The Orion is a beautiful ship with anything on board any traveler could ask for. The food is excellent, the staff is always helpful and attentive. Our cabin stewards were there at every turn as was dining room staff. A delightful cruise on a lovely ship.

There isn't much to do on the ship. Usually one show a night, some nights we don't have anything but movie on the big screen. There is a good selection of movies, TV shows in the stateroom. The ship is new, nice and clean. Staff are very friendly. there is not a good variety of food at the Buffet and high tea. The food in all areas did not meet my expectation. However, the specialty restaurants are very good. The spa is amazing.... with therapy pool, sauna, steam room, ice room. The operation system in the dining room is not organized. Sometimes different staff would come by and ask the same questions within 5 minutes, and sometimes we felt they were too busy to acknowledging our presence. I feel the included excursions are not meaningful and the optional excursions are overpriced. Overall based on my experience on Viking Orion, Viking Ocean is over rated.

Great Australian Cruise

Reviewed on: 20 Jul 2019

Our trip on the Viking Orion was our first ocean cruise with Viking (previously we had had a couple of very good experiences with Oceania and had taken one Viking river cruise) I wondered how the food and service with Viking would compare with Oceania. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they seem very comparable. We found the preparation and selection of food to be excellent and really enjoyed several meals at th Chef's Table, where menus rotate every three or four days. We were not overly impressed with the complimentary shore excursions (but then, Oceania does not have any complimentary excursions.) Perhaps because we were mostly in Australia the non-complimentary excursions were not cheap, but we did enjoy them. The ship-wide complimentary internet was a real plus.

Ship was beautiful and stateroom perfect with great room steward. The service was inconsistent in the lounges and restaurants, sometimes very good and other times not so good. For me the Chef's Table was a terrible meal (bad menu) and I thought it was really tacky that Viking would not serve the menu paired wines to us because we did not buy the Silver Spirits package. Crystal will always be are first choice (hard to compete), but overall we really enjoyed our Viking Orion cruise.

Cruise Hong Kong to Toyko

Reviewed on: 15 May 2019

Ship was beautifully appointed, plenty of room with easy to find comfortable chairs to relax, food was plentiful, staff were fantastic. Cabin very comfortable and lots of hot water for showers. Best ship in the 22 cruises I've been on. Excursions could be improved on - filling a bus with passengers and just the one guide was not a good idea when some passengers were not able to keep up with the crowd. This was our only disappointment

Delighted. Staff were polite, happy, courteous, and competent. Food was great. Amenities were excellent, including seating areas to read, spa, and gym. Lecturers were first class. Only complaint was with the excursion management team: they weren’t always as knowledgeable of destinations as appropriate, weren’t always as polite as appropriate, and provided conflicting data between different team members. We were sold one trip: Hong Kong to Vancouver; in reality it was two: Hong Kong to Tokyo, and Tokyo to Vancouver. This resulted in misleading information and surprises, lost opportunities, and duplication of lectures and entertainment shows. Not appropriate.

9 out of 10. Only issue was pre-cruise option, which was 0 out of 10 (or minus if that was possible) because no one seemed to know about it, so it was a high price option with no joy. Cabin location was pretty bad, but we didn't know till cruise (located directly over theatre stage which made it very noisy up until 11:00pm almost daily including dress rehearsals in the afternoons).

Excellent ship and all crew that we had anything to do with. Pity the pens supplied in cabins were not more reliable. Pity we were not provided with maps of the Aleutian islands that we passed. Only one for which we got a map was around Dutch Harbour. Some had volcanoes some dormant, some had small settlements. No even simple maps of Alascan coast that would have been so interesting.

The Viking Orion is a modern ship with many of the features one would expect from a new vessel. For example the staterooms are very functional ( first room I have ever had where I did not use all the drawers available ). The entertainment was very good, the staff were very friendly, many told us how much they liked working for Viking. Most of my fellow "cruisers" felt the food quality was good. I would sum up by saying you get a lot of bang for your buck with Viking Cruises ( on the Viking Orion)

Second time was much better

By: Johnawc

Reviewed on: 18 Oct 2019

This was our second trip on this ship. The first time was right after she was commissioned. That trip was OK but not great. It was obvious that the crew was green and that there were kinks that still needed to be worked out. Fast forward one year, and the changes were significant. Almost all of the issues that we had identified in our first critique had been fixed. It was a very enjoyable trip. However, when dealing with Viking, there are two very different cultures--the shipboard culture and the shore based office culture. The shipboard culture is all about the experience and customer service. The shore based culture is not. We have made 30+ cruises and we have dealt with many of these offices. Most are pretty much the same--very helpful, efficient, and customer oriented. Viking does not share these qualities. I would never book a Viking cruise directly. Having an agent to deal with their front office is a must.

Brand new ship. Very well appointed. Penthouse Suite service was quite good but did not have a butler like on Oceania. Lectures and entertainment were outstanding. Hong Kong go Bangkok... great cruise. Ship is modern and immaculate. Holds 900 passengers but never felt crowded. No wait time in restaurants; easy disembarking at ports. Viking Orion - Thailand to Bali Nov/Dec'19

I have serious doubts that Viking Orion is 5 star. Seabourn and Azamara were far better. The food in the 'Restaurant' was ordinary with some unimaginative dishes served up. The food in the cafe was likewise... same old, same old, each day. There were some different foods offered (eg sushi & sashimi), that were a nice change from the norm. The shore excursions were a debacle. Where Seabourn, Azamara and Princess had a 'ship representative' in all groups, Viking had none and therefore were unaware of the mess that the guides got the groups into. The shore excursion in Jakarta was particularly poorly organised. When the Travel Desk personnel were told (by some of the other guests who we spoke to) they were dismissive. The laundromat was good, in that the machines dispensed the detergent and passengers did not have to buy it like in all other cruises we have been on. They also did not advertise galley or bridge tours which some passengers did. The 'Explorer Dome' was good.

We were a little disappointed. Viking has always been great and far above average. This trip was just average, certainly did not exceed our expectations. Dining room was very slow. Seems like we were invisible most of the time. Although we did have some good wait staff, but not often. Food was ok, nothing special. Chef’s Table was good, but all the dinners were Asian inspired. Had a wonderful massage with Vladimir and one with Tommy. Cruise director and assistant director were good, outstanding voices.

Pleasant Voyage

We recently enjoyed a 15-day cruise on the Viking Orion from Auckland, New Zealand, to Sydney, Australia. We loved the small-ship feel of the Orion - intimate yet with plenty of space and activities for the 900 or so passengers on board. Food was excellent, service superb and entertainment top notch. We greatly enjoyed daily presentations by a distinguished trio of academics on subjects ranging from the history and geology of the areas we visited to the wonders of the solar system and beyond. We were also charmed by the dulcet tones of the classical duet on violin and cello. We had somewhat mixed feelings about excursions - most were very good, but a few provided less than expected. This, certainly, is a matter of taste and in no way detracted from what we felt was a superb cruise overall. Viking certainly has the formula for a comfortable, vibrant, luxe cruise down to a science!

Most enjoyable. Stateroom was a tad small, but very functional with great room service. We took all the included tours which were adequate at best, with a few disappointments. In general we saw most, but not all, the highlights. Understanding that you're at the mercy of who you get for a guide, Sydney was the worst -- she spent most of the time talking about sights to see later (although we sailed at the tour's end) and where she was going to party for Chinese New Year. In NZ, the drivers served as guides which was much more informative. Food and food servers were great. On-board lectures and port talks were great. The stop at "Rotorua" is a misnomer as we never got close to it being 50 miles from the port of Tauranga, although Tauranga itself is a very pleasant stop. Transfers were efficient. Wi-Fi was appreciated, albeit rather slow. Overall staff interaction was among the best ever!

This was the best cruise ever!!! The Orion is a beautiful ocean vessel and the Captain, all Directors and all of the crew were very warm, friendly, helpful and happy. I would say it was the best cruise I have ever taken. The entertainment was top-notch, the food, service, and overall ship accommodations were lovely and roomy and there were plenty of places one could find to quietly sit. On the down side... The Orion, being a smaller ocean-going vessel does not handle the seas as well as larger ships I've been on and we did experience some rough seas. It was a few days after embarkation that I finally didn't feel like I was swaying. I always prefer a veranda, however, we were so busy I didn't have any time to sit out there! The cabin we had, #4064, was a challenging layout for 2 persons. Whether a couple or two traveling singles, the closet location was terribly inconvenient. Should I travel on a vessel like this again I would prefer a larger cabin with a different layout,
