Discover why South Australia’s capital consistently ranks as one of the world’s most livable cities. We’ll begin with a drive down the wide, leafy streets, taking in architectural sites ranging from Victorian to ultra-modern. Some of the most striking landmarks we’ll see include the sprawling Government House, the Greek-Revival Parliament House, and the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. Stop for a morning tea in the historic dining room of St Mark’s College, also home to a beautiful rose garden, and see the restored Senior Common Room, where meetings to draft Australia’s constitution were once held. We’ll next travel to Carrick Hill, an Elizabethan-style manor house set on 98 acres of manicured gardens and native bushland. It is one of the few period homes in Australia to survive with its original furnishings and grounds intact, and today boasts one of the finest private art collections in the country. Take a private tour of the property and galleries, and finish with an elegant lunch.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: This tour requires little walking over flat surfaces. Travelers must be able to ascend and descend the steps of the coach unassisted.

Location: Melbourne, Australia
Length: 11 Hours
Meals: Unknown
Recommended Ages:
Activity Level:
Experience(s): None Specified
Private: Discover The Great Ocean Road
Along the southwest coast of Victoria, just a few miles outside of Melbourne, the hustle and bustle of the city gives way to sweeping vistas, dramatic coastline and a relaxing Aussie vibe.

Experience an aboriginal cultural center (closed Sundays) for morning tea with a uniquely Australia flavor. Hear some didgeridoo, scout for wildlife or learn to throw a boomerang. Enjoy art from around the country in their amazing gallery.

We'll stop to admire some world class surfing at Australia’s surfing heartland, Torquay and check out the site of one of the World Surf League's competitions, the "Rip Curl Pro" at Bell's Beach.

Let the scents and sounds of the native eucalyptus forests wash over you as you stretch your legs on a guided rainforest or waterfall walk.

As with all road trips, stories are an integral part of the experience. Your local guide will tell tales about the area's early explorers and share information on the indigenous flora and fauna (such as wallabies and carnivorous snails, oh my!).

We'll enjoy a delicious lunch at a seaside cafe for a taste of both the local cuisine and the ambiance of Apollo Bay. Take this opportunity to feed wild parrots, maybe spot some koalas in the treetops and keep an eye open for the "mob" of kangaroos who are call this area home.

Rising out of the rugged coastline you'll find a collection of limestone pillars known as the Twelve Apostles. These columns were once connected to the mainland but the ravages of time, wind and waves carved out first arches, and as the erosion continued, pillars. Although there are only 8 "Apostles" left standing, they are no less magnificent to behold. Your guide will take you to the viewing platform for your best look at these beautiful creations of nature.

As we head back to the city, we'll stop for an afternoon tea break, complete with unique Australian treats.

Private Melbourne: Bites & Sights

Start your private tour at the Eureka Skydeck, an 88-storey skyscraper that is home to stunning views of the city. Your guide will bring you to the top of the tower, pointing out key points of interest in the city and previewing where you will go next. After coming back down to earth, it’s time to dive into the cityscape. First, a coffee. Your guide will explain what makes Melbourne coffee unique, what to look for in a barista, and some of the vocabulary to use when ordering a coffee. You’ll put your knowledge to the test by ordering a brew, then enjoying it with your group. Next, it’s time to explore Melbourne’s famous street art scene. What used to simply be called “graffiti” has become a trendy artistic style, and the laneways of this city are filled with constantly evolving murals.

Your private guide will bring you to some of their favourites and explain how the movement has developed, exploring the work of these back alley artists until you’ve worked up an appetite. And what better way to meet that appetite than with Melbourne’s multicultural food scene. Your guide will take you to their favourite local restaurant for a hearty sample of one of the many cuisines Melbourne is known for. Here your guide will tell you about the numerous waves of migrants who have helped to create the Melbourne we see today. After you’ve finished eating, it’s time for a drink. Melbourne is filled with many fun and fabulous bars, but you need a local to tell you which ones are hot at this very moment. Your guide will take you to a trendy bar to finish things off with a beer (or soda) and a final chat.

By the end of your private tour, you’ll be able to spot amazing art, cafes, restaurants, and bars like a local. But if you still need more tips, your local guide will be happy to offer up some suggestions for the rest of your stay. (If you’d prefer to travel as part of a regular group experience, please book our Melbourne Bites and Sights group tour.) This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.

Private Melbourne: Craft Beer Lovers' Guide to Melbourne

Calling all beer fanatics! Looking for the perfect private beer tour in Melbourne? You got it. This thirst-quenching beer odyssey will take you through the best of the best on the Melbourne brew scene, from its largest brewery to those craft beers that only the true Melbourne locals know about. On top of all that, you’ll have a local guide all to yourself and you'll learn all about the history behind Melbourne’s favourite tipple, giving you all the local know-how to become the biggest Melbourne beer buff in town. Your Melbourne beer tour starts at the Southern Cross Station in Melbourne before we hit the train to one of the city's up-and-coming neighbourhoods, an area that is home to some of Melbourne’s best brewers.

After an intro from your guide, you’ll head off to the first drinking den — no messing about on this tour, you dive right in! Whilst you sip on your first beer, you’ll learn about the rogue settlement of the city, and how the Melbourne beer scene came to be. From the city’s first pub to the outlandish colonial rules governing drinking in the southern capital, this Melbourne tour covers it all. We mix it up depending which neighbourhood we are in and where is best for the day you've booked. Venues range from breweries in industrial areas to classic pubs, bowling clubs and record bars — but the one thing they all have in common is a passion for the brew. Think wietbier, XPA, pilsners, porters and bocks — we are out in search of the best and for drinking them as close to the keg as we can get.

Along the way we'll dive into some good beer-drinking snacks to make sure the night is not all totally liquid. By now on your private Melbourne beer tour, you will have been told all about Melbourne’s strict past and you will be able to witness the change and uprising of Melbourne’s unique laneway bar scene where you can try some microbrew while learning about the modern era of Melbourne’s relationship with beer. No better setting for that, we’d say! From here you can carry on your evening with some recommendations from our local guide, or if you’re in too much of a beer/food coma, your guide will also be able to point you in the direction of your accommodation or public transportation back into the city. (If you’d prefer to travel as part of a regular group experience, please book our Beer Lovers Guide to Melbourne group tour.) This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.

Private Melbourne: United States of Food
It's no secret that Australians share common values with our neighbours across the Pacific. And now, Melburnians are embracing that culture with an American food renaissance. Join our Yankee guides on this private tour and experience the rich cultural heritage taking hold in our city. Learn about American and Aussie barbecues’ shared heritage, and discover a secret bar playing host to an American tradition from 1869: pinball. And whatever you do, bring your appetite. Yee-haw! The first stop on our private Melbourne tour will be one of Australia’s oldest hamburger stands, serving up that most classic of American meals. You’ll sample some of their hamburger varieties before heading on to learn about how our food gets to the plate in many of Melbourne’s restaurants. We’ll get a farm-to-table lesson with a walk through the Queen Victoria Markets. You’ll learn how the markets aren’t just for tourists; this is where many local restaurants stock their kitchens. Continue on to an authentic local bagel shop, and learn how Australia and America’s bagel tradition derives from a shared heritage from Poland. From there we’ll move on to a secret bar in the American speakeasy tradition. Did you know that during Prohibition in the USA, illegal bars required clients to keep their voices down, or “speak easy”? Those bars are now all the rage in Melbourne, so of course we need to stop at one. Finally, we’ll end your private Melbourne food tour at an authentic American barbecue restaurant. Here, you’ll learn about the unique cooking techniques that go into making barbecued meat fall right off the bone — so maybe you can recreate some of the Aussie-American flavour on your own grill at home. Your tour will end here, but don’t forget to ask your local guide for recommendations of other places to eat while you’re in town. (If you’d prefer to travel as part of a regular group experience, please book our United States of Food group tour.) This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.

Great Wagyu Adventure

This unique tour incorporates three iconic Australian experiences in two states (South Australia and Victoria) all in the one day. In just 50 minutes from Melbourne, Victoria you will land amongst the vines of the Coonawarra in South Australia and be whisked across to Wynns Estate for a behind the scenes tour. Then slip into a lab coat to try your hand at wine making.

Next stop, the multi award winning Mayura Station in Millicent. Owner Scott deBruin purchased their first live full-blood Wagyu cattle from Japan in 1998 with a vision of producing and marketing highly consistent, premium quality Wagyu beef. Today their 7,000-strong herd is raised on a 6000-acre property located in the heart of South Australia’s Limestone Coast. Here, you will enjoy a 4 course lunch showcasing the diversity of this premium beef product. Each course is matched with a museum release Coonawarra fine wine.

The return trip completes this memorable experience with a scenic orbit of the iconic 12 Apostles along the Great Ocean Road.
