Southeast Asia and Hong Kong (15 Days)

Cruise Line: Viking Cruises
Ship: Viking Orion
Laem Chabang, Thailand to Hong Kong, China
Laem Chabang, Thailand

Arrive in Bangkok today. Settle in to your veranda stateroom and take time to explore your ship. Because we are berthed overnight in Laem Chabang, you will have much of the day tomorrow to explore the glittering Thai capital.

Laem Chabang, Thailand

Experience the cultural splendor of Old Siam, beautifully set on the Chao Phraya River. Take your time to enjoy the exquisite flavors of Thailand during a typical lunch. Then take in the other sights and sounds of one of Southeast Asia's most colorful and cosmopolitan cities on a panoramic tour that includes a stop for an exterior view of the Grand Palace. Admire the city's many canals plied by traditional longboats and other small vessels. You will occasionally stop for photos as you enjoy the kaleidoscopic scenery.

Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Call on Cambodia's coastal town of Sihanoukville, surrounded by stunning sand beaches and turquoise waters. Here, New Khmer architecture overlooks the comings and goings of modern tuk-tuks, carriages drawn by motorcycles. Visit Wat Krom with its colorful murals and Buddha sculptures, stroll Independence Beach, and explore a local market and fishing village. Sihanoukville is the gateway to Cambodia's stunning Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world and a supreme example of classical Khmer architecture. If you wish, you may join an overnight excursion to witness this magnificent sprawling temple complex.

Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Take the day to experience the authentic Khmer culture of Sihanoukville, ringed by stunning sand beaches and cerulean waters. Take in the local ambiance at the town's market, return to Independence Beach, or explore the beaches lined with colorful fishing boats. If you ventured to the magnificent 12th-century Buddhist temple complex of Angkor Wat yesterday, you will return today.

Gulf of Thailand (Cruising)

Today you will enter the Gulf of Thailand, the former Gulf of Siam. Long an important waterway for traders and merchants, it has helped shape the economies of Southeast Asia and the Malay Peninsula for centuries. As you cruise, you might enjoy the views from your stateroom's veranda or from the Infinity Pool. This evening, attend a port talk about your upcoming Thailand ports and enjoy a star-filled night sky.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Call in Ho Chi Minh City today, formerly known as Saigon. Explore a heady mix of French and Vietnamese cultures here, where baguettes and croissants are sold alongside pho, Vietnam's beloved noodle soup. Browse the enlightening exhibits at the National History Museum, where galleries chronicle the nation's past. View the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office, and Chinatown. And meet artisans at a lacquer workshop.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

With two nights in Ho Chi Minh City, you will have ample time to immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the south. You might choose to tour the fabled Mekong Delta. Known to many as "Vietnam's rice bowl", it is one of the most fertile areas in the nation, overflowing with fruit, vegetables, and seafood, much of it sold at the many floating markets. This fascinating region seems untouched by the passage of time.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Enjoy another day exploring the cultural treasures of Ho Chi Minh City, absorbing its French colonial accents and bustling markets. Stop by its oldest and largest, Ben Thanh Market, to experience Old Saigon at its most authentic. If you wish, you can visit the legendary tunnels of Cu Chi, a vast network of subterranean passageways used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.

South China Sea (Cruising)

Sail into the South China Sea today, waters that have been navigated for thousands of years. Nanhai, or the South Sea, is one of the Four Seas of Chinese literature. In that literary tradition, it serves as mere metaphor. But the beauty of these waters and the enriching destinations to which they lead is very real.

DAY 10
Da Nang, Vietnam

Explore Da Nang, a sleepy backwater transformed into a US base during the Vietnam War and today a bustling cultural center. Witness typical Vietnamese countryside here, blanketed with rice paddies and dotted with water buffalo. Admire the city's colonial architecture, standing alongside ornate temples, and explore the fascinating Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture. You will also visit legendary China Beach, where US soldiers came for relaxation during the war. If you wish, explore the splendid architecture of Hoi An, spared from wartime bombing, or the treasures of Hue, once a dynastic capital.

DAY 11
Ha Long, Vietnam

Sail into the breathtaking world of Ha Long Bay, an astonishing 100-mile stretch of some 2,000 towering karst islands. These mystical-looking monoliths are said to have been created by dragons descending to the sea and leaving behind droplets of jade to protect the mainland from marauders. Wind your way through this remarkable seascape on an authentic Vietnamese junk.

DAY 12
Ha Long, Vietnam

Explore more of Ha Long Bay today, taking in dramatic views from your veranda, the Aquavit Terrace or the Explorers' Lounge. If you'd like, travel to Vietnam's northern cultural center of Hanoi, a richly textured city evocative of Old Vietnam. In its atmospheric Old Quarter, old temples and storefronts date back centuries.

DAY 13
Haikou, China

Discover Haikou today, situated on Hainan Island off the southern coast of mainland China. During a tour of this vibrant city, you will visit the historic quarter and the city's inviting green parks. Admire a gleaming-white blend of colonial-era Portuguese and French façades alongside Southeast Asian architecture with Indian and Arabic accents.

DAY 14
Hong Kong, China

Cruise into dazzling Hong Kong this morning and admire the glittering forest of skyscrapers standing between soaring mountains, a bustling harbor, and offshore islands. See where deeply held Eastern traditions meet modern Western sensibilities during a panoramic city tour that takes you up Victoria Peak for sweeping views of the metropolis. An overnight stay in Hong Kong lets you explore further on your own or with one of our shore excursions.

DAY 15
Hong Kong, China

Disembark this morning and transfer to the Hong Kong airport for your flight home. Or explore with our extension in this fascinating city.
