About Us

Since first opening its doors in 1926, the InterContinental New York Barclay has welcomed countless guests to enjoy a luxurious residential-style experience in the heart of the city. Originally constructed as part of the Grand Central Terminal expansion, The Barclay became one of four notable railroad hotels built to service the well-heeled men and women travelling to New York City. Its convenient location, directly above the railroad tracks, permitted the hotel the unique distinction of having its own platform in the basement, ideal for the upscale rail traveler who occasionally arrived by private train car. In addition to its Midtown East location, the hotel made an immediate impact with tenants and critics alike for its characteristic atmosphere of comfort and elegant domesticity. From that moment, The Barclay began to write its history as the hotel of choice for those looking to take respite in this stately residential hotel of international prestige.

Today, the InterContinental New York Barclay remains Manhattan’s preeminent luxury hotel after undergoing the most ambitious restoration in its history. Combining sophistication and contemporary design, while staying true to its original Federalist style details, The Barclay exudes confidence and warmth, delivering the same residential feel with modern comfort and flexibility introduced to the world in 1926.

Best of the Best

A storied history and swoon-worthy redesign has the 702-room InterContinental New York Barclay right on track. Built in 1926 as one of Grand Central’s great railroad hotels (an old platform lies directly underneath), the new version added bold, contemporary touches while keeping its soul squarely rooted in the Jazz Age. Snag a purple-velvet wingback in the clubby Gin Parlour for pre-dinner Negronis before sliding over to a table for sophisticated, sustainable fare. The hotel’s perfectly central location makes for an easy stroll to Rockefeller Center, MoMA and Times Square.

Hotel Tip

Rule Midtown from the new two-bedroom Harold S. Vanderbilt Penthouse, which features its own fitness room, Vanderbilt family photos, and to-die-for views from its 1,300-square-foot private terrace.

NYC Holiday

We had an overall pleasant stay. Location is great. There is a separate registration for the Virtuoso guests. The lounge was pleasant- the breakfast ample. They even had some gluten free options, which was important as my husband has gluten allergy. The lounge staff quite accommodating. The hotel rooms were large by NYC standards. I would have preferred a larger bathroom- but it was adequate for the 3 nights. The concierge staff were almost all wonderful. There was one young lady who was quite rude though- which I have never experienced in a concierge. It was a busy time of year the hotel was very busy. We very much liked having the privacy offered to escape to the lounge, we would certainly return at a warmer time of year!

Wonderful! The club level benefits were outstanding, especially the breakfast and snacks throughout the day. We were traveling with two hungry teenagers, so this benefit was well used! Also, we requested connecting rooms, but it could not be guaranteed. We were pleased to find upon check-in that we were on the 15th floor with connecting rooms. It made our stay so much easier! Everyone at the hotel was very pleasant and helpful all week!
