Having taken a Viking River Cruise before and enjoyed it enormously, we did have high expectations for this new area of cruising for Viking. They did a very good job. This was only their 2nd sailing (I think) and so there were a few kinks to work out, but all in all, they did a wonderful job. The ship itself was lovely, well laid out, great spaces for reading, visiting, games, etc. The food was perhaps the best we've had on the various cruises we have taken. Always very good and sometimes, even better then that. The lectures provided on both the ports as well as the areas visited are exceptional and with a depth of knowledge that is impressive. For the most part, every guide was also of the highest caliber - deeply knowledgeable and easy to understand. Without a doubt, Viking has become one of our favorite ways of traveling.

We had taken a Viking Ocean cruise several years ago and while we enjoyed it, we did not rate it as top value. So when we chose the Into the Midnight Sun cruise we were not expecting to love the ship as much as the itinerary. Wow, were we wrong! This was our 19th cruise and first on Viking Ocean and EVERYTHING about this ship favored comparably with other cruises we have taken. The food, cabins, service, decor were all outstanding. Our cruise director, Heather Clancy, was the best ever. The cabins could use more storage but I understand Viking is making modifications in the new ships. The trip from London to Bergen was fabulous. I wanted to stay onboard and repeat the entire thing!

We enjoyed the ship very much. The stateroom was comfortable and accommodated all of our belongings. The food in all of the restaurants was delicious with a good selection. The ship was easy to get around. We did not do much shopping on the ship because it was fun to make purchases ashore. The ports of call were a nice variety with good local guides and comfortable buses. Going ashore was very well organized. We enjoyed the time spent in the Atrium and Wintergarden with music. Also the shows in Torshavn and the Star Theater were very entertaining. All of the crew members were very friendly and accommodating.

Wonderful Ship

The Viking Sky is magnificent if you prefer a quiet adult atmosphere. Our Viking Homelands itinerary was unbelievable and is highly recommended. The food was excellent, the service top notch and the on board staff was helpful and more responsive than the administrative staff that one deals with prior to the cruise. The bars, lounges and other spaces were magnificent. The musicians were excellent. The only issue that we had was scheduling tours. We were in the lowest category of room and had the last choice. We spent a lot of time trying to get the tours that we wanted as well as close to the times that we wanted. It was not easy but we did manage. The included walking tours were excellent. We did schedule some tours on our own. Viking seems to expect that you will do their tours and does not provide a lot of information for independent tour passengers.

My Viking Ocean Cruise

Great. Since this was my first time on Viking I wasn't sure what to expect. From what I read about it I thought I would like it. It was similar to other premimum cruise lines that I have been on. I loved that they handed you warm towels when you reboarded the ship after a day of touring to wipe (sanitize) your hands. I really liked the easy listening music in the atrium every evening and at tea time whether it was piano, guitar or the classical trio(violin, flute and cello). It was a relaxed atmosphere where you felt comfortable any where you went.

The cruise was beautiful. We had wonderful service throughout. Only two problems, the excursins need to be better regulated as to capabilities. We ere slowed down and missed some things that we would liked to have seen. Next, Sunday night, the goodbye event was lovely, fun and way too crowded. Standing room only, people surely if you blocked their view. This should be done with a reservation and doors shut at a set time.

This was our second ocean cruise on a Viking Ocean line. Clearly, the first one was so good that we returned for a second cruise with a different itinerary. We were equally as pleased with the second trip. Viking is a top notch line. They anticipate every detail and provide a high level of service. The staff is always ready, willing, and able to meet every desire. Our only problem is that we all gained weight because the food is that good!

Not Our Cup of Tea

The Sky is hard to review. The crew at all levels was beyond pleasant and helpful. Really first Class. They handled transfers very well. In fact they handled pretty much everything very well. At 900+ the ship is quite a bit bigger than we usually sail on. The rooms were quite a bit smaller than we are used to in the same class of service. The internet is was too slow to conduct business. We felt the food was mediocre, although the specialty restaurants were fine. The included wine was repetitious and average and the drink package was overpriced. The included Tours were crowded. All in all, not our cup of tea.

Our Viking Sky cruise was cancelled (a few days prior to departure) by Viking due to mechanical failure of the ship. Cindy Bown, our Travel Edge travel agent was a pleasure to work while planning our trip. She continues to be even more amazing as we navigate through the process of receiving our refunds from Viking. Her attention to detail is commendable. Our trust in Cindy has led us to booking our next Viking Cruise (March 2020) with Cindy as our agent.

22 day Baltic Cruise on Viking Sky

By: Dhd

Reviewed on: 10 Jun 2019

We took this trip just a few weeks after the Viking Sky had an emergency evacuation when its engines failed off the northern Norway cost. At the time of our cruise the ship was in excellent shape with no perceived issues after that event. When we talked about the evacuation with the crew they replied that they had been trained for it. Made it sound like just another days work. Nothing but praise for this cruise. Food was excellent, staff were super friendly, appointments and decorations throughout the ship were sleek, stylish and modern. Free shore excursions were offered at each port along with paid excursions. One of the paid excursions had some disappointments, and Viking voluntarily refunded 25% of the excursion fee. The ports of call each had their own special value (except Gothenburg, you could skip that one for me). And we loved the entertainers, who were uniformly good. Highlight--Loud R&R music and crew dancing at the gangway to welcome us back from a delayed excursion.

We quite enjoyed our voyage on the Viking Sky. The cabin and public areas are very nicely designed. Our only concern was the inconsistency of service level provided in the dining room at dinner and in some instances the lounge area. The Dining Room Manager took steps to address our concerns which we greatly appreciated. The cabin staff were excellent and met all our needs. Viking Ocean could take a few lessons from Oceania in food service and choices, however, we would certainly sail again. Entertainment crew were exceptional.

It was a great cruise. The ship was lovely and the food, shows and staff were very good. It was our first Viking cruise and we would go on their cruise line again. Our only complaint was the excursion called A Taste of Norway. It was very expensive (almost $550) and we and our friends we traveled with felt like it was a rip-off. We filled out a cruise survey before we got off the ship. We should have had a refund for that excursion and it was only one and a half hours long. We went on 7 hour tours for less money that were outstanding!!!

Entertainment was excellent. Cabin stewards went above and beyond to make our stay and accomodations comfortable. The food was just average and was somewhat repetitive. The pre-scheduling of shore excursions showed discrimination to us . We selected a veranda cabin and therefore was put at the bottom of the list for selecting shore excursions. Some of the optional tours that we wanted were already sold out (because we were second class)! One included tour was already sold out. We finally did get this included tour after standing in line on the first day of arrival. This was uncalled for, as we had already paid for this included tour! We were very disappointed in Viking, as we have traveled before with them on river cruises.

Baltic Cruise aboard the Viking Sky

The Viking Sky had the right amount of people on board. It wasn't too big and the crew were very helpful. During our mix and mingle the first day they provided a private room with food and drink for everyone. They also introduced us to senior members of the crew welcoming us on board. Viking does not "nickel and dime" its guests. All inclusive. Good company.

Quiet luxury

A convenient itinerary. Easy (5 minute) check in and boarding procedures. Very comfortable cabin (stateroom). Good meals everywhere. Some 'stumbles' with service in the main dining room. Perhaps the servers should attend to people more than their hand held devices. Good entertainment staff with some excellent music. Included land tours were OK but this was not a trip for land packages -- more a luxury hotel that moves from place to place. The final port of call was NOT visited. We received a refund for that deficiency. But it appears this was not the first time a technical problem caused Sky to miss that port. A vacation that we wanted at a reasonable cost with good food, good company and good weather. What's not to like?

The VIKING SKY is a great ship, very handsome, well made but the ship's fuel was contaminated which resulted in the ship cancelling the final, most important excursion. Crew is outstanding,, food great, lots of stuff to do on the ship. .very comfortable stateroom/cabin .. ship store of "ship stuff,, Norway stuff" has limited inventory and the cruise line's website doesn't have a "mail order store"... Ship historians very good.. had a variety of comments that I left on the ship's evaluation form on various aspects of the cruise. Was unhappy with the no live cable tv capability, but ship's WIFI very good.. laundry machines' controls too complicated for me the middle-aged bachelor.. highly recommend future passengers pay for the "Silver Package" liquor service.. got to visit the bridge to see the ship controls.. I was a United States Navy contractor responsible for training navigation and communication gear.. unfortunately,, the fuel problem ruined the final excursion to see ruins
