“I travel to learn, to expand, and to embrace life and cultures. I will not be a frog who lives at the bottom of the well. There is life and adventure to be experienced far beyond the aperture of the well!” – Tony Chi
Tony Chi is responsible for creating some of the hotel and restaurant world’s most photographed interiors, from Rosewood London’s bold black-and-white-accented lobby to the sleek lines of sky-high Park Hyatt Shanghai.
Tony’s 5 Travel Essentials:
  1. Two scarves in a carrying case. Always protect your neck. It is through your neck that you get illnesses.
  2. A tea bottle and unfermented green tea.
  3. A notebook.
  4. Reading material. Some recent books: Culture Care by Makoto Fujimura, Inferno by Dan Brown, and Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh.
  5. Francis Klein or Morgenthal Frederics sunglasses
Tony’s Favorite Places:
Tokyo is visually rich. You see the heritage, a thousand years all together at once. I admire the
architecture, the social structure. The society is so organized and intriguing.
There is nothing more majestic than approaching a city by water. Venice is a walking city, a pedestrian city. In Venice, earth and water coexist like the sun and the moon.
I adore the humbleness of Taipei, my birthplace. When I go there, I always have a sense of coming home.
Argentina is my home in the south for the last eight years and my favorite destination. There is a great sense of the past intertwining with a beautifully slow progression forward. I love most of all the genuine warmth of the people and the land.
One hotel I admire greatly is Cuzco’s Inkaterra. It has a design with a local Peruvian heritage and materials. The operating philosophy involves the Inca/Peruvian tradition of hospitality. It is one of the most well-designed hotels I’ve ever stayed in.
