But all began in earnest 1552, when Pierre Lhomme, a rich draper from Bordeaux, bought the house noble "Guyscoutz" built a wide area and planted the first vines around this dungeon. The successors of the rich merchant knew then how to build this great building. In the nineteenth century, the Château has had his greatest transformations: transformation into a neoclassical palace, development of a park with rare species by Eugene Bülher, modernization of production tools with the construction of huge farm buildings, including the famous "Ferme Suzanne”... Since the beginning of 1995, the management is provided by Eric Albada Jelgersma, who immediately invested the renovation of the vineyard and farm buildings. He surrounded himself with a new team who now heads Margaux and in the continuity of generation’s growers who have made this area World famous Grand Cru.

Château Pavie and Château Ferrand

09.00 am: Be met in the lobby of your hotel in Bordeaux.

You will first enjoy a guided visit and wine tasting in the prestigious Château Pavie*. The first vines in St-Emilion were planted in Pavie in the 4th century. However, it was not until the 19th century that the vineyard in Pavie started to take shape. The wine is ranked “Grand Cru classé B” since 1954. Gerard Perse bought the estate in 1993 and did wonders for the wine: it is now acknowledged by specialists around the world. The vines are facing South, without maturing too early. The grape variety is now 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lunch at leisure.

You will end this enriching tour visiting the Chateau Ferrand. *With more than 300 years’ history, Chateau Ferrand is one of the oldest estate in St Emilion. The estate is nowadays managed by Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët, with the help of her husband, Philippe Chandon-Moët. The unique character of the wine comes from an exceptional terroir: Merlot (75%), Cabernet franc (15%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The vines are planted at an altitude that ranges from 46m to 100m above sea level, making it the highest and most ventilated vineyards in St Emilion. The vineyard was mapped in a large scale, with four different types of soil. All soils share a common feature, a high concentration of clay: clay-rich soils in Bordeaux offer great wine making potential.

St Emilion and the Château Laniote

09.00 am: Be met in the lobby of your hotel in Bordeaux or at your boat.

Enjoy a visit of the village of St Emilion, including the largest monolithic church in Europe.

Discover a city where history is everywhere, from the cobblestone streets to every vine leaf, including the town’s traditional macaroons. This delightful medieval village, in the heart of the world-famous Bordeaux vineyards, is the cradle of impressive monuments and gorgeous architecture. Saint-Emilion sits on a rocky promontory and is surrounded by vineyards that owe their originality to their limestone soil. From the 9th to the 19th century, men worked to extract blocks of stone in order to build St-Emilion as well as nearby chateaux. This also accounts for more than 200km of underground galleries as well as a monumental underground church. Enjoy lunch at leisure in St Emilion.

Follow with a visit of Château Laniote*, of St Emilion appellation and a wine tasting. Discover the Chateau through a complete visit with the owners as well as a video presentation. The female owner, an oenologist, will describe the different vintages to you while her husband does magic tricks. Chateau Laniote has been in the same family for almost two centuries. The property was built by Pierre Lacoste. Seven generations later, Chateau Laniote is still owned by the same family, on the female line.

Château Giscours and Château Cos d'Estournel

9:00 am: Be met in the lobby of your hotel in Bordeaux, or at your boat.

Enjoy a guided visit of the Chateau Giscours*. The Château Giscours vineyard covers four outcrops or croupes: four outstanding terroirs, made up of coarse and medium coarse gravel over steep, well-drained slopes.  This abundance of pebbles (40 to 50 %), creating poor, permeable conditions in the soil, contributes hugely to the high quality of the wines. Giscours passed from owner to owner. After the Second World War, Nicolas Tari undertook a general renovation of the estate, one of the most significant works being the creation of an artificial lake, which is today a key element in Giscours’ microclimate. One of the most important tasks was to find an ecological balance for the vineyard. The restoration of the château was then carried out, followed by an overhaul of the vineyard and cellar equipment. Enjoy lunch at leisure in St Emilion.

In the afternoon, drive to the Chateau Cos d’Estournel*, where you will enjoy a full visit, followed by a wine tasting. The vineyard of Cos spreads around the château on 91 hectares. It is composed of several vines: Cabernet Sauvignon vines (60%) and Merlot vines (40%). The percentage of Cabernet and Merlot varies from one vintage to another. Having inherited a few vines near the village of Cos, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel recognized, in 1811, the quality of their wine and decided to vinify them separately. Louis became known as ‘the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe’. To celebrate his distant conquests, he had exotic pagodas erected over his cellar, and organized spectacular festivities at Cos.
