About Us

Founded in 1965 by Laurence Rockefeller, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was the most exclusive and expensive resort of its day. Four decades later, the Mauna Kea once again stands as a landmark of luxury on the Big Island’s golden Kohala Coast.

The Mauna Kea’s room inventory was reduced from 310 to 252 as rooms in the south-end of the main building were reconfigured to have more spacious bedrooms and bathrooms. All rooms were redesigned in a style that is contemporary yet evocative of Big Island tradition. In the restaurants, exciting new sights, sounds, scents and sensational tastes elevate the experience of dining. The legendary Mauna Kea Golf course was updated to current USGA standards of play by designer Rees Jones.

Best of the Best

An oceanfront setting of dreams, on a stunning soft-white-sand beach at Kauna’oa Bay. Sophisticated and serene accommodations in one of the most celebrated locations in Hawaii. Renowned and much-lauded classic mid-century-modern architecture. All the amenities expected of a luxury resort, including championship golf, award-winning tennis, flavorful local cuisine, and beach and cultural activities that combine for the ultimate in resort experiences. This is Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, as relevant and impressive today as at its opening in 1965 by visionary Laurance S. Rockefeller. This is our Paradise. Let us welcome you with Aloha.

Hotel Tip

After dinner at Manta, take a stroll to Manta Ray Point and watch the nightly show as graceful manta rays "dance" in the spotlight. Adventure seekers can snorkel with the friendly sea creatures.

Mauna Kea never disappoints

We love going back to the Mauna Kea every year. There is something about this old school hotel that charms us each time. It's the best beach on the Big Island, the long-time staff is friendly, attentive but relaxed. The fairly recently renovated Copper Bar is a great addition--good food, great views. Brunch at the Manta is always a great way to start the day. We'll be back!

You can’t beat the beach or the location. Food and service is always soso but you don’t go to that hotel ...if you want that you go to the four seasons. Always love my stay here
