Half-Day Amsterdam Walking Tour

Meet your local guide in the hotel lobby for your private 4 hours Amsterdam city walking tour, including a visit to Anne Frank Museum.

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a fascinating maritime city built on a network of canals. Its Rijksmuseum is world famous for its paintings by the great 17th-century Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Van Gogh Museum contains many of Van Gogh's greatest paintings and the Stedelijk Museum has an extensive collection of modern works. Other important sights are Anne Frank's House, where she hid from the Nazis and wrote her famous diary, the baroque Koninklijk Paleis and Rembrandt's House. With its gabled canal houses, houseboats and specialized shops, the city is wonderful to explore on foot or bicycle. Amsterdam is famed for its tolerance of soft drugs and sex, but it also offers higher pursuits such as classical music in the renowned Concertgebouw, home of Amsterdam's orchestra.

Private walking tour of Amsterdam (4 hrs)

Your local specialized guide will take you on a discovery journey of the hidden courtyards in the city. These courtyards were a sort of retirement and had a social housing function for old and poor people who could live there for free. The number of courtyards in Holland is difficult to estimate because of renovations and reconstructions, but the estimates number is close to 200.

The city of Amsterdam has 47 courtyards and 50% are situated in the popular and nowadays trendy neighbourhood  “de Jordaan”. Originally Amsterdam had 51 courtyards, so only 7 disappeared.

Courtyards are normally open to the public but lately more and more are closed for the public. They are also very difficult to locate, even most people from Amsterdam don't know of their existance.

Examples of famous Courtyards in Amsterdam: Claes Claeszhofje, Van Brienenhofje and het Begijnhof. Halfway the tour you can stop in a typical Dutch bar for a drink, your guide can suggest a lot of nice places.

Private Dutch beer and canal tour (4 hrs)

Meet your local guide in the lobby of the hotel and walk to the pier where the discovery of Amsterdam starts on board of the Canalbus. This regular boat service offers a journey through the cultural centre of Amsterdam, a cruise past historical landmarks passing modern architecture in the city’s newer areas, see a windmill, warehouses, two of the busiest markets in Amsterdam, museums and the IJ river. Leave the boat for a short walk to the local market called Albert Cuyp and visit the Heineken experience.  Enjoy a voyage of discovery through the “World of Heineken”. Walk through malt silos, take a peek inside the mash coppers and stand in the lager cellars where young beer was once matured and of course you will enjoy a refreshing glass of Heineken beer in the Brew House. The former Heineken brewery is a National Monument and is listed as an anchor point along the European Route of Industrial Heritage. After the visit continue your tour on board of the canalbus, while you guide will show you the highlights along the way and give directions, as you can continue to use your canalbus pass for the rest of the day. Your guide will be at your disposal for maximum 4 hours.

Private tour Famous Dutch villages

In the surrounding of Amsterdam there are many beautiful and typical Dutch villages which are worth visiting. During this tour we first visit Marken, a former island, now connected to the mainland by a dike. A unique place to visit with elevated houses on pillars, traditional green painted houses and folkloristic customs and customes. Walk along the small bridges and little alleys and admire the historic houses.

Continue to Monnickendam. This town is a former fisherman’s village and has an interesting history. During the city walk you will see the beautiful City Hall and ‘De Waag’ a place where they used to weigh the ship’s cargo coming in from overseas. Try some Dutch fish specialties: ‘gerookte paling’ (smoked eel) or herring.

Proceed to Broek in Waterland. Here you will stop for a refreshment, but not before you have seen the characteristic wooden houses this village proudly owns. Famous people like the French philosopher Victor Hugo, the emperor Alexander of Russia and Napoleon visited this small village. (4 hours)

Private tour Aalsmeer, Rotterdam and Kinderdijk Windmills (8 hrs)

Depart from the hotel by private car and your local guide and depart for a full day tour.

The first stop on this tour is at the town of Aalsmeer, the center of flower culture. Visit the flower auction (closed on Saturdays and Sundays) The most important flower auction in Holland and see how millions of flowers are auctioned daily and shipped to all corners of the world. Learn about the trade and process of buying and selling. Continue to Delft, a lovely medieval town, famous for its “Delft Blue” pottery (stop for a short visit). Afterwards proceed to Rotterdam, one of the world’s largest commercial transits harbours in Europe and famous for modern architecture and design.

The former headquarters of the Holland America Cruise line has been transformed in a hotel / restaurant and could be a nice place for lunch (not included). Enjoy the architecture of Rotterdam and visit one of the cubical houses, a unique experience! Proceed to the Kinderdijk windmill area. Nowhere in the world you will find as many windmills as neat as at Kinderdijk. Around 1740 no less than 19 sturdy mills were built here. They have been well preserved to the present day. The mills drain the excess of water from the polders (reclaimed-land below sea level). The Powerful mill wings  serve to transmit the windforce to large paddlewheels scooping up the water. Nowadays electric power driven pumping engines do the job. Visit the kinderdijk village, and the inside of a windmill.
