About Us

It’s rare, especially in a city as magnetic as Florence, for a hotel to be a destination in itself. Yet marrying Renaissance splendour with contemporary luxury, this former medieval monastery captures the imagination.

Nestled on the verdant Fiesole hills, Belmond Villa San Michele echoes Florence as a whole. Blending 14th century artistic flair with the region’s ethereal beauty, the hotel is as inspiring as the city’s greatest cathedrals and galleries. Our facade, attributed to Michelangelo, is hugged by lush woodland and terraced gardens. From here, visitors enjoy an unparalleled panorama over Florence and the Chianti hills beyond.

Little wonder then that Hollywood elite and British royalty have flocked to us. Julia Roberts, Vivienne Westwood, The Prince of Wales and John F. Kennedy rank among our illustrious former guests. Indeed, Fiesole itself has historically drawn the richest and brightest Florentines. The Medicis built their villas here, and Renaissance artist and Dominican friar Fra Angelico took his vows among these hills. In 1506 Leonardo da Vinci first demonstrated his flying machine from Montececeri Park, a short journey from our front door.

It was about this time that a community of Franciscan monks first laid the foundations for what would later become Belmond Villa San Michele. Today, within its warren of rooms and corridors, vaulted ceilings and worn terracotta floors count among its charming original features. The hotel’s 46 guestrooms and suites—including the private 3-bedroom Limonaia Villa—have a fittingly serene feel with antique furnishings and old master paintings. The villa's former monastic residents may have been surprised to see our Carrara marble bathrooms and modern luxuries, however.

Step outside and relax in our Italian gardens, tinged with the scent of orange blossom and rose. One of our expert gardeners will show you around. Spot our 300-year old wisteria which, come spring, swathes our lawn-facing facade in purple. Take a dip in our pool perched on the hillside or enjoy an al fresco massage, each while taking in breathtaking views of the Arno Valley.

Should you wish to get creative, Belmond Villa San Michele offers a range of activities. Unleash your inner chef at our world-renowned cooking school with executive chef Attilio Di Fabrizio. Alternatively, shake things up at our head barman’s cocktail masterclass.

The elegantly rustic La Loggia restaurant inspires the eyes and palate. Sample seasonal Tuscan dishes at sunset. Watch as the skyline transforms from a tapestry of domes and turrets into a soft sea, punctuated by twinkling lights. Few restaurants and, indeed, few destinations in the world can match this for romantic bliss.

Best of the Best

With a facade designed by Michelangelo, Belmond Villa San Michele is one of the world's most romantic hotels. Surrounded by a wooded park and gardens, its hilltop location affords dramatic views of the city, only 15 minutes away by courtesy shuttle. Swim in the gorgeous pool, the highest in Florence, or take a cooking class at the acclaimed Cookery School. Most guestrooms boast stunning views and a private terrace or gardens. No day is complete without a meal at La Loggia Restaurant, one of the city's finest dining establishments. Little guests can enjoy the Smile Club and fun activities suggested by the dedicated Kids’ Concierge.

Hotel Tip

For the utmost of privacy, choose the Limonaia Villa, the former orangerie of the convent, located in a secluded corner of the lush Italian gardens.

Suite Main Building

Donatello Suite: Once the Prior's quarters, the Donatello Suite occupies the whole corner of the monastery, with windows overlooking Florence and the Arno Valley and the peaceful sight of the Italian Garden and park - a pole position still today. A spacious, sunlit sitting room featuring a corner fireplace of exquisite craftsmanship leads into a large, well-appointed bedroom with king size bed, breakfast table and elbow rest chairs. A 16th-century buffet with drawers is available for clients' clothes.

Michelangelo Suite: Inundated by daylight from sunrise to sunset, the Michelangelo Suite stretches the whole length of the façade. Once the monastery library, it became Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's headquarters in Florence. Today the huge, canopied, king-size bed and the exquisite decorations remain fit for an emperor. By far the Villa's largest and most romantic accommodation, the undivided sleeping and sitting areas stretch behind the whole length of the façade with windows dominating Florence, the Arno Valley and the Chianti Hills. A large fireplace dominates one of the walls, its stone mantelpiece a glory of carved craftsmanship. The bathroom contains a pool-like bathtub, a delight to see and enjoy, and features separate shower and the finest and softest linen and towels.

Limonaia Suite

Unique. The Limonaia Suite is the most dramatic in the hotel. Located in the 17th century 'Limonaia' (the former orangerie of the convent), a separate building in the hotels’ Italian gardens, the suite enjoys a prime location with breathtaking view over Florence and the surrounding hills. This historic apartment can be connected on request to a second suite, linked by a staircase, complete with enlarged bathrooms and wardrobes. Beautifully decorated in Tuscan Renaissance style, the panoramic rooms enjoy breathtaking views over the city. What’s more, the Limonaia’s private garden now has its own heated plunge pool, made from stone, and a small waterfall that blends in perfectly with the leafy surroundings.
