ARRIVE DEPART
DAY 1
Prague, Czech Republic

Welcome to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. This fascinating city straddles the Vltava River, with domes, cupolas, spires, and pinnacles highlighting its skyline.

DAY 2
Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is a 1,200-year-old city preserved in time. See its best-known treasures such as the Old Town's Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 and once the envy of all of Europe, Hradčany castle grounds, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague, guarded on both ends by a tower. Browse the shops for hand-cut crystal or art books and stroll through the Christmas markets. Rows of brightly decorated wooden huts sell Christmas tree ornaments, wooden toys, and Czech handicrafts. Get a little inner warmth with a cup of svařené víno (hot mulled wine) and a traditional hot sausage from one of the stalls. The beautifully decorated tree in the Old Town is an impressive sight. Christmas is the most important family holiday of the year in most Eastern European countries, and the Czechs begin their preparations and celebrations on December 4th with the feast of St. Barbara. (Breakfast)

DAY 3
Prague, Czech Republic
Nürnberg, Germany

After lunch, drive to Nuremberg, where your river cruise vessel is docked. Before dinner, meet your crew for a welcome reception. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4
Nürnberg, Germany

Although 90% of Nuremberg's Old Town suffered extensive damage during WWII, much of it has been restored to the glory it once knew as the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Choose either a guided sightseeing tour, and marvel at this thousand-year-old city's medieval fortifications, extraordinary Gothic churches, and the Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), or join a more specialized "Nuremberg rally grounds" tour. The Old Town is illuminated with festive lights and decorations, and the Christmas market is one of the biggest in Germany, and one of the most famous in the world. The market has 200 stall holders who offer traditional wares, including Nuremberg spicy gingerbread (Lebkuchen), fruit loaves, bakery goods and sweets, typical Christmas decorations, and Christmas tree ornaments. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5
Regensburg, Germany

Dating back to the time of the Celts around 500 BC, Regensburg is one of Germany's best preserved medieval cities. Established during the Holy Roman Empire, Regensburg has at least 1,300 listed buildings of "historic interest" since its Old City, as the only in Germany, was not bombed during World War II. Architectural highlights included on your guided sightseeing tour are the Old Town Hall, built in the 13th century, and Porta Pretoria, main gate to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. Wander through the city's lanes and alleys to discover the many mansions with high towers. Wealthy families built these towers to emphasize their status and wealth during the Middle Ages, and many still remain today. Walk across the 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), the oldest of its kind in Germany. Grab a beer and enjoy a snack at the Historische Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), one of Germany's oldest restaurants. This afternoon is free to explore on your own or to visit the Regensburg Christmas market. The tempting aromas of mulled wine, sweet roasted almonds, sausages and gingerbread create an unforgettable atmosphere. Before dinner we'll introduce you to some of Germany's famous beers. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 6
Passau, Germany

Uniquely located where the Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers converge, Passau is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful patrician houses. St. Stephan's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Baroque architecture, houses one of the world's largest church organs with more than 17,000 pipes. Take in the highlights on the included guided walk through this charming town, and find out much more about the "City of Three Rivers". Afterward, set sail for Linz, where you arrive in the evening. Alternatively, you might like to join a full-day optional excursion to Salzburg to see some of the popular Sound of Music sites, find out how mice caused the composition of the famous Silent Night Christmas carol, and learn how the Austrians celebrate Christmas. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 7
Melk, Austria
Vienna, Austria

This morning, enjoy a guided visit of Melk's magnificent 11th-century Benedictine abbey, one of Europe's largest monasteries. The abbey houses an ornate library with over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. Words cannot describe the splendor of the church with its frescoed ceilings, stunning high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola. The view you have from the terrace of the abbey over the Danube and surrounding countryside is breathtaking! During lunchtime, cruise through the picturesque Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pass the magnificent Baroque Stiftskirche with its blue façade, the landmark of Dürnstein, before arriving in Vienna this evening. Known as the "City of Music", it inspired the creative genius of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. An optional concert is available tonight. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 8
Vienna, Austria

Once the center of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Austria's magical capital on the blue Danube is a showcase of gilded architecture. This is home to the lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace complex with its Vienna Boys' Choir and dazzling Lipizzaner stallions; the Neo-Renaissance Vienna Opera House; and awe-inspiring St. Stephen's Cathedral—plus, countless other sights you'll see on your guided sightseeing tour. Visit the Christmas market in the town center for some last-minute gifts, and be sure to take a break and enjoy a piece of decadent Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in one of the classic Viennese coffee houses, historic institutions that helped shape Viennese culture! (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 9
Vienna, Austria

Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning. (Breakfast)

About Us

When designing its new ships, Avalon Waterways started with the traveler instead of the ship. This is a river cruise company that invites innovation, imagination and a relentless desire to create a smart use of space be its guide. The result? More space. Bigger views. More comfort … All thanks to one-of-a-kind Panorama SuitesSM on the industry’s only Suite Ships®. The Suite Ships of Avalon are revolutionizing the river cruise industry. For instance, on these signature vessels, Avalon brings an unprecedented level of thoughtfulness and attention to detail to every aspect of the Panorama Suites, providing travelers an oasis to escape to, not escape from. Even better? Avalon doesn’t offer travelers just a few Panorama Suites on each ship. Instead, 80 percent of the guest rooms on Suite Ships are Panorama Suite (they’re 30 percent larger than the average river cruise room). In designing its ships, Avalon has refused to see space as a barrier. That fact couldn’t be truer when looking at the company’s inspired indoor/outdoor space. For instance, Avalon’s Open-Air Balconies®, a completely new concept, make full use of the intended balcony experience – in any weather condition, in any season – without compromising room space. How? Giant wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows with a 7-foot opening. Avalon has considered every detail of the cruise experience. But perhaps it’s what the company hasn’t done that makes it so unique. It hasn’t filled ships to capacity with people. In fact, because the river cruise line made its rooms so spacious, there’s more room for less people. Simply put, Avalon Waterways is built differently
