Half-Day Amsterdam Walking Tour

Meet your local guide in the hotel lobby for your private 4 hours Amsterdam city walking tour, including a visit to Anne Frank Museum.

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a fascinating maritime city built on a network of canals. Its Rijksmuseum is world famous for its paintings by the great 17th-century Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Van Gogh Museum contains many of Van Gogh's greatest paintings and the Stedelijk Museum has an extensive collection of modern works. Other important sights are Anne Frank's House, where she hid from the Nazis and wrote her famous diary, the baroque Koninklijk Paleis and Rembrandt's House. With its gabled canal houses, houseboats and specialized shops, the city is wonderful to explore on foot or bicycle. Amsterdam is famed for its tolerance of soft drugs and sex, but it also offers higher pursuits such as classical music in the renowned Concertgebouw, home of Amsterdam's orchestra.

Private walking tour of Amsterdam (4 hrs)

Your local specialized guide will take you on a discovery journey of the hidden courtyards in the city. These courtyards were a sort of retirement and had a social housing function for old and poor people who could live there for free. The number of courtyards in Holland is difficult to estimate because of renovations and reconstructions, but the estimates number is close to 200.

The city of Amsterdam has 47 courtyards and 50% are situated in the popular and nowadays trendy neighbourhood  “de Jordaan”. Originally Amsterdam had 51 courtyards, so only 7 disappeared.

Courtyards are normally open to the public but lately more and more are closed for the public. They are also very difficult to locate, even most people from Amsterdam don't know of their existance.

Examples of famous Courtyards in Amsterdam: Claes Claeszhofje, Van Brienenhofje and het Begijnhof. Halfway the tour you can stop in a typical Dutch bar for a drink, your guide can suggest a lot of nice places.

Depart from the hotel by private car and your local guide and proceed for a private tour through

Amsterdam, passing the main highlights of the city.

We start with a panoramic drive through the city passing by historical Jewish sights. Visit the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. The synagogue was built by the architect Elias Bouman in 1675 and is the largest synagogue in the world. The exterior and interior have remained largely in their original state since its completion. The surrounding buildings include the world famous Ets Chaim library of Livraria Montezinos.

Across the street from the Synagogue you will find the Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam.Religion, culture and history of the Jews in the Netherlands dominate the museum's permanent Collection. This superbly restored building complex once comprised four Ashkenazi

synagogues. There are two large and two small synagogues, or shuls, the first inaugurated in 1671.

Big photographs, old posters, objects, films and sounds from that horrible time, help to recreate the scene. The background of the Holocaust is visualized to the visitor. This is an exhibition about the everyday life during that time, but also about exceptional historical events, resistance of the population against the Nazis and heroism.

More than three centuries have passed before the 'Oude Kerk" the earliest parish church Amsterdam attained its present form. The church has almost as many chapels as there have been building phases. The earliest building phase however is lost in the mist of time. Archaeologists think that the 'Amstelledammers, founded their first church at the turn of the 13th and 14th century. In the same area we visit yet another church “Ons Lieve Heer op Solder” a so-called “Hidden” church behind a 17th century façade. It also houses a museum giving a good impression of the city’s Catholic past.

Continue the tour to the Zeedijk, one of the oldest streets of the city where for many centuries sailors enjoyed celebrated their journey’s end in Amsterdam! Here you will find the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple, the largest Budhist temple in Europe, built in traditional Chinese palace-style. The character of the temple is Chinese, however Buddhism and practicing Buddhism are both universal and beyond architectural features and culture. The tour ends at the Nieuwmarkt, a trendy and lively square with many bars and restaurants in the adjacent streets. Here we will have a drink in one of the oldest bars called “’t Loosje”.
