Trujillo Highlights and a Traditional Lunch - Salaverry - 2018 ( 7 Hours )
Salaverry, Peru | 17 Nov 2018

Today we will depart from the pier in Salaverry and drive to the Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna - the Temples of the Sun and Moon, constructed from millions of handmade adobe bricks. This Mochica archaeological site is located on the northern coast of Peru. The mysterious Mochica culture was centered here from AD 100 to 900.

The Temple of the Stars and the White Hill Temple pyramids are also located here, along with the renowned spider geoglyph lurking on the hillside nearby. The Moche Temples cover an area of 148 acres and are separated by an esplanade 500 yards wide, under which lies the urban center where the Moche élite lived. Interestingly, the Mochica era ended because El Niño brought tropical rains and floods to the northern coast of Peru.

Next, we will head to the city of Trujillo and stop at the main square. Beautiful colonial buildings found here include the cathedral, City Hall, the offices of the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, and the beautiful houses of the patrician families, as well as the Hotel El Libertador. Pass the colonial house of the Urquiaga family -- aristocrat farmers whose social status dates back to the early days of the Republic. Colorfully painted, the house features meticulously crafted wrought iron window shutters as well as enormous patios and living rooms that define opulence.

We will then enjoy a lunch of delicious Peruvian food at a local restaurant.

After lunch we will make a stop at the picturesque fishing village of Huanchaco which offers a chance to see the famous caballitos de totora. These ‘little reed horses’ are a type of high-prow boat that the local fishermen essentially ride like horses over the crest of each wave. They have been used by Peruvian fishermen for millennia and seem to work quite handily despite their rather insubstantial appearance.

Our last stop before returning to the pier in Salaverry will be a visit to the Chan Chan archaeological complex, the largest mud city of the Americas and the most important city of the Chimú culture, which spanned over 12 miles. Its central area is formed by a group of ten walled premises called citadels and other independent pyramids. The rest of the complex is composed of several small structures, sidewalks, canals, walls, and cemeteries.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual and comfortable clothing and walking shoes. There are several steps inside Huaca de la Luna and a fair amount of uphill walking. Uneven terrain at Moon temple and Chan Chan.
