Daintree National Park, Port Douglas and Lunch - Cairns - 2018 ( 8 Hours )
Cairns, Australia | 14 Dec 2018

  • Meals: Lunch
  • Recommended Ages: All Ages
  • Activity Level: Moderate
  • Experience(s): Food & Wine • Sightseeing • Culture, History & Arts

Our day begins where we will become acquainted with our expert guides and board a luxurious coach. Soon after, we will depart up the Eastern Australian coast, along the Coral Sea on Captain Cook Highway. Just as the Pacific Coast Highway is famous in the United States, Captain Cook highway is regarded as one of the most distinguished routes in the world, and forms the Great Tropical Drive. Just miles off the shore is the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system. After just over an hour, we will arrive at the Mossman Gorge Center, located in the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park.

Here, we will join an aboriginal Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk. We will be welcomed by a traditional ‘smoking’ ceremony, in which indigenous Australians burn various native plants to produce smoke, which is believed to possess cleansing properties, and ward off negative spirits. Our interpretive Indigenous guide will then accompany us on a walk through the stunning rainforest, and introduce us to the aboriginal uses of the plants we come across, as well as identify the local food sources from the bush. Our guide will be able to give us an enchanting narrative explaining the former lifestyle of the Aboriginal Australian people and their special relationship with this unique tropical environment. We’ll then stop at ‘the Beach’ for an opportunity to take a refreshing swim or wade in a water hole where our guide will demonstrate traditions such as making bush soaps and ochre paintings. At the end of our walk, we will enjoy traditional bush tea and damper.

After having worked up an appetite from the meandering walk, we will enjoy an immaculate lunch at the 5-star Silky Oaks Lodge. Silky Oaks is one of the world’s most preeminent luxury eco-lodges and provides unparalleled accommodation amongst the Daintree Rainforest. The Treehouse Restaurant presents one of Northern Queensland’s most premier dining experiences, and the open-sided restaurant offers sensational rainforest and Mossman River views. As if the ambience was not sufficient, the menu showcases the freshest local produce, and modern Australian cuisine along with European and Asian influences.

Before returning to Cairns, we’ll stop by the charming township of Port Douglas. A casual stroll along Macrossan Street, the central artery of the village, will introduce us to a variety of stylish restaurants, cafes, bookshops, and boutiques. Those with a taste for art may stop into one of many local galleries offering phenomenal pieces. At one end of Macrossan Street is the magnificent, palm-fringed Four Mile Beach, a spectacular place to enjoy a lazy afternoon gazing out at the clear blue sea. On the other end is Anzac Park, where the picturesque St Mary’s by the Sea chapel stands. We’ll have one hour of free time to spend in Port Douglas, before re-boarding the coach to take us back to the ship.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Comfortable, casual wear with walking shoes are recommended. There will be a moderate amount of walking on gently sloped surfaces at Daintree National Park and an opportunity to swim. Walking will be at your discretion during our one hour of free time in Port Douglas.

Sailing Schooner To The Great Barrier Reef With Snorkel Or Dive Options
From the moment you step on board this 52' sailing schooner, you'll know you have made the right decision for your visit to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef. With a maximum of only 25 people on board, the attentive crew will ensure your safety and comfort. Starting off with coffee, tea, pastries and fresh fruit, the adventure begins. Get into the spirit by helping to hoist the sails or kick back and enjoy the ride. Your choice.

When booking, you will have the choice to snorkel, learn to scuba or perhaps if you are a certified diver, a one or two tank dive. This is the perfect opportunity to try something new! The professional instructors will help you feel at ease and provide all the essential equipment and information for a first time diver. Don't worry, the guide will be right by your side for the entire dive, ensuring a wonderful experience.

Your friendly staff will supply high quality snorkel equipment, buoyancy vests and wetsuits (if needed), along with snorkeling instructions for those who are new to this activity. Upon arrival at their private mooring at one of the best kept secrets on the Great Barrier Reef, it's time to slip into the water and prepare to be amazed by the incredible beauty of the life below. Marvel at the uniqueness of the coral. Wonder at the wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors of creatures such as the coral trout, batfish, spangled emperors, yellow-tailed fusiliers, the giant trevally, sea turtles and even the harmless black-tipped reef shark. You won't want to leave.

After a splendid time in the water, you'll re-board the boat for the sail to Green Island. Snorkeling can work up quite an appetite and a sumptuous buffet lunch awaits, complete with Tasmanian smoked salmon, prawns, chicken, salads and breads awaits, served up by your friendly crew.

Arrival at Green Island will be a lovely surprise. The tender will take you right to the shore of this 6,000 year old coral cay. Home to more than 120 species of birds and plants, Green island is the only coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef that contains a rainforest. You can choose to stroll around the island, snorkel a bit more or purchase one of the activities offered, such as a glass bottom boat ride or visit Marineland Melanesia.

Back on board, take a seat and put your feet up while your crew provides cheese, crackers, cake and a complimentary glass of wine. To ease you back to "the real world", your captain turns off the engines for a true sailing experience.
