Corfu, Greece | 16 Aug 2019

  • Meals: Lunch
  • Recommended Ages: All Ages
  • Activity Level: Moderate
  • Experience(s): Food & Wine • Culture, History & Arts • Sightseeing

The gorgeous Ionian island of Corfu was part of the Venetian kingdom until the 17th century, when it passed to English rule, and shows fascinating foreign influence within its unmistakably Greek atmosphere. We’ll get our bearings at the popular overlook spot of Kanoni, with views to Mouse Island and the pretty Convent of Vlacherna before transferring to Corfu Town, the elegant guardian of the region’s history. We’ll pass by the stately Mon Repos Palace, where Prince Philip was born in 1921, and stop at Garitsa Bay to admire the 16th-century Venetian Fortress and the church of Saint George, built by the British to look like an ancient Greek temple. We’ll embark on a guided walking tour around the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and see the enchanting Town Hall, a former Venetian theater dating to 1690, and the church of Saint Spyridon, home of the remains of Sypridon, the fourth-century patron saint of the island. We’ll end in the lovely Liston arcade, a relic of a seven-year French occupation, and have some free time in town before heading to the seaside Paleokastritsa, known for six coves of incredibly clear water. A highlight here is the 13th-century monastery of the Virgin Mary and its garden.

Our final stop is Ambelonas Vineyard. We’ll enjoy a red wine aperitif and meet the owners before embarking on a tasting lunch of more than 20 local specialties, like garden-fresh green salad with rose petals and currants, Jerusalem artichoke risotto, chicken baked with yogurt, mint, and lemon sauce, and much more, paired with unlimited house wine.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Guests must be able to walk approximately 1 mile over even and uneven surfaces and inclines.

Private Excursion to Murano & Burano

Meet one of our knowledgeable local guide in your centrally located Venice hotel lobby for your private boat excursion to the Venetian lagoon islands of Burano and Murano.

At Murano you will discover the skilfull art of glass-making in a workshop. In 1291, all the glassmakers in Venice were forced to move to Murano due to the risk of fires. In the following century, exports began, and the island became famous, initially for glass beads and mirrors. Aventurine glass was invented on the island, and for a while Murano was the main producer of glass in Europe. Getting close to Burano, enjoy the spectacle of the houses painted with a wide range of bright colours, particularly popular with artists. The colors of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colors permitted for that lot. Burano rose in importance in the 16th century as a center for lace making with needles, which was exported all across Europe.

Shore Excursion: Venice & Lagoon Islands - 7 hours

Venice is undoubtedly one of the most romantic and unique cities in the world. During your private shore excursion, the dynamic history of this wondrous city will be brought to life. Begin your day with a warm greeting from your assistant, who will accompany on the private motor launch journey to the famous Piazza San Marco. Your privately guided walking tour will commence with the highlights of two of Venice’s most prominent buildings; the stunning Basilica of St Mark and the Doge's Palace, a masterpiece in Venetian Gothic architecture.

There will be time to enjoy lunch at leisure prior to your excursion to the Lagoon Islands. Burano is the most colourful of the many small islands, with brightly painted houses surrounding its waterways. Murano, the centre of the city’s world-famous glass making industry since 1291, is composed of a charming cluster of islands linked by bridges. After your visit you will be privately transferred back to your cruise ship.
