recommend.

After you sail with Silver Seas, you'll never want to consider any other cruise line! From the moment we stepped foot on the ship, we felt the staff genuinely wanted us to be there, they were warm, friendly and welcoming. Our cabin exceeded our expectations, the food and beverages were spectacular, the activities and tours were educational and invigorating, and the views were unbelievable! We were made to feel like royalty and we loved it. The only negative of the entire cruise was the ending!

First of all, this web page does not work properly... i was ready to submit with a bunch of comments, but forgot to fill in headline... usually no problem. Filled in but then would only allow me to skip, not submit - lost all my comments - about 500 characters worth... fix the form... With Knightly tours we were left to our own devises... both baggage and tranportation transfers were left to us to arrange at the local destinations and also unclear steps as where to meet when there were arrangements. Accommodations at Denali were inadequate. We had to stay in small cabins, with wall mounted space heaters and an extremely small bathroom that was disconnected from the sink which was in the middle of the room. There were 7 fairly new lodge building with average hotel accommodations and several other hotels in town that would have been better. We asked Angela to follow up with cruise to identify formal dress nights - but no reponse was given - there were only options formal nights.

From our helpful butler, Neil, and his assistant to the cruise director to the captain, everyone aboard conveyed a sense of enjoying being of service to passengers. Festive seasonal decorations and attention to detail at all of the restaurants made for a relaxing experience and a culinary delight. For entertainment, we heard performing singers, a charming duo at The Bar, and a quartet. We listened to lectures, went to wine and cocktail tastings, and met staff at receptions. We enjoyed having a large tub, separate shower, and double sinks in our bathroom and sitting on our veranda. With the information provided in Chronicles and the knowledge gained from excursions, we attained in-depth insight into Chile and Peru. Our pre-cruise trip to Santiago and Easter Island exceeded our expectations in numerous ways with our island room overlooking the ocean and valuable insight provided by Cecilia, who took us to numerous stunning sites. Then more days to Pitcairn where there is no landing also. It was 12 sea days out of the gate and then one more port further on, Roratonga, where we couldn't make port! We have never cruised before, and had no interest in cruising with 4000 of our closest friends. Silversea is a different class altogether. The Silver Shadow was a small ship, with 360 guests and 350 crew. We were treated wonderfully throughout the journey. I was leery of having a butler, as I thought it would be an intrusion. Instead, Rosie our butler was delightful, anticipating our needs, making reservations, bringing us wine and cheese at 4 every afternoon in our suite, and being unobtrusive. The food was outstanding, even in the main dining room. The service was extraordinary. Even the entertainment, usually 2nd rate, was excellent, with the singers mingling freely with the guests. The ship was small enough to get into the smaller Sitka harbor, but large enough to be comfortable at sea. The whole experience was classy and enjoyable, and I would do this again with no reservations.

My recent cruise on Silver Shadow was mixed with great pleasure and some disappointment. Staff and officers were their usual helpful and friendly selves, especially my suite butler and suite attendant. I was most disappointed with the Dining Room. It seemed to me to be badly understaffed and the mix of nationalities (instead of heavy majority Philippinos) did not seem to have the team "vibe" and many, especially the European dining room crew, appeared under-trained. I think the strain of manning the new Muse made all the other ships give up too many well trained staff and they had to scramble to get what they could. Needs work!

Last time on Silver Shadow was 2006, but it was in incredible shape with a great crew. They should stop doing "formal" nights or at least enforce the dress code. Chef was extremely creative and did an amazing job with special diets, especially sugar-free desserts. Captain was engaging, very conservative and safe. Boarded in HK for SE Asia. Long ride to Hanoi (3+ hours by van) was well worth it. Be sure to see the "Hanoi Hilton" prison. We missed Hué due to rough seas. Saigon was chaotic. Destination lecturer made Bangkok sound scary but Shadow is small and docked in town which is awesome! It was just congested. Went straight to SIN at end to get to Siem Reap, Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. Our Virtuoso agent, Jay (and Debbie) set us up with an incredible personal guide. Our time on Silver Shadow

By: Bird

Reviewed on: 09 Mar 2019

Our time on Silver Shadow was mostly delightful. Service was excellent, with eager and pleasant staff. Our cabin, #710, was pleasant and relaxing. We enjoyed the public areas of the ship, the pool area, and the two lounges, front and rear, which were always good for reading, or just getting away for quiet time. This tour was in the tropics, with warm temperatures, and the need for shade during sea days in the pool areas was major - we would suggest any improvements to include more shaded areas around the pool, and on the deck just above it. Pool staff were always good to find us a place for shade, if they could. The décor of the ship is dated, and we learned it will go into renovation later in 2019. A more crisp, modern feeling to the public areas and the cabins would be good, with less dark wood, mirror and crystal.

We very much enjoyed our experience aboard Silver Shadow. Service was excellent, and staff and crew were exceptionally pleasant. Our butler was personable and accommodating. The two lounges front and rear, with no music were relaxing and our favorite places to sit with drinks or to read. The pool staff were most accommodating. With the redesign of the ship now scheduled, it would be good to increase the amount of shade for the pool lounges - in hot climates, most of your guests would like to be out of the sun. Food on board was excellent, but we expected more emphasis on foods of SE Asia. Off-ship tours were mostly top-notch, but some tours were more rigorous than described. For the meals provided by on the excursions, it would have been good for the guides to dine with the attendees, since they could best explain the local dishes we were enjoying. We will highly recommend Silversea to our friends.

A personal favorite ship of mine even though she is now much older and needs some upgrades. Staff as always sensational. I believe this lovely ship is going in for major refurbishment this year. Hope they still keep her.

We had a very pleasant experience on the Shadow. The staff were very attentive and saw to our every needs. The food also was very good. Also enjoyed the gym & spa. The ports of call were fantastic and we enjoyed the excursions. There were signs that the ship was getting tired. Still a positive experience though.

Yes, she is starting to show her age but not in a bad way. Shadow goes in to dry dock in Nov. but is very clean and the staff is the best. I hear complaints but don’t really understand why. The food is delicious, the size of the ship is perfect and we loved our trip.

Not Recommended

The ship was tired and badly needed updating and the staff poorly trained.

Not up to our expectations and not worth the price of a "luxury cruise". With the exception of the La Dome dinning the food and service was very so-so. The wine pairings were cheap and again not up to a luxury standard.

Athens/Nice cruise

Our first ocean cruise was on the Shadow in 2005. Nice ship, but dated and needs the refurbishment planned for this fall. Staff was very nice and made us feel at home. We took two cruises back to back and were shocked that being in Cannes for two days during the International Film Festival that tickets to see a film were not available. Same situation for Monte Carlo during the Grand Prix when only excursion available cost well over $3,000 pp for two days. What about a 1/2 day general admission to be able to tour the area with credentials for a minimum fee - all these areas were closed to non-credentialed individuals..
