A great experience

A brand new beautiful ship, a super friendly crew, great food and wonderful places to see.....how can one go wrong! Our only disappointment was that there is no dance floor or band, for those of us, who would like to do some ballroom dancing (Fox, Waltz Rumba, ChaCha etc.). BB King Blues band was good, but too loud and they played almost every night; their venue had the only dance floor on the ship. All one could dance to their music was 'disco'.

If you like a large, new ship with a very helpful staff this might for you. Beware though of their smoking policy! Smoking is permitted on all of the verandas. We were disappointed to not be able to use our veranda as result. There was fine array of entertainment. Also offerings of other pricy activities on the ship. The hiking and biking tours were exceptionally enjoyable. We loved the Crab Safari . Fine quality of the food and the service was at all of the eateries on the ship. In the dining room the service staff was worthy of a five star rating. On sea days the Lido Grille was very crowded making breakfast and lunch a challenge. We used room service to counteract this situation. This shipappeals to an older smoking crowd, who generally come from Northern Europe. Different languages are spoken but English is most common. The spa has very talented technicians to pamper guests but beware, they will try to sell you everything in the spa. The laundry and cabin service were great !

The ship layout and offerings are somewhat different in comparison to other HAL ships. Some of the 'old world' charm is gone as is the individual service offered to Neptune Suite customers. The ship is beautiful and crew is awesome. I think the parent company is focusing too much on revenue at a cost to the customer.

Loved the bathroom, great design, good water pressure and temperatures. The staff was amazing too! Beyond first class, it was Grand Class!

I love the new ship and it is gorgeous. In saying this, however, it has room for improvement. I am assuming the negatives I experienced were due to the fact that it was the first sailing out of Ft. Lauderdale and all of the execs were on board, etc. I will give it another sailing and hope to see some changes. The entertainment was mediocre, Lido service needs to be more independent, cruise director needs to be more involved, bring back the pizza station, taco station & good quality free ice cream. The Culinary Arts Center was awesome as was the BB King club.

Koningsdam is a beautiful ship however, the service in the main dining and the Lido deck is deplorable. The "wine stewards" don't have a clue . The meal courses either came one on top of the other or not at all and had to be requested again. The special restaurants were worth the price of admission. My friends and I like to sit outside and have breakfast what a disaster soot was everyplace and no one seemed to care. If this had been my first cruise I would never plan another, fortunately I've experienced wonderful cruises and will do it again but not with Holland America.
too big for us

The Koningsdam is beautiful but I rue the day that economics caused HAL to exceed the 1200 size of ships. The embarkation was a nightmare; because there was a delay in boarding, a large portion of the 2000 passengers were crammed into a room with very few chairs. The average passenger age was well over 70 and waiting was not only uncomfortable but a safety hazard. There were no drinks or snacks and the wait was close to 2 hours. Crowded times (to and from dinner and shows) were difficult to navigate in narrow hallways. The smoke in the casino, where you had no option but to walk through to the theater, was so heavy it hung in the air. Ventilation system must have been totally inadequate. The suites have been truncated and the entire suite offering should be re-examined. Despite the hefty increase between a suite and lower deck cabins, there were few amenities. Boarding was combined with the 90 per cent of passengers who are 4 and 5 Star and thus no privilege.

BIG HAL fans-NOT the 'homey' atmosphere of our 4 previous cruise. No library.Too many missing things. Open Seating does NOT work.Understand the 4-5 star mariners are catered to,but 3 stars are very discriminated against.Request for table size and/or time, was NEVER honored.2 hours + for dinner, stewards carried 1 plate at a time for a table of 8,no silverware to eat dessert,no water refills, couldn't answer questions.Gave up and ate in Lido where staff MUCH happier, friendly, helpful. Office:didn't listen to concerns or offer suggestions.Rude in replies on the phone. Room steward bad-previous people left broken hanger, underware, shoes and none was cleaned out before our arrival. Made one wonder how clean the room actually was? Ship:rooms much smaller-not enough room to be able to wheel luggage to the hallway. How can a 95 yr old lift their bag over a bed to get it out of the room? Journeys Shore:staff cannot answer questions if not on the 'script'.Possibly they should experience some tours.

It was lovely to be aboard the brand new Koningsdam. The Kongingsdam is the largest ship currently in the HAL line. We prefer a smaller ship of about 1200-1400 passengers so found the ship a little large with so many passengers. We would, however, not hesitate to sail on the Koningsdam again.

We enjoyed the cruise. This is HAL's newest, largest ship - there are things we liked and things we did not like. We liked the many dining options - Sel de Mer and Pinnacle Grill were excellent; however, we did not like the Chef's Tasting dinner (what Rick ate is what we think made him sick for two days at the end of the cruise). We like the Dutch Café, New York Pizza and Deli, Gelato, and Dive In. We had to cancel our reservation at Tamarind. The main dining room food was good; however, the food on Lido was not good at all and it seemed like the room service menu options were more limited. Service in all areas -excellent. We did not like the Promenade deck at all. The tenders are so low that you cannot look out at the water as you walk around, no deck chairs and so narrow that you have to walk single file when passing someone. We did not like the design of the BB King lounge in an open space with the music blasting into the shops in the evening. You could not talk with sales staff.

The ship is new and innovative. Very modern accommodations. We particularly liked the World Stage with its LED lights and comfortable seating. We tried the speciality restaurants and enjoyed the Canaletto and Sel de Mer, but still like the Pinnacle Grill the best. We selected a suite on the back of the ship and enjoyed the views but thought it was smaller than on other HAL ships. The Neptune Lounge is a great benefit for suite guests. We chose the itinerary and liked St. Lucia the best with the sail part the Pitons. Food is very good but dining room can be chaotic with traditional and open seating mixed. Great crew and services.

We loved the ship. The specialty restaurants were excellent. The World Stage was amazing as was the Lincoln Center. The Billboard (Piano Bar) layout was very good. The interior staterooms were a little smaller, but had great storage. The glass enclosed shower was great. Crows nest was very nice with lots of comfortable seating. Since there is no library, (as most people have e-readers) they need to let guests know that there is a book exchange location. Outside decks have lots of lounge chairs that are easy to move to shady spots if desired. As usual, the crew is very friendly and helpful.

This time we were on the Koningsdam for 15 days, sailing through the Med and across the Atlantic Ocean. It's a beautiful ship with lots of things to do and enjoy. The food all around, was wonderful. The Lido Deck, Main Dining Room, Tamarind, Pinnacle Grill...any of the restaurants are great, including room service. We attended cooking shows and a class, high tea, World Stage shows, a cooking class, experienced the spa with a massage and facial.... it was great! Our room stewards were wonderful and attentive, the front desk crew outstanding to cater to every need. There are a couple of negatives, which # 1 is the BB King Blues Club; their repertoire is very limited and gets boring fast and # 2 the Billboard 100 needs a dance floor, since the dancing possibilities to BB King is limited. We were also missing dance lessons (ballroom). Having said all this, we have already booked a cruise to the Caribbean in February on the Koningsdam.

We enjoyed our cruise. The ship is beautiful. Loved the Lincoln Center quintet. The stage shows were downright awful this time, although the dancers in the production number were talented - the female singer couldn't carry a tune and screeched in her mike. The trumpet player/singer was abominable at both parts of her repertoire. Food was excellent. We especially liked the Tamarind and Pinnacle. The Dutch cafe on board was a treat. The Koningsdam is a very beautiful ship . It has all the features that make it very cruiser friendly. The staff are very friendly and courteous and almost always greet passengers as they pass. The Show Room is adequate for the number of people on board. The quality of the shows was excellent by and large. We enjoyed the service in the Lido which was differrent to other HAL ships that we have travelled on. The concept of stewards serving drinks and food helps with the usual congestion at the coffee machines and food bar. One disadvantage to us was the fact that the Promenade deck (Deck 3) does not have facilities for people to sit out in a less noisy atmosphere than on Deck 9. Another disadvantage to us was the inability to have a fixed meal time with the same dining room stewards in attendance. In all, an excellent choice for anyone going on a short cruise.

I have 2 answers, the ship is wonderful, the food was great, help is top notch, nice ports, but most cruise lines have nice ships, great food and wonderful help. Where this ship really falls down on is music. If you like to dance, there is only one place to dance, BB Kings, no other options. Most other ships have other bands playing or a DJ, this particular band playing in BB Kings, played way too much concert music. My definition of concert music is you sit in your chair listening to the music because so much of it is not dancable. They would play one good dance song and everyone would dance, then they would play 3-5 songs that were concert music and people would sit and listen to it. I know people complained but nothing was done, so that is where this ship falls down and why I would never recommend this ship. If you don't like dancing this would be a good ship for you.

Third time on the Koningsdam

This was our third trip on the Koningsdam and we really enjoyed it. Life in a Neptune suite was sweet. The service on the ship is wonderful, the food consistently good (it could be hotter on the Lido deck), the specialty restaurants great, there are classes and seminars, classical music concerts, shopping, etc. The crew is very personable. My only complaint is the BB King Blues Club; the are extremely loud and have a very limited repertoire, so they get boring very quickly. It is also not music one can dance even a swing or Foxtrot to. Especially on this cruise it showed, with people flocking to the Billboard 100 were there is not enough seating. People walk in the swinging to the tunes, but no dance floor. Other, than this, we really like the Koningsdam, especially the sea days.

The Koningsdam is a beautifully designed ship. She is easy to get around, and although a larger ship, I never felt there were crowds. We sailed on her 14 day Norwegian Fjords Cruise to the north cape. A beautiful trip! The music walk is a very popular area full of exceedingly talented musicians. The Lido offers a temptingly wonderful array of selections. Waiters constantly walk up and down offering refills of water, iced tea juice and coffee. There is no self service of most foods as an infection control measure. The main dining room is beautiful but very noisy. We did anytime dining and were always speedily seated. We eventually asked to share tables no larger than six so that we could more readily converse with other diners. The main show lounge is a technical marvel and the BBC Earth presentation is not to be missed. Disembarkation from the ship for tours, tenders and final day is handled in an efficient manner. Strongly recommend this cruise and this ship.

Our review of the Koningsdam is mixed. We loved the itinerary. It is a great mix of scenery and small cities. We also loved that there were many days of scenic cruises in the fjords and along coastal waterways. The larger size of the Koningsdam allows for more entertainment and dining venues, but the dining room was extremely noisy. Also, the distances were much greater than other ships. It took a long time to walk from one end of the ship to the other. The noise levels in all the entertainment venues, except for Lincoln Center Stage, were way too high. Typical of other HAL cruises, the service and food were top notch.

The board process in Amsterdam was not smooth, but I don't know if the port or the cruise line was primarily responsible. Once aboard the ship was very nice, only a couple of years old. Stewards were friendly and attentive. Dining room staff was accommodating, considering we did open seating and had different waiters almost every evening. The itinerary sold us on the cruise, with three ports in Iceland. the debarkation went smoothly and porters and cabs were plentiful. The Amsterdam airport which was easily navigated when we arrived, was chaotic upon our returning home, but maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety.
