The lovely coastal city of Stavanger has a rich Viking past and is Norway’s petroleum capital, but its historic city center is intimate, with narrow streets and pedestrian-only open spaces. We will begin with a scenic boat trip through the Gandsfjord, dotted with picturesque islands. We’ll arrive to the private island of Sør Hidle where it’s a short walk to the beautiful Flor and Fjære Garden, where impressive flora come with a backdrop of deep fjords and majestic mountains. We’ll take a guided tour with one of the knowledgeable guides and have some free time to explore, checking out the world’s most northerly plantation of tropical palm trees, bamboo and banana trees, plus fruit trees and multitudes of flowers.

We’ll then enjoy a regional lunch at the garden’s restaurant before returning back to Stavanger for a walking tour through the city center and Old Stavanger, where charming, well preserved 18th and 19th century wooden houses line narrow lanes. The houses were mostly built for seafaring people, craftsmen, or businessmen. From here, we’ll walk to the market square at the head of the harbor bay, where vendors sell seafood, and colorful produce and flowers. Just behind the marketplace lies the impressive cathedral, Stavanger Domkirke, built around 1125.

Shore Excursion - Copenhagen, Denmark

Today your guide will meet on the pier after your ship clears customs for your tour of Copenhagen. Begin your tour with a visit to the harbor fortification known as Kastellet; Copenhagen’s defense citadel from 1663. The next point of interest is the impressive Gefion fountain located next to the English Church of St. Alban.

Also in this area is the Little Mermaid statue, sculpted by Edvard Eriksen in 1913. The statue has become the symbol of Denmark.

Continuing back to the center of town, your guide will point out the residence of the royal family, Amalienborg Palace.

You will also want to spend a bit of time in the beautiful area of Nyhavn, filled with local cafes and restaurants.

Your guide will also take you to the Round Tower. This is Europe’s oldest functioning observatory. The tower was built by King Christian IV in the mid-1600s as part of the Trinity Complex. The tower features a spiral ramp twisting up to the top of the tower reaching over 120 feet. Once at the top, one has unparalleled views of the city in 360 degrees.

Afterwards visit Rosenborg Castle, the fantastic fairy tale summer residence that Christian IV built from 1603-1634, and that today holds the famous crown jewels. Your guide will take you through the castle and the Treasury. Even today, Denmark’s royalty visit the Treasury to select jewelry to wear for formal events.

The castle is surrounding by the King’s garden, designed just as it was during Christian IV’s reign. Here you will find locals enjoying the park.

In the pursuit of Hygge & Happiness in Copenhagen

Hygge is as Danish as pork roast and it goes far in illuminating the Danish soul. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. There's nothing more hygge than sitting around a table, discussing the big and small things in life. Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are the happiest people in the world?

In the summertime, hygge is spending time in the sun, over a beer at the pier, a picnic in one of the parks or just hanging out with good friends in one of Copenhagens many picturesque and historical back yards.

This 4 hour walking tour will show you what hygge is all about.

Meet your guide at the hotel to start a 4 hour tour of hygge. We will start the tour exploring the Latin quarters around the pedestrian street Strøget.

The Latin Quarter is one of the most entertaining areas of Denmark's capital city. It is a young-spirited place, as the campus of Copenhagen University is located here. The Latin Quarter is well known for its hang-out spots, alternative shopping and 17th-century architecture.

Part of Danish hygge is having coffee with friends, so we will pickup a cup of coffee to go and a cinnamon roll at Sankt Peders Bakery, Copenhagen oldest, founded in 1652.

We continue our tour in the Latin quarters visiting the church of our Lady. It’s situated close to the University of Copenhagen. The Church of Our Lady is one of the popular churches in the city. This cathedral was constructed in neo-classical style in 1829 by the famous architect Christian Frederik Hansen.

Walking up to The Round tower, we will peak in to some of Copenhagen cozy court yards, where the inhabitants have their hideaway from the bustling city, with flowerpots, benches and tables for nice gettogethers with neighbors and friends or a quiet corner to wind down with a good book.

The 17th century tower and observatory Runde taarn, or the round tower, is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. When Christian IV built the tower, Denmark was quite famous for its astronomical achievements thanks to the astronomer Tycho Brahe. When he died in 1601, the King wished to continue Brahe's research, and thus the round tower came into being. From the top, you have great views of Copenhagen and the Latin quarters.

Food is a big part of the Danish soul. When Danes meet over a good meal, they often talk about another good meal had in the past or one they will have in the future.

In the summertime one of the most popular outdoor meeting places in Copenhagen, is the Kings garden (Kongens Have). Here people meet on the green lawns enjoying a beer, an ice cream, a coffee or a picnic. Since Hygge also is meeting with friends over nice food we have arranged for a picnic in the park with some Danish comfort food and a classic Carlsberg beer.

The tour will end in Nyhavn from where you can take a tour of the Canals or just sit in the sun and enjoy another beer before walking back to your hotel along the pedestrian street.

Private Tour Of Copenhagen With Guide
Beginning with a pickup at the cruise pier or hotel, your private driver and licensed guide will take you to the oldest and most charming parts of the city, as well as some of the newer ones.

You'll drive past the docks at Nyhavn, where sailors celebrated in days gone by. It is now a lovely part of the city with gourmet cafes and bars.

There's a stop to see the impressive Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish Royal Family and the beautiful monument to Princess Marie of Orléans.

Continuing on, we'll reach Amalienborg Castle, the prime residence of the Danish Royal family. Here, four identical palaces surround the octagon square, one of the most beautiful in Europe. The district of Amalienborg is all about royalty and the pomp and ceremony that goes with it.

We'll take an in-depth look at Rosenborg Castle, one of the many built by the "Architect King" Christian IV in 1617. This pearl of a renaissance castle was built as the King's country house. Today, Rosenborg Castle is a Royal museum and the setting for the Royal collections, including the crown jewels, which are protected by the Royal Guard. You'll glimpse the charmed life of the royals at this three-story, turreted, Dutch Renaissance-style castle.

Copenhagen's public art is a signature of the city with perhaps the most famous of its statues being The Little Mermaid, from the beloved book of the same name, written by famous Dane, Hans Christensen Anderson. The imposing Gefion Fountain is a site to behold. A base of large scale animals are driven from above by the Norse Goddess Gefion. Throw a coin in the fountain and make a wish!

En route to the modern architectural wonder that is the Copenhagen Opera House we'll pass the Marble Church, known for its rococo architecture and the sleek Royal Danish Playhouse. We'll visit Kings New Square, the largest and most important square in the city. Located at the end of a pedestrian mall, you'll enjoy strolling its charming cobblestone streets.

Art & Castle Tour

Meet your driver and guide in the lobby of your hotel and enjoy a beautiful ride along the shoreline, facing the strait between Denmark and Sweden, heading north of Copenhagen.

Visit Kronborg Castle and experience the most famous and impressive castle in Danish history. Kronborg Castle has been the residence of the royal family but is perhaps more famously known as "Hamlet's Castle," since it became Shakespeare's inspiration for the palace in Hamlet, Elsinore Castle (anglicized from the surrounding town of Helsingør) and the setting for the famous tragedy involving the melancholy Dane, Ophelia, Gertrude, Claudius and an even more known soliloquy "To be, or not to be..."

Lunch at Restaurant Sletten (at your own expense). Surrounded by fishermen’s cottages and directly overlooking the harbor and the sea, the restaurant oozes charm and nostalgia. The restaurant is owned by the culinary duo behind Michelin-star restaurant formel B in Copenhagen. Both restaurants share their philosophy and concept, where all dishes on the a la carte menu are made with the finest ingredients and served in “smaller” portions.

After a delicious lunch, continue on to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, in northern Zealand, a 45-minute drive from Copenhagen. With a panoramic view across the sound, Louisiana is an international museum with a considerable collection of modern art. The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 3,000 works by artists including Picasso, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Rauschenberg, Henry Moore, Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, Morris Louis, Jorn, Baselitz, Polke, Kiefer, and Per Kirkeby. It is the largest modern art collection in Scandinavia and takes its point of departure in the period after 1945.

In The Footsteps of the Vikings

Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel to immerse you in an historic Viking experience. A short drive (just 19 miles west of Copenhagen on the island of Zealand) takes you to the Viking Ship Museum, on a Viking Ship sail, Roskilde Cathedral and the Land of Legends.

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is focused on ships, seafaring and boat-building culture in both ancient and medieval times. The museum's Ship Hall is designed as a large showcase to display the five Viking ships found at Skuldelev. Besides the five original ships the hall also houses special temporary exhibitions in the West Room. In the East Room at the 'Harbor bridge' are reconstructed two-storey models of a trading vessel and a war ship equipped with weapons as an active part of the exhibition.

Viking ship sail. Experience 1000-year-old Viking ships and then go directly out to the museum harbour, where the full-scale reconstructed Viking ships lie moored at the quayside. Sail out on the Roskilde fjord on a 1-hour group tour and take part in sailing the ship with up to 12 others. A private boat is also an option for an extra fee.

Visit to the Roskilde Cathedral. A UNESCO-listed world heritage site, Roskilde Cathedral is a unique and beautiful medieval building and the first brick Gothic cathedral in Scandinavia. The Viking kings Harold Bluetooth (d. 985) and his son, Sweyn Forkbeard (d. 1014) conqueror of England is buried here. Almost 40 kings and queens of Denmark til the present time are buried here.

Lunch. Enjoy lunch at Restaurant Rådhuskælderen, adjacent to the Cathedral. (Lunch is at your own cost)

Viking Village Sagnlandet Lejre (Land of Legends). After lunch, we visit this unique 'experiment' involving the reconstruction of houses and agricultural implements from the Iron Age and testing them in practice. People flocked to the Centre to watch the researchers’ efforts as they literally plowed and chopped new knowledge about our ancestors’ daily life out of fields and timber. This outdoor archaeological museum now also comprises a Viking market place (900 AD), a Stone Age camp-site (5000 BC), an 18th-century farmstead.

Your tour concludes on your return to Copenhagen.
