Private Sydney: When Rum Ran the Rocks

Alright, let’s get to know Sydney a little better — what do you say? Join us for your very own private tour around one of the most famous neighbourhoods in Sydney Wind your way through the back alleyways, up the steps and back in time to uncover the stories and people who shaped this fledgling colony. Hear all about Sydney’s oldest pubs, the first breweries, amazing convict tales, and a rebellion over the most precious drink of all… rum! As Australia’s first neighbourhood, the Rocks was literally cut from the sandstone cliffs that rise above Sydney Harbour. On this private Sydney walking tour, we’ll carve out a narrative of this neighbourhood’s history, starting with the convicts that were forced to settle here and their amazing tales of survival and entrepreneurship.

Along the way, we’ll make pit stops at some classic local pubs in the heart of the Rocks. From there, we’ll explore the once seedy back alleyways, which today are very safe, of course, but still feature many great photo opportunities. After a drink at another historical pub, we’ll delve deeper into some of the unique and most off-the-beaten-track parts of the Rocks as we visit an archaeological site like no other in Australia. We’ll finish up your private Sydney tour by enjoying one last beer back near where the tour began. (If you’d prefer to travel as part of a regular group experience, please book our When Rum Ran the Rocks group tour.) This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.

Private Sydney: Eat, Drink and Walk the City

This food and drink tour of Sydney will give you a literal taste of all the city has to offer! Over the course of the evening, you will visit three different small bars, all tucked away in basements, back alleys, old horse-cart carriageways, loading docks, and other hard-to-find corners. We’ll spend about 45 minutes in each venue, giving you plenty of time to sample some snacks and/or enjoy a drink, depending on what’s on offer at each place. One of the great things about this tour is that it’s rarely the same thing twice! We might be treated to specialty pizza one time or tapas or dumplings another time, washed down with maybe a glass of mulled wine in winter or sangria in summer.

Come with an open mind for whatever’s placed in front of you! And as this is a private tour, we can tailor our stops around your food preferences; neat, huh?! In between stops, you’ll be guided along some of Sydney’s most interesting streets, where you can discover other venues, see fantastic street art, spy intriguing spaces, and learn where the locals really go after work hours. We’ll start our tour at the glass dome in Wynyard Park, the site of the old military barracks where the New South Wales Corps marched to arrest Governor Bligh in 1808 — known later as the Rum Rebellion. In the mid-1800s, it then became a site for shops and homes, with a recreational square.

The tour will end in the Kent Street area, after three hours of exploring the city centre via the nooks and crannies hidden away in downtown Sydney. (If you’d prefer to travel as part of a regular group experience, please book our Eat Drink Walk Sydney group tour.) This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.
