About Us

Exploring the Reserve

Perched at 3,116 ft (900 m) above sea level and surrounded by lower montane rainforest and cloud forest, Mashpi Lodge is home to vast flora: ferns, bromeliads, and orchids, many of these newly-discovered. Approximately 500 species of birds –around 36 of which are endemic– inhabit the Mashpi Reserve. It is also home to monkeys, peccaries, sloths, and even pumas.

Naturalist guides lead explorers on treks to various points of interest: the Life Center, Observation Tower, Sky Bikes, and Dragonfly Gondola; traversing gentle streams, refreshing waterfalls, and exciting terrain along the way. A full day at Mashpi allows for two activities (a.m. and p.m.) plus the chance to take part in a guided night walk.

Guests can enjoy a massage or treatment in the Spa, a delicious signature cocktail at the bar, or a soothing soak in the outdoor hot tub. Meals are included and feature locally-sourced ingredients and plenty of nutritious options for all types of diets.

The Lodge – Modern comfort, where cloud and rainforest meet

Mashpi Lodge has all the comforts of a stylish modern hotel in one of the most fascinating places on Earth! What makes it so special is not only its geographical location (Chocó Bioregion), but also its altitudinal one, where two principal ecosystems (cloud and rainforest) overlap to form one remarkable place.

Built with the latest techniques in sustainable processes, the lodge’s 23 rooms accommodate up to 48 guests. Yaku suites feature one king bed and an open concept that includes a soaking tub and views of the forest canopy. Wayra rooms have one king or two full beds, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep you connected to the forest that surrounds.

The hotel has an outdoor yoga deck and hot tub, a reading lounge, a third floor observation deck, a full-service spa, and a boutique shop that sells hiking gear, local handicrafts, and much more!

Fine Dining in the Forest

The Lodge's towering, two-story dining room offers a dramatic setting. Chefs draw inspiration from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients to create healthy and delicious meals that can accommodate a variety of diets.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. Guests can purchase signature tropical cocktails and natural energetic beverages, plus a full array of fine spirits, craft beers, and South American wines from the full-service bar.

Within Mashpi Reserve, each activity is led by an expert naturalist guide. Excursion groups are small. Guests are provided with rubber boots, hiking poles, day packs, and their own refillable water bottle. Explorers can prepare snack packs for the trek, choosing from an assortment of dried fruits and nuts.

  • Hike along numerous trails, streams, and waterfalls
  • Visit the Hummingbird Garden
  • Visit the Life Center and Butterfly Sanctuary
  • See the canopy up close on one of two Sky Bikes
  • Climb the Observation Tower
  • Observe birds early in the morning
  • Glide along the forest canopy aboard the Dragonfly Gondola

Best of the Best

The strikingly contemporary Mashpi Lodge was designed as the ideal springboard for exploring the vast and biologically diverse world of its 2,500-hectare (6,178-acre) cloud forest reserve, which lies within the Metropolitan District of Quito. Explore the wonders of the forest, in the company of expert guides, aboard the mile-long Dragonfly cable car system, astride a sky bike, from the observation tower, at rivers and waterfalls, or along nature paths. The lodge, hosting 48 guests, is the perfect cocoon to return to after your explorations, thanks to its high standards of comfort, service, spa treatments, and gourmet cuisine.

Health & Safety

  • Employing electrostatic sprayers with hospital-grade disinfectant to sanitize surfaces.
  • Electrostatic spraying technology uses the highest classification of disinfectants recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) to treat known pathogens. The sprayers rapidly clean and disinfect entire areas and can be used in a hotel setting to clean and disinfect guest rooms, lobbies and other public areas.
  • In addition, we are analyzing the use of ultraviolet light technology for sanitizing objects.
  • Disinfection and sanitizing equipment for surfaces.

  • Social distancing of 1.5 meters (5 feet) as much as practically possible at all times.
  • Strict hygiene measures carried out according to our health and safety protocols (wearing of face masks, regular hand-washing, etc.). Disinfection spraying of all areas early in the morning and late evening.
  • Ample hand sanitizing gel dispensers throughout the hotel (both in common guest and staff areas).
  • All staff members are supplied with personal protection equipment for their activities.
  • All guests will be provided with face masks. Their use in public areas and on our excursions will be required.
  • All guests will fill in a health status questionnaire on arrival in Ecuador. This information will be reviewed by the lodge’s paramedic.

  • Stationery/accessories will be removed from rooms to avoid close contact or manipulation. The following items will be handled digitally: Check-in registration forms, welcome notes, additional services information, guest directories, printed menus, spa menus, service accounts, activities information and staying healthy protocols
  • Amenities will include antibacterial gel and alcohol spray so that guests can disinfect personal items.
  • Complete cleaning with ozone machine in rooms and spa.
  • Footwear disinfection areas will be installed.
  • Cloth towels, used when guests arrive at a hotel, will be removed.
  • The capacity of social areas will be reduced by 50%.
  • Spa services at the hotel have been adjusted according to new bio-security protocols.

  • All meals will be served at guests’ tables, with no buffets.
  • Different mealtimes will be implemented, depending on the occupancy of the hotel.
  • Snacks and canapés will be served individually.
  • Welcome drinks will be served in sealed glass bottles.
  • Restaurant areas will be disinfected completely before and after each service.
  • Food hygiene protocols in the restaurant, and food and beverage services, will be reinforced (e.g. dishes served with domes, individual formats).

  • All lodge briefings and talks will be organized over several shifts, depending on occupancy rates.
  • Different areas of the lodge will be assigned for briefings and talks, depending on their capacity and occupancy rates. These will be disinfected before and after each session.
  • Binoculars will no longer be available for shared use during expeditions. We therefore encourage our guests to bring their own pair.

Not a single tree was felled in the construction of Mashpi Lodge and its many installations. This approach is at the heart of Mashpi’s concept of sustainable tourism: to protect and learn from the forest without disturbing its fragile ecosystems.

The Lodge relies on its own water treatment plant. Waste water is filtered and processed before returning to the earth. As a result of their zero plastics policy, environmentally-safe soap and shampoo are provided via dispensers to eliminate packaging. Guests are given refillable water bottles upon arriving at the hotel.

Carbon neutrality and forest expansion are at the heart of efforts to recover and expand key biological corridors, providing numerous species with the means to engage in proper foraging and mating. Mashpi is also home to an important scientific research station. A team of biologists take part in ongoing projects aimed at things like measuring the effects of climate change, discovering new species of flora and fauna, and documenting forest growth.

Mashpi employs members of the local communities as naturalist guides and research assistants, sponsoring their education in subjects like biology, climate science, ecology, and foreign language (English). This translates into greater economic and social stability along with wider participation in the safeguarding of the forest. Mashpi also provides transportation services for local children to attend schools in some of the larger towns within the region.

Worth every penny! We had never felt so pampered in our lives. The views are gorgeous, the food is amazing, and variety of things to do was great! The guides and the staff were so friendly and really made our honeymoon special. From taking us on a special hike to see 2 waterfalls to having a bottle of champagne in the room to congratulate us on the first night they ensured that our stay would be memorable. The Sky Bike was a unique experience and the gondola is also a really cool way to see the cloud forest from the sky. Everyone should visit mainland Ecuador and get up to Mashpi for a couple days!
