Le Champlain - Exceptional Trans-Atlantic

By: Perry

Le Champlain is a beautiful, small, expedition ship. We sailed on her from Cayenne to Lisbon-had a wonderful time! Only 43 guests on this voyage and 120 crew-the 11 day crossing felt like a party on your best friend's large yacht. Nationalities of the guests: 5 Americans; 5 Australians; 2 Canadians; 4 from the UK; 1 German; and the rest French. All were well-traveled and everyone mixed well. Language was not an issue - the crew all spoke English and French-with our taxi/restaurant French, we managed to communicate well enough with our French friends. We had a base-level suite on deck 3. Well appointed, but a tad snug-they are significantly smaller than on other lines. We did not find this to be an issue. Food in our opinion was very good and we had a number of exceptional dishes. Service was good throughout the ship - best in the restaurant and suite. Open bar offerings sufficient-no need to up purchase anything. Limited entertainment. Booked another, we liked it so much!

Small ship delight

The food and service was extraordinary. The wines offered good and paired well with the food. The cabins are a little small (we were in a Prestige), but they are clean and have adequate storage space. The most wonderful thing about this ship, other than the food and service, was timeliness. No waiting around. For tours, if you arrive on time, you leave on time. The tours were informative and did not disappoint. This is definitely a line I will cruise again.

Lovely ship and nice itinerary

Ponant has lovely ships, and the itinerary was really nice. Their shore excursions were excellent, and they ensured that those of us on board who were English speakers had our own English-speaking guides when on tour. The staterooms are lovely as well as the public spaces. The staff on this ship were friendly and helpful. And the small size of the ship is great!

Mayan Adventure

Great ship but limited space for sun bathing if that is your goal. Enjoyable meals, lively and fun entertainment (they moved one of the shows to main lounge instead of theater bringing you up close a personal - great idea), cruise itinerary strictly for Mayanofiles. Passengers are overwhelmingly French so better for English speakers to travel in a group rather than as just a couple. Limited opportunities to meet with other English speakers but they made the attempt at scheduling some.

Elegant ship

When you step onto the ship, you know you are in for a special experience. The ship is elegant and never felt cramped or crowded. In fact, it was noticeable that the ship felt the very opposite of crowded. The entire crew was great. The food and wines were lovely.
