About Us

Set within easy reach of the Indian Ocean coastline and the famous iSimangaliso / Greater St Lucia Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal, andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is known for its abundant wildlife, diversity of habitats and wide range of safari activities. Thanks to its coastal rainfall pattern, andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve enjoys a lush green environment that contains seven distinct ecosystems. andBeyond Phinda is often referred to as ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder.’ This fascinating variety of landscape and vegetation shelters an abundance of wildlife, including not only the Big Five but many rarer and less easily spotted species, such as the elusive cheetah or the scarce black rhino.

Phinda Forest Lodge

16 raised glass-encased chalets have a bedroom, lounge and spacious en suite bathroom with a bath and separate shower. Outside, wooden decks have been erected around the growing trees. Constructed to minimise impact on the unique Sand Forest, the air-conditioned rooms are raised off the ground to allow smaller animals complete freedom of movement along the forest floor below.

Phinda Mountain Lodge

Phinda Mountain Lodge features three room types, with 16 suites, six cottages (that can be turned into three adjoining family cottages), and one family suite. Natural light streams through the expansive glass windows of the suites and cottages, while private decks provide breathtaking views of natural beauty. Each accommodation option features an outdoor shower, well-stocked personal bars and private plunge pools.

Phinda Rock Lodge

Six suites, each with a large bedroom and an en suite bathroom with bath and shower. Each suite, suspended from the edge of the rocky cliff, has its own private lounge, deck and plunge pool, all offering unrivalled views. Three suites have both indoor and outdoor showers.Overlooking scenic Leopard Rock, the lodge';s rough-hewn sandstone and adobe walls and ochre-packed roofs cling to the rock face.

Phinda Vlei Lodge

Six suites, crafted from local materials of thatch, teak and glass, are suspended above the Sand Forest floor. The air-conditioned suites overlook a natural vlei system. The airy double bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with a bath and shower. You can enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner on your outdoor viewing deck or cool down in your private plunge pool. Each of the four lodges has an indoor and outdoor guest dining area.

Phinda Homestead

Phinda Homestead is an elegant and homely sole-use villa, ideal for both families and small groups. Four private bedrooms and spacious bathrooms fuse harmoniously with the cool, expansive, and inviting guest spaces. An interactive kitchen brings the lodge’s private chef into the centre of the guest experience. Game drive times, as well as meals, are tailored completely to the guests’ preference to create a fully personalised safari.

Best of the Best

An abundance of wildlife is sheltered at andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, including the "big five" (lions, leopards, black and white rhinos, and buffalo) and the elusive cheetah. Guests at any of the six luxury lodges enjoy expert-led game drives and bush walks. Many adventures and specialist safaris can be arranged, and include activities like black rhino tracking on foot. Phinda’s commitment to sustainable, responsible travel and community empowerment is world-renowned, and the reserve is deeply committed to andBeyond’s core ethic of “Care of the Land. Care of the Wildlife. Care of the People.”

Health & Safety

Beyond the lockdown, lies adventure in a safe haven

Going above and beyond, it’s what you and your guests have come to know and expect from us.

Delivering the extraordinary, by offering a tailor-made adventure that often pre-empts your guests’ wants and needs, is part and parcel of our DNA. And it goes without saying that we endeavour to uphold this, even during the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19.

Our lodges

The welfare of our guests, our staff and surrounding communities remains our top priority. We’ve implemented the required safety protocols while ensuring an extraordinary stay.

Guests will have access to protective gear to keep them safe, such as a mask, hand sanitiser, and gloves; should they choose to use them. The safety of our guests and staff is paramount.

When it comes to our health and wellness facilities, strict protocols have been implemented i.e. time slots will need to be booked for our fitness areas to ensure physical distancing and time to sanitise equipment in between. Massages will be permitted at our treatment centres (under strict conditions) as well as offered in-room. Pool areas will be checked and sanitised twice a day and guests will have access to a disinfection spray.

Guests will have access to protective gear to keep them safe, such as a mask, hand sanitiser, and gloves; should they choose to use them. The safety of our guests and staff is paramount.

Dining experience

Dining will still be a delectable and show-stopping affair but more intimate and thoroughly thought out in terms of sanitation practices.

We anticipate that our guests will request more in-room dining opportunities. Given that most of our in-room dining venues are outside, on a veranda or balcony of the guest room, we will continue to provide a full room service offering, combined with a dedicated butler. All good hygiene practices and disinfecting procedures will take place.

We will not be closing off or eliminating any public spaces in our camps and lodges. In contrast, where possible, we will increase the size of these public areas by taking advantage of their setting.

We will continue to offer multiple dining options at all lodges, which will help us to ensure that the correct physical distancing measures are in place. These will include outdoor dining venues, private room dining, terraces, gardens, settings around our swimming pools and other secluded places at our lodges.

When buffets are served, they will follow the same strict guidelines, and will be served by a butler or chef. Our butler service has always been attentive but unobtrusive. Butlers will only wear protective equipment, if regulated by government laws.

The strictest food preparation protocols have always been practised in our kitchens. However, we have made sure that no sanitisation rules have been missed in our COVID-ready implementations.

Safaris and other activities

The very nature of game drives being held outdoors (as with most of our other lodge activities) means that they are considered “safe”. This doesn’t mean we aren’t taking all the expected precautions.

All vehicles will be sanitised, and a maximum of six guests will be allowed in our safari vehicles. Each room will receive their own Adventure Kit, which includes a Guides’ Journal and lodge fold-out map as well as a pair of Swarovski binoculars (specific to African safari lodges only and sanitised on check-out).

Refreshments served during activities (at stops and along the way) will follow the same food preparation guidelines at our lodges and strict sanitation procedures will be adhered to.

Our WILDchild activities will still be available, with added sanitation protocols and social distancing.

For our culture and adventure activities, which involve transportation, we have adopted the same protocols as our transfers in the “Getting There” section above.

Guests at &BEYOND lodges will still be able to support the local communities by making a donation to community and conservation projects supported by &BEYOND or by buying locally produced crafts online.

Caring for those who care for you

&BEYOND Life is our internal programme, which focuses on the tenets of Learn, Move and Give. This programme oversees the wellbeing of our staff and extends into the communities surrounding our destinations.

Under the LEARN tenet, our teams have been receiving our COVID-19 protocols training. All lodge teams, transfer hosts, guides, and field staff have been educated (extensively) on what COVID-19 is, how to identify the signs and symptoms of those infected, rules on personal hygiene, interaction with others, luggage handling, and cleaning and sanitation best practises.

Daily temperature checks will also be carried out before staff start working each day. We are also running an internal campaign that has staff watching out for each other.

Should anyone, guests or staff, show symptoms of COVID-19; we have a separate set of interventions at hand. &BEYONDers also have access to an online consultation with a medical professional, if necessary.

Our staff are eagerly expecting you

Going beyond the expected is what our trade partners and guests have known and come to love about &BEYOND. We promise to uphold this expectation by delivering a safe experience. Our &BEYOND teams are eagerly waiting to welcome guests “home” and showcase the vibrant cultures, spectacular landscapes, and fascinating wildlife of Africa, Asia and South America.

Should you wish, we have an extensive COVID-19 FAQ document, which can be downloaded for your convenience.

From our greater conservation model down to the tiniest details of the activities that take place in our lodges every day, every decision that we make revolves around our core ethic of Care of the Land, Care of the Wildlife and Care of the People.

In the years following our founding in 1991, these values have become an intuitive part of the way that we operate and are an integral element of our guest experience. We believe in taking less and giving more, and we apply this philosophy every day through actions big and small at each of our 29 lodges and 18 offices.

In the context of our business:

CARE OF THE LAND embraces sustainable and efficient use of natural resources with the aim of minimising our physical footprint and the impact that our operations have on land and ocean environments.

CARE OF THE WILDLIFE is defined in our conservation strategy and, where possible, active land management to maintain biodiversity. It includes the protection of endangered species, both land and marine.

CARE OF THE PEOPLE, the third pillar of our core ethic, is our community strategy of community empowerment through our localised shared value opportunities, closely supported by our community development partner, Africa Foundation.
