Stash the phone and get some space: From remote Alaskan shores to Russia’s Kamchatka wilderness, these destinations will transport you off the grid.

After weeks of self-quarantine (but who’s counting?), we’ll admit we might be a little more attached to our phones and gadgets than usual. “Technology has brought us many great advances,” says Jeremy McCarthy, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s director of spa and wellness. “But the expectations for instant communication and the increasing pace of change in the world can have negative impacts on our well-being.” The next time you settle in for a meandering scroll through Instagram, consider using that time instead to dream up a future digital detox vacation. Switch from screen to serene with a few of our favorite adventures and retreats to help you truly break away.

Alaskan Coastline

On select expedition ships, travelers forgo Wi-Fi for the chance to engage with wildlife and landscapes in unprecedented ways. From Zodiac outings and whale-spotting to kayaking past sea lions and hiking to the Mendenhall Glacier, no one misses surfing YouTube nature videos on their phone.

Costa Rican Jungle

Several eco-resorts nestled in Costa Rica’s rain-forest canopy have always focused on tranquility and seclusion, but now detox packages make it official. Guests can hand over phones and laptops to be placed in resort safes and plug into nature with activities such as bird-watching walks, open-air yoga classes, and soaks in private, mineral-hot-springs plunge pools. Thermal-water facials and hot-stone massages add to the relaxation.

Secluded Safaris

Many African safari operators have “modernized” with Internet connectivity, but off-grid camps in Botswana are excellent for getting away from it all. Trips can include walking safaris in the Okavango Delta, a wetland profuse with hippos and elephants in the country’s north, or overland and canoe explorations of the Selinda Spillway, a river system known for intimate big-game sightings.

Kamchatka Wilderness

Few places are more remote and sparsely inhabited than Kamchatka, a peninsula in Russia’s far northeast reaches. Tour operators specializing in remote destinations can take travelers deep into this backcountry with activities such as four-wheel-drive excursions, hikes to volcanoes, helicopter flights to geothermal fields, and casting for monster rainbow and steelhead trout on untouched rivers.

Miami Spas

The antidote for the #southbeach overload: Miami resorts’ digital detoxes, where guests can opt to surrender their phones upon check-in and spread out in spacious suite accommodations stocked with baskets of puzzles and games instead of TVs. Spa consultations can provide tips on how to manage technology in life, while activities such as yoga, singing bowl sessions, and massages ensure relaxation.
