Images of A Golden Land (5 Days)

Cruise Line: Belmond Cruises
Bagan, Myanmar to Mandalay, Myanmar
Bagan, Myanmar

Board the ship at Taung Be village near Bagan. Enjoy lunch onboard and disembark for a tour of Ananda, one of Bagan's most magnificent temples. Continue on to a lesser-known temple, which you will explore by torchlight. The day ends watching the sun set over the plains of Bagan, followed by an exclusive candle-lighting ceremony at a small temple near our jetty. Tonight, dine under the stars at the Road to Mandalay Grill on the Observation Deck.

Bagan, Myanmar

Before setting sail, embark on the morning adventure of your choice. Select from a sunrise temple tour, a visit to a local community project, or a bicycle or horse-and-cart ride around Old Bagan. An inspiring hot-air balloon flight is also available at an additional supplement. As the ship continues on, there are a range of onboard activities to keep you entertained. Relax by the pool on the Observation Deck, the largest outdoor space of any river cruise ship in Myanmar, or keep fit in the gym. Sample local infusions and delicacies in the Burmese Tea Shop and examine an exhibition of work from a local artist. In the evening, you are invited to don a longyi for a special cocktail party before sitting down to dine on a selection of Asian and Western dishes in the elegant Restaurant.

Myinmu, Myanmar

Arrive this morning at Myin Mu, a charming riverside town just 30 miles south of Mandalay. Join our guides to explore the area by trishaw. Highlights include visits to a bustling market, a traditional Burmese slipper producer and a family of bamboo weavers. Return to the ship for lunch, then set off to the picturesque farming village of Alacapa. Walk around the town and get a rare insight into local life. The villagers grow a variety of crops here, including corn, sesame, chilli peppers and fava beans. Back on the ship, anticipate traditional entertainment after dinner.

Mandalay, Myanmar

After breakfast, set off on your choice of two full-day excursions. The first tour takes you to Mandalay, visiting the UNESCO-listed Kuthodaw Pagoda and the wooden monastery of Shwenandaw. Afterwards you'll pass through the streets of the marble quarter and visit a family of bronze casters. Continuing on you'll encounter the famous U Bein Bridge and the Sagaing Hills, where you have a rare opportunity to visit a nunnery. Alternatively, head off to discover Monywa, a town on the Chindwin River that is often missed by tourists. This remote area is home to the world's tallest standing Buddha statue. You will also explore the brightly-coloured Thanbuddhay temple and visit a small thanaka market. Back onboard, the chef has been preparing a spectacular farewell feast.

Mandalay, Myanmar

An early-bird breakfast is served before you disembark from Belmond Road to Mandalay for your onward travel arrangements.
