Crafts And Birds In The Heartland Of Singapore
The culture of hand-made crafts is fascinating, but in most locations, as generations die out, it is losing its audience as well as the talented people that have mastered these special products. Our expert and very personable guide will direct you to an area of the city where the last remaining businesses still fashion their wares by hand. This scene is becoming a rarity in Singapore and around the world. Along with the special crafts you will witness an interesting hobby call Bird Singing, where you will find yourself serenaded by these special Song Birds.

The excursion is comprised of several stops, each of which will give you a window into the past life here. The first is right in the local heartlands where one of the largest Bird Singing corners is located. In this spot, birds actually get to practice their vocal chords and give you a chance to chat with the 'uncles', the owners who love their birds. Imagine the photographs and the stories you can return home with from just this one stop!

If you have ever watched Lion Dances and noticed the incredible colorful Lion Heads? One of the last remaining craftsmen who still makes these Lion Heads out of his home is one of your visits. It will not be long before these will no longer be created and on your visit you can order one of these beautifully crafted heads, though no pressure to do so. This is more about the exposure of a dwindling art.

Every think about incense sticks and how they are made, particularly those giant ones at the Chinese temples? Find out more about their history and creation right from the horse's mouth. If you wish, you can even try your hand and use the raw materials to fashion your own scented stick.

Finally you will be introduced to the 'master' craftsman who makes some of the most gorgeous lanterns by hand. This master artist provides the lanterns for numerous Chinese temples and Clan associations. These lanterns are all constructed of paper and the 'factory' you visit has an array of paper offerings that are commonly sold as donations at temples all over the world. These offerings are used as burnt for the Gods, Ancestors, and Ghosts, for good fortune and good health. No doubt you will want to select some pieces as perfect souvenirs to take home. At the least, you will bring back an incredible understanding of the culture and talent of the Singaporeans.

Tour Award Winning Public Housing In Singapore
Singapore was once known to have the worst slums in the world. Today the public housing program is a source of national pride. Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB) has now received 3 UN awards over the last 25 years and over 80% of Singapore's resident population has called HDB flats home. On this tour you will really be immersed in the culture of the country as you learn the hows and whys of public housing policies that have proven successful.

On the first part of the tour you will find yourself with your outstanding guide in Toa Payoh, one of the first public housing projects in the country. Here you will visit the Hub of Public Housing and see the mock up of various apartments. As you view them, you will hear why they are considered more like a 'marriage proposition' than a lease agreement. As one of Singapore’s oldest housing estates, Toa Payoh was the first to benefit from the Estate Renewal Strategy – an integrated and systematic approach to rejuvenate older HDB towns, making them more comparable with newer estates. The estate renewal efforts revitalized Toa Payoh, and the pioneer HDB town is a vibrant place today.

On the second part of this tour you will visit the tallest public housing in Singapore - and in the world! It is called Pinnacle@Duxton and this award-winning development features the world's two longest sky gardens. One of the highlights of this tour is to see the inside of a 4-room HDB flat within the development. You will also visit the sky bridge on the 50th floor where you will be a wonderful view of the central part of Singapore.

Though the subject matter of this tour may sound more like a thesis, in today's modern world, you will see how Singapore has handled a problem that every country, and every major city is faced with. A view into these solutions also tells you much about the creativity and the sensitivity that the country of Singapore has exhibited in its problem-solving.

Geylang, The Last Frontier
Mention Geylang and for many, the name immediately conjure the image of the 'red light district'. The Geylang area of Singapore continues to be one of the hottest topics in Asia, and millions wander the three mile Geylang Road and it’s surrounding “lorongs” each year.

But beneath this seedy image, it is a colorful mix of food, sex, history, culture and vintage. Arguably Singapore's most colorful enclave, Geylang has managed to maintain her authenticity by resisting gentrification. With more than 120 buildings in the area that houses religious groups, volunteer welfare organizations and clan associations, the neighborhood fills you with a palpable sense of spirituality and humanity.

Amble through the 'Lorongs', small roads, learn about the history of the various sectors, marvel at the beautiful shop houses and munch on one of best 'Dim Sum' around. We will visit a Tibetan Buddhist Temple with an amazing collection of 'Thangkas' and a beautifully restored Mosque built in the 1920s. We will also find out about the Hakka people and their contributions to Singapore when we visit their clan association. Finally, we will visit a wonderful shop house, whose owner, an enthusiast and collector, operates a home-store with an amazing array of religious and cultural artefacts, a virtual 'Aladdin's Cave'. At this last stop, you may stay and linger at your leisure.

Join in and enjoy this multicultural and multisensory experience.
