You have a choice of activities. One is a walking tour of Old Town and a visit to a local café for a traditional sweets workshop. The family that owns the café has been making treats for the residents of Passau for four generations — and today they'll share some tips with your family. Another choice is to discover Old Town as you play a geocaching game with a local guide. Or go on a guided hike with a holiday theme and interactive storytelling. Enjoy some free time in Passau before returning to your riverboat. It's Christmas Eve, and everything closes early in Europe for family time. As you to sail on to Linz in Austria, your Tauck directors and cruise director have lots of fun activities planned for your family to share onboard ship, including holiday karaoke!

Have lunch at a local restaurant, and then you're off to tour Salzburg, a beautiful city of cobblestone streets, palaces, and a hilltop fortress. Mozart was born in Salzburg, and his family home is still there. The Sound of Music was set in Salzburg, and you might recognize a few locations from the movie. Your family will have free time to explore. Then you're off to reboard your riverboat. Without revealing any secret details, we can say that your evening onboard ship will be... magical.

DAY 4
26 Dec 2019
Dürnstein, Austria
Melk, Austria
Dürnstein, Austria

Early this morning your riverboat sails through Wachau Valley wine country before docking in Dürnstein. Disembark for your choice of shore excursions. One possibility is to visit Melk Abbey, a sprawling Baroque edifice high on a hill overlooking the Danube. Softly golden in the winter light, Melk Abbey is filled with centuries of treasures. It's been a beacon of learning for generations and is still home to a secondary school today. On a guided tour, your family will love imagining going to school in these magnificent surroundings. According to the abbey's Christmas legend, the Virgin Mary and the Christ child made a miraculous visit to the abbey, where a young novice juggled oranges and entertained the infant so much that he clapped for joy and Mary gave the baby to the priest-in-training to hold. Your family's other choice this morning is to go on a walking tour in the charming riverside Old Town of Krems, set against a striking backdrop of terraced vineyards. After lunch onboard your riverboat, enjoy some local wines at a tasting and learn about wine-making in the Wachau Valley. Your riverboat sails for Vienna this afternoon.

DAY 5
27 Dec 2019
Vienna, Austria

Disembark for a sightseeing tour of Vienna, taking in the elegant boulevards, palaces, museums, opera house, and other impressive buildings built during the days when Vienna was the home of emperors who ruled much of Europe. You'll have a firsthand look at the emperors' home life during your guided visit at Schönbrunn Palace, their summer residence, and its gardens. Your family can return to the riverboat for lunch or try a local restaurant or café. This afternoon is free for exploring Vienna as you please. Shuttles between your riverboat and downtown Vienna will run throughout the afternoon. Then it's time to dress up for a Tauck Exclusive evening at Palais Pallavicini, one of Vienna's few private palaces, where you'll enjoy a champagne (or juice) reception, dinner, a performance, and a waltzing lesson!

DAY 6
28 Dec 2019
Vienna, Austria

Continue exploring Vienna today with fun family activities. The catacombs of St. Stephen's Cathedral have nothing to do with combing cats. They're the spooky underground cemetery that you'll visit today, followed by free time. Shuttles between your riverboat and downtown Vienna will run throughout the afternoon. This evening your family heads to the Prater, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, famous for its enormous Ferris wheel, the Riesenrad; parents and grandparents might remember the hair-raising scene when Orson Welles climbed it in the classic film The Third Man!

DAY 7
29 Dec 2019
Bratislava, Slovakia

Your riverboat arrives this morning in Slovakia's capital city, Bratislava. Head to Old Town to try your hand at some medieval games and enjoy an interactive walking tour with a scavenger hunt. Your afternoon is free. This evening onboard your riverboat, Slovak performers entertain your family followed by your captain's farewell cocktail hour and dinner.

DAY 8
30 Dec 2019
Budapest, Hungary

Dock in Budapest this morning and disembark your riverboat for a tour of a city divided by the Danube River. Known for its stunning architecture as "the Pearl of the Danube", Budapest was once two separate cities, Buda and Pest. Your family will go on a walking tour through the castle district and take in the amazing views from Fisherman's Bastion. See elegant Andrássy Avenue, monumental Heroes' Square, and City Park. Your family holiday river cruise ends in Budapest. A transfer is included from the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. Guests should book an afternoon flight home to be able to participate in Budapest sightseeing. Jewish Heritage tour

Our guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel and take you to the World’s second largest and Europe’s largest Synagogue, the Dohany street Synagogue, with seating for 3000. It was built in the middle of the 19th century in Romantic style for the around 30,000 Jewish community of Pest mainly living in this part of the town. The onion domes are strikingly Oriental-Byzantine, as is the facade: the patterns in the brickwork were inspired by ancient ruins in the Middle East. But for all its exoticism, the design also expresses 19th century Hungarian Jews' aspirations toward assimilation. The twin towers evoke church steeples, and the organ inside the synagogue is a clear concession to Christian tradition. It’s gigantic hall rests on cast iron columns and arches - a real architectural novelty at that time. A visit the Jewish Museum in the adjacent building is also included. The museum displays items from the 18th and 19th centuries, from both Hungary and abroad, grouped according to the holiday or occasion on which they were used.

Next to the main building lie the arcades of the Jewish Heroes’ Mausoleum and Temple in memory of the thousands of Jewish martyrs who died during the Second World War and the ghetto, created here by German troops during the war.

We also show our guests the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Garden with our beautiful Holocaust Memorial – the Tree of Life. The monument was created by Imre Varga – a well-known Hungarian contemporary sculptor. Tony Curtis has donated a million Dollars for the construction of the Monument. Our knowledgeable guides explain about the horror of the nazi occupation, the deportations and the liberation of the ghetto.

Your tour will also include a visit to the Rumbach and Kazinczy street orthodox Synagogues.

Danube Bend Tour

Besides history one can enjoy the natural beauty of the Danube Valley where forested hills loom over the river.

On the way out from Budapest you’ll drive through the former capital city of the Roman province – Pannonia. This part of Budapest (Old Buda) has several original Roman ruins incl. two amphitheaters, ruins of the aqueduct (water pipe) system, Roman baths and the largest Roman open-air museum in Hungary.

Esztergom (40 miles from Budapest) with 30,000 inhabitants is situated on the right bank of the Danube. The town is the centre of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary.

People lived on Var-hegy (Castle Hill) in Esztergom even in the stone age. The Romans built a military camp on top of the hill in the 1st century. The Hungarians settled there soon after the conquest and Prince Geza shifted his headquarters to Esztergom. According to tradition Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king was born and crowned there.

The Basilica dominates the whole town. This is the largest church in Hungary located on the site of an old church founded by St Stephen. Construction work went on for decades and the cathedral was finally completed in the late 1860s.

Other interesting places of the town are little houses and museums of Water Town, and Opposite the Castle Hill the St Thomas Hill, named after Thomas Becket, and Baroque houses, churches and statues in the centre, and the river-bank of the Danube.

The bend of the Danube near Visegrád is one of Hungary`s most picturesque sights. Below Esztergom the stream flows through forest-covered hills, curving sharply as the river makes it’s way towards the lowlands.

It is here, 26 miles above Budapest, that Visegrád lies, a town with a rich historic background.

On this spot, 2000 years ago, a Roman fort was built on the borders of the Empire. In the 8th century, Slavs settled down within the walls of the deserted fort, but by the 11th century it was already inhabited by the Magyars. In 1242, the Mongolians invaded the country, leaving the town in ruins. A few years later, by 1258, Visegrád Castle was built, and even today the ruins of the ancient castle dominate the landscape.

Only 19 kilometers away from Budapest, the village of Szentendre is the most obvious day trip out of Budapest. Szentendre was originally settled by Serbian refugees and still retains a South Slav air, not only in the Orthodox churches and Cyrillic-inscribed monuments but also in its Mediterranean townscape. Much of the Serbian population abandoned the city in the 19th century, when it was hit by floods and crop disease.

Szentendre is a town of arts and museums. It gives home to the Hungarian open Air Museum exhibiting the folklore architecture and culture of the Carpathian basin. One of the most visited museums of the whole country, the Kovács Margit Museum, is also located here.

There are further 14 museums and art galleries acquainting visitors with the rich historical past and teeming life of arts. It is not by chance that the quietness of the little town and the closeness of the bustling metropolis of Budapest has drawn over one hundred artists here.
