About Us

Nestled in Manhattan’s Upper East Side at 76th Street and Madison, The Surrey hotel is both a familiar destination and an unexpected delight. Reinvented with a fresh approach to traditional luxury, the Beaux-Arts design hotel is reflective of its Upper East Side neighborhood and evokes the ambiance of a residential townhouse that has evolved over time. Whether you prefer entertaining in the private roof garden, indulging in a relaxing massage at the Spa, or dining at your favorite table at Café Boulud, personality and guest preferences inform our service. Explore the art galleries, upscale boutiques and restaurants on famed Madison Avenue or the natural beauty of Central Park on our doorstep.

Our accommodations consist of 189 Salons and Suites, some with private terraces, fireplaces and small kitchens. Each guest salon and suite features extraordinary creature comforts such as Duxiana beds, custom Sferra bedding, Pratesi towels and robes, Laura Tonatto bath amenities, Waterworks bathroom fixtures and Carerra Italian marble. The Surrey is ideal for families and extended stay accommodations.

Inspired by Chef Daniel Boulud’s unique twist on time-honored French cuisine, Café Boulud celebrates New York’s café society with award-winning results. The restaurant’s accolades include a star in the Michelin Guide and a 3-star review in The New York Times. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant’s menu reflects Boulud’s four culinary muses: classic French cuisine, seasonal delicacies, the vegetable garden, and the flavor of world cuisines.

Named for the beloved French restaurant frequented by Manhattan’s art world elite of the 1970s and 80s, Bar Pleiades combines the elegantly attentive service of a fine hotel bar with the distinctive cocktail menu of a talented mixologist. The bar and lounge décor – inspired by fashion icon Coco Chanel, features inviting seating areas set in intimate niches.

Perched peacefully on the 17th floor overlooking the Upper East Side and Central Park, the seasonal private rooftop garden at The Surrey is a true oasis. A tranquil, elegant setting for relaxing, a romantic evening or for business entertaining, the seasonal garden features light food by Café Boulud and numerous signature cocktails including our freshly muddled lemonade with your choice of fresh fruit and herbs.

The Spa at The Surrey is an intimate haven with five treatment rooms featuring private showers in each treatment room, including two Spa Suites, one featuring a soaking tub. Customized treatments are our signature, with a full array of options including massage therapy, facials, manicures, and pedicures. As the flagship spa of Darphin Paris, the Spa features Darphin products along with Lit'ya of Australia. Located on the second floor, our 24-hour Fitness Center, is a fully equipped with state-of-the-art Life Fitness® cardio machines with individual video screens and headsets for a more private workout experience.

Best of the Best

An intimate address on the Upper East Side, The Surrey began as a townhouse for 1920s stars and is now the preferred hideaway of today’s elite. Its location offers access to top fashion houses, restaurants, art institutions, and iconic landmarks. Recognized as one of the best hotels in New York City by both Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler, The Surrey is the city’s only Relais & Châteaux hotel. Enjoy the Michelin-starred Café Boulud, the atmospheric Bar Pleiades, an amuse-bouche tasting at the Cornelia Spa, and a private roof garden. Its 189 salons and suites accommodate celebrities, style icons, and art aficionados alike.

The Surrey-the Perfect Stay

By: Grandson's Birthday Trip to NYC

Reviewed on: 27 Jun 2018

When I first began researching places to stay in New York, I was overwhelmed by the multiple choices. The Surrey was on my initial list of "possible" hotels, and when my travel advisor recommended it, the choice was made. I couldn't have been happier! My grandson and I arrived "way early", and yet, we were accommodated graciously with a temporary room. After we were all settled in our reserved room, I began to appreciate the ambiance, and how much The Surrey felt like a home. The room and hotel captured an era and history of "days gone by", and yet it had all the modern comforts, such as the Duxiana beds, which were divine! The concierge staff was exemplary, and working with them was very comfortable. They truly made us feel like appreciated guests, and they recognized our unique needs. I was sad to leave, and have already begun planning a "next trip" to The Surrey and New York.

Nice location but some staffs were snooty

We stayed at The Surrey for 4 nights. The location is very good if you like to visit the museums. Also, it is right next to Central Park. The area is quieter and less crowded compared with time square. However, some front desk, bell desk and restaurant staffs were snooty. We stayed at Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental before, we were treated a lot better. Perhaps it is typical for NYC. If people pay more than $550/night, I would think it is ok to expect Four Seasons level of customer services even though this is a boutique hotel. The food at the hotel restaurant was very good. However, we were 5 mins late for the hotel breakfast (until 10:30am) one morning (breakfast was included in our package), we were told to get food somewhere else because lunch will not be available until 11:00am. They did not even try to get us a cup of OJ or a pastry. It was understandable but a bit disappointed that they did not try to find a way to accommodate us.

The Surrey hotel is a lovely hotel in a wonderful location. The rooms were well appointed, location was quiet, but central, and staff was very friendly. The Virtuoso amenities and upgrade upon arrival were a real treat. Hotel bar, Pleiades, was great as well as Cafe Boulud.

This was a fabulous hotel! The staff was very helpful and friendly. The roof top bar is gorgeous and has a fantastic view of the city. Rooms were large for NYC and were very cozy at the same time. We didn’t have a chance to eat in the restaurant, but had a few apps upstairs. I would recommend going out for meals, but it did save us on a night my 8 year old was too tired to go back out for dinner. So close to the park and high end shopping. Great location in a “quiet” area of the upper east side. Would go back again!!!

I’m a big fan of the refined and quiet luxury of the upper east side and the Surrey is the best of the best. The rooms are gorgeous and the rooftop bar is sublime. The Daniel Boulud restaurant downstairs provides first class room service and they serve the most amazing tiny madeleines. The hotel is two blocks from Central Park and super close to Madison Avenue shopping, Bergdorfs, etc. Highly recommend!

This is hard because the location of the Surrey is fantastic! However, we had issues when we checked in. We had a two bedroom suite. Our room was not ready (check-in was over 1.5 hours late), we found trash in our room when we checked in and one of the doors' locks was broken. We discussed all this with the management and they did fix everything. However, it should not have happened to begin with. Also, the bar attached to the hotel was closed 3 of the 4 nights we were there for private parties. So it made it hard to find a cocktail in the evening. But we did love the breakfast at the restaurant in the mornings!

Love the Surrey

We had a very nice stay at The Surrey, which is where we usually stay when in New York City. Our room was spacious and clean and the staff friendly. The restaurant, Cafe Boulud is fantastic with delicious food and wonderful service. Really a treat to eat there. The only criticism of the hotel was that we were there in early March, at the very beginning of the Covid-19 situation, and it took a couple of asks before the fitness room had a supply of Clorox wipes to wipe down the equipment after using.
