Israel’s third largest city and one of its prettiest, Haifa has a lot to offer visitors. Surrounded by abundant nature sites, the city contains an interesting mix of modern neighborhoods and older districts; churches and mosques; mountain and sea.

Our day will take us to two of Israel’s major tourist attractions - Caesarea and Haifa - fabled for their historical, cultural and religious significance.

Begin the city tour with a drive through the German Colony, and then up to Mount Carmel. Pass by the Stella Maris Carmelite Monastery to Yefeh Nof Street, stopping for a panoramic view of Haifa Bay, the golden dome of the Baha’i Shrine and Persian Gardens (a World Heritage Site). Drive past the Druze villages of Daliat-El-Carmel and Ussifiya. Continue via the Carmel Mountain Forest, to the Zichron Ya'ackov Winery, for wine tasting and a refreshment stop.

Our tour will continue with a picturesque drive from Haifa along the shores of the inviting Mediterranean Sea as we make our way to Caesarea Maritime. This ancient port city was built by Herod the Great on the ruins of an ancient anchorage known as Stratton’s tower. Named in honor of King Herod’s Roman patron, Augustus Caesar, the city became the capital of Roman and Byzantine Palestine. The city is also known as being the location of the Roman victory celebration after the fall of Jerusalem, as well as the place where Rabbi Akiva and his disciples were executed following the supervision of the Bar Kochba revolt.

Our walking tour begins with a visit to the Roman theater to see a short movie that gives an introduction to the history of Caesarea. From here, walk to the remains of the Palace of King Herod, and then through the Hippodrome to the luxurious Byzantine bath-houses and well-preserved mosaic floors. Continue along the ancient Cardo and enter the Crusader City. Within its walls, see the remnants of the Crusader Church and view the remains of the ancient Herodian Harbor.

We will then enjoy a lunch of local specialties at a restaurant in Caesarea's old port before we return to the ship.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Lightweight clothing, hats and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. If a stop is made at Stella Maris Church, long sleeved shirts will be necessary. There will be approximately one hour of light to moderate walking over cobbled streets.
