Hotel del Coronado Update

As of June 21, the Hotel del Coronado’s new restaurant, Serẽa, will be open to guests. Serẽa offers an upscale, sustainable, sea-to-table experience with coastal cuisine that spotlights the best of the region's ocean, as well as farms and fields from California to the Baja Peninsula.

Maintenance work on the roof of the Victorian building will conclude by the end of June. Between June 24, 2019 and mid-October 2019, Hotel del Coronado will relocate utilities near the south parking and east beach boardwalk near Ocean Towers. During this time, some pedestrian access may be limited near the East Paseo boardwalk and areas around the Ocean Towers. Advisors are recommended to book the Victorian Building or Beach Village during this time for best guest experience.

Legendary beachfront resort announces multi-phase renovation

We have begun work to improve and enhance the historic Hotel del Coronado to create even more indelible guest experiences. The Master Plan for the Hotel will unfold in phases, with the goal of ensuring that the resort remains a destination of choice for many years to come. Though we have known about this project for some time, actual start dates and sequencing of the work has been fluid and dictated by a variety of factors beyond our control. In preparation, we have carefully planned each phase of work in such a way that it minimizes guest impact and maximizes the enjoyment of our magnificent property by our most treasured asset, our guests.

Master plan improvements and enhancements to the entire resort will take place in phases from 2019 to 2021 and will include:

  • a new main entry with grand sense of arrival
  • restoration of the historic front porch
  • 142 new guestrooms and refurbishment of 97 California Cabana guestrooms
  • new main pool and upgrades to the Sun Deck casual dining experience
  • a new Event Center with ballroom, break-out meeting space, and Great Lawn outdoor event space
  • re-launch of Vista Walk outdoor event space
  • debut of our new restaurant concept, Serẽa
  • historic preservation and renovations in some back-of-house areas
  • new underground parking structures
  • landscape improvements around the property

At this time, most major areas of the property are open as usual. Underway currently are a number of projects including:

  • an exciting new restaurant called Serea (projected opening this summer)
  • a reimagining of an existing outdoor meeting space called Vista Walk (projected opening late May)
  • an underground parking structure at the north end of the resort
  • renovation of some historic buildings being utilized as back of house space/administrative office space

Improvements will continue in phases, with all work expected to be complete by late 2021.

We’re taking all measures to minimize the impacts of this work on our guest experience. Our other restaurants, beach and recreation are in full swing and we’re looking forward to a great summer

Tourist trap.....awful

After leaving beautiful Santa Monica and arriving at the Del in a 30 minute line for valet and check in I knew something was wrong. Check in was a nightmare because they were having 2 weddings and a Christmas special dinner at the hotel for the night---I couldn't even see the lobby or the tree with the amount of people standing everywhere. Our rooms were in the main Victorian building on the 3rd floor. The rooms were updated but updated to more like a Ramada Inn--reminded me of when I would take my boys on sports trips with their teams. Children running up and down the halls--It was like Disney! I sent my travel agent and email and the manager soon contacted me and upgraded us to the Ocean tower the next day. This was much more quiet, but still not what I would expect from a hotel like this. People everywhere---buses drop off 6 times a day for an hour each for tourists--no room at the bar--and sunset looked like a scene from south beach. I will never return to the Del.

We recently returned from a holiday stay at the Hotel Del Coronado, and we wouldn't hesitate to return for a longer stay in the summertime. Besides the fact that our room had a stunning ocean view, the hotel's breakfast buffet was a highlight of every morning and the daily easy walks along the boardwalk and to the beach were so easy and refreshing. The service was great, the holiday decorations were a treat to behold everyday, and the ice skating was entertaining to the kids. I hope to return when the weather is warmer next time.

Beautiful Historic Hotel

We loved Coronado so much we'd move tomorrow! The Del Coronado is a beautiful hotel on the island with a rich history. Our rooms were generously sized and very well maintained. We had garden view porches off of both rooms which were nice as well. We enjoyed both the beach and the pool at the Del. We especially enjoyed watching the "sand castle man" create his magical sand castles on the beach in front of the Del. The staff are all very friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. We also had great food at Sheerwater and ENO.

What a wonderful vacation we had in the San Diego area. We were based at the Hotel Del and spent 4 nights and 5 days there. The staff were superb, the location was breath-taking and the amenities were awesome. There was something for everyone to do, in our multi-generational group. The Spa was outstanding - one of the best massages I've had. The Hotel Del was most accommodating of our need for a late check-out (red eye flight). They also left us little treats and surprises, as Virtuoso guests. The restaurants were great. Slow service (unavoidable due to volume) at Sheerwater was more than compensated. Thank you for helping us create such wonderful memories.

The Beach Villas at the Coranado were excellent. They were well maintained and very clean with a full kitchen including everything to actually cook if you want to. The only suggestion that I have would be to have more light for reading next to the beds. The concierge service was handy and very accessible at any time that we needed them. We hope to return another time. We were a family of 12 and the hotel kept us all in the same block of rooms which was another positive!

I had long ago visited Hotel del Coronado for an Easter Brunch, and was intrigued with the opportunity of spending time there with my grandsons. I was delighted with every aspect of my stay, from the moment I arrived to the ease of departure. The property is steeped in history and beauty, and yet, the rooms are so comfortable and well-appointed. I felt like I was in my own private villa! In every aspect the staff was helpful, happy and accommodating. The good night treat of a seashell with an appropriate quote captured the understated "magic" of the establishment. When I think of my next visit to San Diego, my thoughts go immediately to another stay at Hotel del Coronado!

The location and amenities are very nice, but the hotel’s organization was subpar. -They gave us a different room without telling us upon check-in. When we got to the room it didn’t have the balcony or ocean view we reserved months in advance. We then had to walk back to the lobby to be put into a small temporary room for the night. -The next day they were to move our luggage to our new room while we were at the zoo. Not only did they forget to do that but they couldn’t locate it. They finally figured it out. - Lost our reservation for our roast (fire pit) on the beach.

Family Vacation

The rooms are sorely in need of updating. The air conditioning was not working as the room temperature was a very warm and muggy 77 degrees. Also despite the large size of room, the bathroom was TINY. There were water stains on the ceiling and peeling wallpaper on the support wall. Not very luxurious and more indicative of poor upkeep. The hotel needs to gut the interior of these rooms and update them to be more luxurious and commensurate with the experience they advertise as well as the prices they charge. We were moved to another room, but it wasn't much better. This hotel is a tourist destination/trap given its historical significance and location. In my estimation perhaps 50% of the people on property are not guests which made for extreme noise and crowding ....and dirty public restrooms. My son had to use the bathroom by B&S bar and a young man was basically taking a bath in the bathroom sink. The floor was wet and littered with paper towels.

We enjoyed staying at such an icon. Just watching all the events that were taking place while we were there was a source of entertainment. We had a nice room opening to the beach which was lovely. My negative comment would be that there were some aspects of the room that struck me as shabby rather than charming such as a hole in the bath mat, a used water bottle under the bed and furniture that was scuffed and worn.

Loved the location with gorgeous views and easy access to the beach as well as the shops and restaurants on Orange Street. The hotel was beautifully decorated for the holidays and we enjoyed the shops. Breakfast was included with our reservation and the buffet was plentiful with many food choices. We were there during a pretty intense rain storm so there were issues with flooding on the property, but they handled that as well as they could. We had a top floor suite in the tower, which was very large and comfortable, though I would say the furnishings were aging.

I was born in Coronado, as was my father and brother. I waited 70 years to actually stay in the hotel. A world class disappointment in all ways. The guest room assigned to us was 3470. Dusty, worn out, bath fixtures barely holding on to sink and shower. The carpet was worn and dirty. The bed was worn into a valley. Despite reputation, history and location this is not a $560 per night property. Not by a long shot. We left the Del after one night of 3 planned. I can never recommend this hotel to anyone.
