We had a fabulous trip to Hawaii and only have lovely things to say about our experience at the Four Seasons Hualalai! The facilities are beautiful and there is truly something for everyone. Lots of activities and dining options right on property. I was amazed how each restaurant had such a unique offering of food and drink with less overlap than I anticipated. It is so unique how they have developed such a large and green resort amidst the lava rocks. Our room felt very private and yet very close to everything we needed. We enjoyed the quiet adult pool but also spent time by the family pool. We only ventured off property once to go zip lining and otherwise just soaked up the fabulous service and scenery at the resort.

FS Hualalai, best resort in Hawai`i.

By: DrV

Reviewed on: 13 Feb 2016

We had not stayed at the FS Hualalai in about 6-7 years, but it is still an outstanding, although very expensive, resort. We were so happy, that of the 12 days we were there, we only left the resort twice. The spa is still wonderful, with a nice outdoors garden in which to relax after a massage (and co-ed so could spend the time with my wife). The restaurants were the only thing that was not consistent. Most meals were great (an again expensive), but we did have a couple of meals with poor service and/or sub-par food. The steaks at the Hualalai Grill were always delicious, we just had one of 3 meals there with inattentive service. The Beach Tree Restaurant did well with their casual food, but the expensive entrees were not worth it. And Ulu only missed with one entrée and service was off one night. But most of the food was delicious, with the catch of the day or specials often being the best. And the soufflés for dessert and all sushi items were great!

What can I say? You will not be disappointed in any way! From the moment we were greeted with an orchid lei, to the check in process, to our extremely helpful, knowledgeable, friendly bell man to our room (which was an upgrade because of Paul Klein Travel and their association with the Four Seasons) to the entire staff, to each meal, we enjoyed and embraced every moment. We did not leave the property! We enjoyed the view from the adult only pool, as that was right out the door of our upgraded suite (thank you, Paul Klein Travel and John Chaffin). Breakfasts, which were included because of Paul Klein Travel and their association, were amazing. And dinners were outstanding...all at a perfect table to perfectly capture the sunset.

All the hype and praise is justified. Expectations were exceeded across the board. The kids loved the Kids for All Seasons. The most pleasant surprise was the quality and scope of the fitness/wellness facilities and the expertise of the fitness staff. Some standouts were Rita and Jerry. Amazing teachers. The SeaShell Pool was fantastic- big shoutout to Marissa for her warmth and friendliness to the kids. The food is fantastic- Beach Tree was our favourite. The best pork I've ever eaten. We went in low season so there were no crowds- never had to wait for loungers or at any of the restaurants. We have been to FS Maui twice- Hualalai is by far our favourite and we will definitely be back, can't wait!

Our trip to this FS was not our first to this location and will not be our last. I was nervous about the resort being crowded and found upon arrival that I fretted for no reason. It was easy to find chairs for all of us by the pool, the staffing was on point, and the hotel did not seem at all stretched to accommodate everyone. The one time we noticed the business was at dinner. Definitely make your reservations ahead of time or be prepared to eat late, order room service, or go off property. Speaking of other dining spots. Make the jaunt up the hill to Merriman’s in Waimea. I recommend going before dark if possible to see the beauty of paniolo country and possibly rainbows. We stayed in a poolside suite and chose the first floor so we could have an outdoor lava rock shower. Highly recommend you give that a try. I fell in love with it on our honeymoon and have to have it! There really isn’t a “bad” spot on the property. I’ve stayed in different locations and all have been quiet.

Hualalai Four Seasons - resting on its laurels

By: Doc72

Reviewed on: 01 Mar 2018

February 2018 We had enjoyed a number of vacations here in late 90s and early 2000s and looked forward to a return stay. Unfortunately, the rooms have not been refurbished since hotel opened more than 25 years ago and it shows. The rooms are tired and shabby with over-worn, nicked furniture. The rattan frame of couch had dirt embedded in the rattan that could only be remedied by replacement. There is no minibar but rather an old, stained refrigerator. The staff was mostly competent but not uniformly friendly. In any event, at the price point, even excellent staff could not make up for the outdated accomodations. I do not think that most Virtuoso travelers will think this resort meets current luxury standards.

Overpriced: sub par dining, swimming, service

By: N CA Mom

Reviewed on: 03 Jul 2019

This resort will be hugely improved once renovated (happening in 2020). It just can’t compare with places like 4S Lanai in terms of upscale luxury (of rooms and architecture) and should be discounted to reflect this. Unfortunately, the price tag has grown steeper and steeper in the past 5 years. There are also at least a few folks working at the resort that clearly don’t understand the dynamic of the service industry. Given how much guests are paying, no reasonable request should be answered with less than a whole hearted attempt to help. Sadly this was not our experience on this trip. My 18 month old almost lost a foot in a deep mini sand trap like hole in the Seashell Pool. The main pool next to that one is filthy, lukewarm and visibly disgusting. It also has tiles cracking off all over and numerous sharp edges. Lastly, they need to hugely improve the dining experiences at both Beach a tree and Ulu. The best restaurant by far on the property is the Residents Beach House.
