Highlights of Tallinn, Maarjamäe Palace and Lunch - Tallinn - 2018 ( 6 Hours 30 Minutes )
Tallinn, Estonia | 02 Sep 2018

Tallinn is a quintessential medieval city – fortified walls, 13th-century buildings, cobblestone streets – on Estonia's Baltic coast. The Ests are ethnic and linguistic cousins of the Finns. The Finns never ruled Estonia, but virtually all of Estonia's other neighbors have "colonized" the republic in the last millennium. The saga is varied: first came the Danes (who founded Tallinn), then in the 16th century the Swedes arrived (they imposed the Lutheran Reformation), the Poles followed (and monopolized the 17th century), and finally the Russians arrived (they first laid claim in the 18th century, departed in the early 20th century – and then came back in 1939). True independence was not achieved until 1991.

Today we will spend the morning in the Old Town of Tallinn, entered in the UNESCO heritage list as one of the best survived medieval towns in Europe. We’ll first proceed to the Upper Town, admiring the skyline of Cathedral Hill and on our way, make a stop at the foot of Dome Hill. From here, we will walk to the Palace Square and view the Parliament House and the Russian Orthodox Church. We will also see the restored part of the city wall with its towers. After a walk in the Upper Town we will take a short break for refreshments in one of the oldest coffee shops of Tallinn before continuing on to Lower Town. In Lower Town we will stop for panoramic views of the Holy Ghost Church, Great Guild House and numerous medieval merchants’ homes, Town Hall, and Town Hall Square. It will then be time for our wonderful luncheon!

Our lunch will be served at a charming art nouveau style restaurant close to the Town Hall Square where we will enjoy local Estonian dishes.

After lunch we will be taken to the Maarjamäe Palace, a renovated history discovery center where you can see innovative and fascinating exhibitions celebrating the centenary of the Estonian Republic. The highlight of the center is the interactive exhibition "My Free Country" that tells fascinating stories of the Estonian people. Here we will see and experience how the everyday life has changed over a hundred years including home designs and furniture from the 1920’s but also that of the Soviet time. In the charming park of the museum you can see a collection of Soviet -time monuments and a huge map of Estonia.

We will then return to the ship passing by Pirita marina that hosts annual international regattas and has also been the site of the Olympic yachting and St. Birgit’s convent.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Moderate walking for about two hours (distance about 1.8 km) in the Old Town with a coffee break after a one-hour walk. Mostly smooth surface but there are steps to the Russian Orthodox Church (inside visit is not obligatory) and descending into the Lower Town by Patkuli staircase (some 40 very low steps with intervals). There will be about a 50-minute walk inside the Maarjamäe Palace.
