Though in some ways we prefer Holland America's smaller. older ships, we sound much to like about the Nieuw Statendam. The Lincoln Center musicians were wonderful, as was the Tiny Liitle Bigband, which performs only occasionally aboard HAL. The food was very good, and the service smooth for a maiden voyage.

My wife and I spent a lot of time resting because the bed was so good! The entertainment was good in the venues that we attended, which included the Billboard Onboard, the Rolling Stone Rock Room, and the BB King's Blues Club. We also enjoyed the World Stage productions and lectures. We did note, however, that the venues were cold and we had to dress warm to be comfortable.

Beautiful ship, wonderful entertainment, attentive crew. Food was not up to previous four cruises with HAL. Felt there was less crew than other HAL cruises. When launching a new ship it would pay to over staff. Shops were adjacent to Lincoln Center Stage which was distracting to performances. Too much solicitation by shops with auctions, paper fliers and World Stage presentations. Cheapens the experience. Placement of casino with smoking allowed made for a “stinky” trip to the World Stage performances. Liked the in room technology.

Too Big? No. Too Many Guests? No. Would I sail on her again?

Reviewed on: 10 Feb 2019

I don't know. Her decor is modern. Showroom entertainment is modern. MDR cuisine varied from very good to OK. Much emphasis on the Music Walk concept which was enjoyable. No sense of too many people at any time which was different from the Royal Princess cruise that I had just left. Service met the HAL standard that I expect. But, the "feel" was somehow different from my most recent HAL cruise (Zaandam, 12/17-1/18) and the others that preceded that cruise. The two cruises were very good. Memorable: No. Other than being on the 6th and 7th cruises of this new ship.

The ship is beautiful but is designed for a much older crowd. The public spaces look nice but the chairs in the lounges and open areas are not comfortable at all. The average age for our trip was between 75-80 and we were in our 50’s. I wouldn’t recommend this line unless you are older.

Terrible Experience

By: WorkingJoe

Reviewed on: 23 Apr 2019

The crew was rude, especially the bartenders. Most treated us and spoke to us like children. Especially the on the phone with room service and information. Information was the most unhelpful "service" on the boat. They would answer questions with questions or defer to another contact which would then tell us to call "information". At the end of the cruise we had to wait 3 hours for the return of two bottles of Rum we picked up in Puerto Rico. It seemed they lost them so it was a good thing we hung onto the tag they gave up because they asked for it twice. We learned from other cruisers to just sneak it in. The security returning back to the boat is rushed and easy to bring whatever you want past them. The food was usually good, but the premium dinner DeLibrije was disgusting and overpriced. I've never left a restaurant hungry before. The casino is so small there were times there were no slot machines available and the drink service was non-existant. Don't waste your money!

The Nieuw Statendam had it's pluses and minuses. The Lido cafeteria was the best of any ship we have ever been on. The gym was great and had plenty of machines. However this ship's promenade deck, (something we book cruises for) is lacking views of the ocean. They have the lifeboats alongside the entire promenade deck on both sides, blocking the ocean views. The promenade deck was way too narrow and there were no deck chairs. Service in the main dinning room was very slow, it took at least 1 hour before being served our entree. The main dining room was never decorated (the same every night). Maybe we are spoiled, the Maasdam main dining room was decorated on formal nights and for holidays. The ship was too big and too crowded. We will book Holland's older, smaller ships in the future.

Mixed bag

The Nieuw Statendam is a new ship. And the frites at the Dutch Cafe were the best. The shower was large and really enjoyable. The food was outstanding. The excursions were a mixed bag. The comedians were great and the American Test Kitchen presentations were enjoyable. There were not enough activities for the sea days. They have no self service laundry and no library on board. Excursion meeting place was not well handled in terms of communication and implementation.

Baltic Cruise On The Nieuw Statendam

This was my 38th cruise. I've traveled on all sizes, but this was the largest. Pros: Fabulous new ship, amazing programs: Blend Your Own Wine, America's Test Kitchen, Lincoln Center Stage, and several other music venues. Great shows at night. Fabulous rooms with a nice new decor. Didn't want to leave the large great shower! Food was the best I've had on any ship in a long time--even the Lido which on HA last year was horrible. Specialty restaurants quite good. Staff were all great, always willing to help. Embarkation and Departure handled well. We were amazed at how quickly we were on the ship. Cons: I think this next comment is strictly individual preference. We love one comfy leather, romantic bar with low music, a library, and being up in the Crow's Nest. This new ship had loud music everywhere including the halls. Gone was a lounge like that or library. We will probably book a smaller ship, plus the Crow's Nest just not big enough for ship this size.

A new class of ship for us and a good experience.

By: Rod L.

Reviewed on: 29 Jun 2019

I was prepared not to like the Pinnacle class of HAL ships. Once I got into the new flow of things I have to say I like it a lot. Proper use of the "Music Walk" was the key for me. I was not surprised that I liked the Lincoln Center Stage and BB King's Blues Club. Both of the bands (quintet in the LCS) were very talented. The surprise was the Rolling Stone Rock Room. My expectations were pretty low for that venue but the band playing there was excellent. In particular the lead guitarist/soloist, Lelani, was outstanding. Their versatility allowed them to pick from a very broad selection of 'rock' songs. That variety put them over the top. We were on the ship for 3 back-to-back cruises, trans-Atlantic, Norway and the Baltic. This gave us plenty of time to get used to the ship and give it a fair assessment. We ate in all the restaurants and they were great. The big surprise was the Lido. It was at a very high standard, fresh & well prepared. I would return to this ship again

Norway cruise

By: Etraveler

Reviewed on: 08 Jul 2019

We love the older HAL ships. They are comfortable and accommodating. We were very disappointed with Nieuw Statendam. There were so many passengers that there was seldom any available space in the public areas to sit and look at the passing scenery. We normally book an inside, center-of-the-ship cabin for stability, and spend most of our time at a window looking at the views. On Nieuw Statendam, we usually had to revert to our cabin and watch the views from the bow camera or the rear camera. And the cabin was so small that it was uncomfortable to try that. No seats for watching TV, only the beds or the one stool at the desk. We noticed that other cabins were also smaller than on the older ships. This is very disappointing. We did enjoy the two restaurants we tried, especially the Tamarind. The food was excellent and the service was superb, but so was the service in the main dining room, and even in the Lido.
