Highlights of Sitka with a Festive Lunch - Sitka - 2018 ( 6 Hours )
Sitka, AK, United States | 29 Jul 2018

  • Meals: Lunch
  • Recommended Ages: All Ages
  • Activity Level: Moderate
  • Experience(s): Food & Wine • Culture, History & Arts • Sightseeing • Wildlife & Nature

We will begin our day with an introduction to Sitka along with a tour of the Alaska Raptor Center, a visit to the Sitka Sound Science Center, a Tlingit dance demonstration and a viewing of bears being cared for in captivity.

Depart the pier with our local driver-guide, who will provide commentary and point out sites of interest during our scenic transfer to Sitka's raptor hospital. Pass by the Russian Bishop's House, St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church and a National Cemetery en route to a close-up encounter with Alaska's bald eagle. The Bald Eagle Center operates with bird care professionals assisted by volunteers to rescue birds, provide them with rehabilitative care and hopefully release them back into the wild. After our introduction to the center, a presentation with one of the Center's educational birds will take place. Time will be available to view the flight center, clinic window, outside deck habitat areas and gift shop.

Arriving at the Sitka Sound Science Center get up close and personal in the touch tanks; the best way to learn about the amazing undersea life of the Sitka Sound is to touch, see, and even smell them! The licensed facility also includes five in-wall mounted aquariums showcasing mini versions of many of the ecosystems important to marine life in Southeast Alaska. The lobby features an 800-gallon saltwater tank containing some of the fishes and invertebrates found around 60 feet down, including rockfish, sculpins, and the resident wolf eel, Wanda. The aquarium is also home to an adolescent killer whale skeleton. At the adjacent gift shop you will have the opportunity to purchase various souvenirs.

Next, depart to the Naa Kahidi hall for a Native dance performance. This authentic Native dance performance is educational and entertaining. All who attend are left with a lasting impression of the Tlingit people. Held in a traditional style Tlingit Clan House, the performance begins with the sound of a resonating box drum and the aroma of burning cedar as it fills the room. Tlingit dancers enter with beautiful regalia, mesmerizing the audience with ancient songs handed down through generations. Meet the dancers after the performance for an opportunity for additional photos and questions.

After the performance, we will take a short drive to the Channel Club restaurant and enjoy a lunch of local specialties.

Our final stop is a visit to the Fortress of the Bears, which allows you to get within 25 feet of Alaska’s brown bears in a naturalized setting. We will enjoy observing 3 populations of bears from a covered viewing platform and interact with an experienced naturalist. After the bear tour, you may disembark on the main street to shop or be returned directly to the pier.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Layered clothing, light rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes. Moderate walking. Most walking surfaces are paved sidewalks except for the bear area which is hard packed dirt with an elevated boardwalk to view the bears. To access the platform you will need to climb 20 stairs or walk up a ramp way.
