Armchair Traveler Diaries: Crescenzo Gargano’s Dispatch from the Amalfi Coast

The director of sales and marketing at Hotel Santa Caterina, a family-owned property on the Amalfi Coast, is spending time with family and rooting for Italy’s recovery.

What is life like for you right now?
I’m based on the Amalfi Coast, and being here reminds me of how beautiful life is!

Where are you working these days?
Like a lot of people around the world, I’m at home, on what I call “smart working mode.”

What’s your typical day like now?
I still go through my normal routines, except now there are a lot of virtual meetings to attend with hotel colleagues and other people I collaborate with around the world.

What do you do to stay sane?
When going out, I use all required protective gear and practice social distancing. Following these preventative measures makes me feel safe and sane.

What are you watching, reading, listening to?
I’m listening to a lot of Italian music from the 1970s and 1980s. Also, I’m currently reading a fantastic book called Freedom by Jonathan Franzen – highly recommended.

What travel plans have you put on hold for the pandemic?
I had to cancel trips to Vienna, Mexico, Las Vegas, and Russia.

Where do you want to go when travel is possible again?
Without a doubt I want to support my country and visit Italy from north to south.

The part of your hotel you most like to show travelers.
The garden area is one of my favorites. It’s full of beautiful flowers, plants, lemons, and vegetables – many of which are used in the hotel restaurants!

A favorite travel memory that’s top of mind right now?
I’ll never forget the safari that I went on with Singita in South Africa.

Your best feel-good moment since all this started?
It’s been incredible to spend extra time with my wife, daughter, and son.
