For more than 10 centuries, from 794 to 1868, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and the center of its civilization. Brimming with historical and religious traditions and being the birthplace of the country's traditional arts and crafts that have won the admiration of the world, Kyoto occupies a unique position amongst the great cities of the world. Nestled picturesquely among the surrounding mountains, it still retains an old-world charm.

Our first stop today will be a the Kinkakuji Temple, or the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. This temple is a famous structure dating from the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) and was listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1994. It is the popular name of Rokuon-ji (Deer Park Temple), a temple dedicated to the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358-1408), the third of the Ashikaga Shoguns, built a retirement estate there in 1398. After his death in 1419, the grounds were turned into a Buddhist temple for the Rinzai sect. The only building to remain standing of Yoshimitsu's estate was the Golden Pavilion. The upper stories are covered in gold leaf and the roof is topped by a bronze phoenix.

We will then enjoy a delicious Japanese-Italian fusion lunch at The Sodoh Higashiyama Kyoto.

After lunch, we will depart to Nijo Castle, built by Leyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603. Nijo Castle is a World Heritage Site and its Ninomaru Palace is designated a National Treasure on account of its splendid architecture and magnificent interior decoration. Leyasu built the castle as his Kyoto residence, but its greater significance was as a symbol of Tokugawa power in the Kansai region. The palace is an example of "shoin-zukuri" style, its four building groups staggered so that as many rooms as possible could front a garden or court. The interior is decorated with wall paintings by the Kano school. The floorboards of corridors creak underfoot. Called "bush warbler boards," they warned of the approach of an assassin.

Next we will visit Yasaka Shrine. Commonly called Gion Shrine, as this being located at the east end of Gion district, it is dedicated to the Shinto deities Susano-o-no-Mikoto and his family. The present Main Shrine was erected in 1654 and is an old residential style by the forth Tokugawa Shogun, Letsuna.

Before returning to the ship we will pass thru the Gion district. On both sides of the Kamogawa river, between the area contained by Sanjo-dori (3rd street) and Shijo-dori (4th street) is Kyoto's traditional pleasure quarter. Kabuki had its start here, and there have been ochaya (teahouses) and Geisha here since the late 1500's. The narrow laneways of Pontocho offer many bars and riverside dining in the summer, while further west - the area bounded by Karasuma-dori (west), Oike-dori (north), the river (east) and Shijo-dori (south) - is the shopper's paradise with department stores and specialty shops to keep any avid shopper busy.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Moderate walking.

Meet your tour guide at the Ocean Terminal to begin your tour to the Sam Tung UK Museum. This is a restored 18th Century Hakka walled village built in 1786. A temporary exhibition on Chinese education in the exhibition hall and full commentary will bring everything to life.

Continue on to Tai Po Old Market that provides a small remnant of its traditional past in the midst of modern town planning. You can find fish, fruit, vegetables, meat and household goods at this market.

We will then make a stop at the Man Mo Temple in Tai Po.

Our final stop will be Lo Wai Walled Village. This is the first walled village built by the Tang clan. Built on a small hill, it is enclosed by brick walls on all four sides. The narrowness of the entrance was meant to facilitate the defense of the village. In 1997, Lo Wai was declared a monument. Today, it remains the cradle of clan activities and houses the family’s descendants.

Transfer back to Ocean Terminal.
