About Us

WELCOME TO MAUNA LANI | THE GATHERING PLACE

Set amidst the dramatic Kohala coast at the base of five majestic mountains, Mauna Lani is a bright jewel. In days past, warrior kings came here to rest and recuperate. Today, the resort’s luxurious bungalows, suites, and gathering spaces set the stage for transformative experiences. Let this potent paradise rejuvenate and nourish you. From your private balcony, watch the sunrise spill gold across the breaking surf. Head down to the Great Lawn where you can lounge with friends or take a few laps across the palm-fringed infinity pool. As you pass through the Hālau, the cultural heart of Mauna Lani, linger long enough to hear Uncle Danny strum his ‘ukulele and tell stories from his youth spent along this historic coastline. At dinner, indulge in a feast prepared with fish caught offshore and ripe produce grown by local farmers. Witness the moonlight glowing on the ancient fishponds. Listen to the drumbeat of the waves and the laughter of loved ones. Discover the meaning of ‘ohana—the Hawaiian word for family.

IMMERSE YOURSELF

Dream of snorkeling above fish-filled reefs or stargazing atop the snow-capped peak of Mauna Kea? Why not drop in on a jam session of Hawai‘i’s most celebrated slack-key guitarists? Just about anything is possible at Mauna Lani, where the passionate team offers unrivaled access to Hawai‘i’s natural and cultural treasures. Start your day with beachside yoga or a peloton ride in the resort’s state-of-the-art gym. Wind up at Mauna Lani’s top-ranked golf courses, then wind down at the signature spa. Hike to an ancient petroglyph site after playing a few rounds of kōnane (Hawaiian checkers) at the Hale ‘I‘ike Cultural Center. Help measure young honu (sea turtles) before releasing them back into the sea—you can’t help but fall in love. The Holoholo Kids Crew invites the resort’s youngest guests on epic explorations of the coast, gardens, and star-speckled night skies.

GET STOKED

Inspired by Hawai‘i’s iconic surf dens of the past, the Surf Shack is the ultimate toes-in-the-sand, good-vibes hang out. Come here to fuel up on acai bowls or fish tacos and to “talk story” with Hawai‘i’s legendary watermen and women. At this headquarters for all things salty and sun-kissed you can launch your next brag-worthy adventure. Ready to paddle a Hawaiian canoe? Hone your free-diving skills? Whether you want to plunge into the sea’s jeweled depths or blissfully float on the sparkling surface, the world-class Kainalu sports pros will give you the gear and expert guidance to make it happen. Relax and expand your horizon. Soak up that sweet vitamin D. Leave with two of the best souvenirs: a golden glow and sand between your toes.

Best of the Best

Offering curated experiences with a distinctive character reminiscent of Authentic Hawaii, our passionate team will guide guests on every ocean pursuit imaginable—from outrigger canoeing, surfing and stand-up paddle boarding, to snorkeling right off the resort’s main beach and nearby Makaiwa Bay. Signature experiences include Twilight at Kalāhuipua‘a, where each month during the full moon, ‘ukulele and guitar players gather on the lanai to talk story and play their favorite tunes on oceanfront lawn at Eva Parker Woods Cottage; and Mālama Honu program which creates awareness of our endangeredsea turtles through the practice of conservation.

Advisor Tip

Turtle Independence Day is celebrated on July 4, when young turtles raised on the property are released into the wild. –Suzette Mack San Jose, California

Love the Mauna Lani

By: VegasJEC

Reviewed on: 10 Apr 2014

This was our second time at the Mauna Lani, and we loved it even more.  Compared to some of the other mega-resorts in the area, the Mauna Lani has a true laid-back Hawaiian feel, and it never gets old.  The staff are always friendly and helpful, and the views from our lanai were beautiful.  It is not a "Disneyland" resort, so if you and your children need to be entertained, then this may not be the hotel for you.  But for those of us just looking to relax amid palm trees and good food, then this is the place.

Relaxing location and great service

By: EdinMinnesota

We've been to the Mauna Lani five times and plan to continue to return. We look forward to starting the day with their wonderful breakfast buffet and then relaxing by the beach where we can read, rest, or enjoy watching the whales in the distance. The staff is uniformly friendly and helpful and always make us feel welcome. When we choose to be more active, we enjoy walks along the beach or hitting tennis balls on their hard surface courts. Mostly, it's simply a great place to relax.

Repeating great memories

By: Dick Bell

Reviewed on: 23 Oct 2017

We have been to the Mauna Lani property at least 15 times. There is such a gentle, welcoming feeling walking into the open air atrium. Edward at the front desk remembered us from our last visit and greeted us warmly. We had a deluxe corner ocean view room which was worth the money. Breakfast at the Bay Terrace always starts things off right and the veteran waitstaff brought smiles to our faces. We like to explore the island when we travel, even though we have seen most of the highlights, and the Mauna Lani location is perfect. Very easy access to beautiful drives, shopping, great food, etc. Of course, the Canoe House is always a special dinner and this year we thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Napua, as well. Friends we have referred to Mauna Lani thank us all the time. Now we start saving to return next year.

A great hotel in the perfect place

By: Susan

Reviewed on: 26 Nov 2017

We spent 12 nights in a deluxe ocean front room and loved it. Our room was comfortable, the staff accommodating and pleasant. We heard the hotel has been sold and some changes will be made and we hope that includes a room refresh which is needed. The only negative for us is the lack of a casual outdoor restaurant that serves dinner. The property has 2 outstanding ocean front dinner restaurants but when a casual salad or burger appeals, that option closes at 6pm. Mauna Lani is our favorite Hawaii hotel because it maintains a high level of "sense of place". It is clear that one is in Hawaii from the open air design of the hotel to the well-maintained ancient Hawaiian fish ponds on the grounds, to the nightly Hawaiian music and hula dancer in the lobby to "Turtle Independence Day". Other properties might be more luxurious but they could be any place. Mauna Lani just oozes island charm and authenticity.

A relaxing vacation based on outstanding service

By: Maded

Reviewed on: 01 Feb 2018

We continue to return to the Mauna Lani Hotel for several reasons. However, the primary one (outside of the location) is the outstanding personal service from everyone on the staff. In addition, the resort is large enough that, if we want some time to ourselves without hearing what our neighbors are saying, we can easily find a suitable plus. Finally, there are many details that enhance the visit and that the hotel continues each year.
