Arrive in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, and transfer to your luxurious hotel.
Day 2
Bangkok, Thailand
Belmond La Résidence D'angkor Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Bangkok:
Discover Wat Pho temple, with its massive reclining Buddha statue, and listen to the musical sound of coins dropping into brass offering bowls, following your welcome briefing. Then, Ride Like a Local on a tuk-tuk around the sprawling Grand Palace. Explore the ancient Siamese court, home to Thailand's most important shrine, the green-jade Emerald Buddha. Next, gather for a light lunch aboard a traditional wooden rice barge. Cruise the quiet Chao Phraya River in a relaxed atmosphere, taking in the wonderful views. Later, fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, and transfer to your traditional, Khmer-style boutique hotel.
Day 3
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Belmond La Résidence D'angkor Breakfast, Lunch
Angkor Wat:
Set off to explore the extraordinary temples of Angkor, a breathtaking city lost in the jungle and Cambodia's most prized national treasure. Enter the monumental gates of Angkor Thom, where 54 gods and 54 demons are represented in an epic tug of war. Visit the Bayon Temple, with its 172 large-scale faces wearing enchanting smiles, as well as the terraces of the Elephant and Leper Kings. Later, walk ancient Ta Prohm Temple, an Indiana Jones-worthy fantasy with its crumbling towers and massive tree roots. Stay at Angkor Wat until sunset, marveling as the diminishing, moody light washes over this unforgettable, faraway world.
Day 4
Kampong Cham, Cambodia
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Kampong Cham:
Drive through the lush and scenic Cambodian countryside to Kampong Cham, where you board A&K's private charter of allsuite ‘Mekong Princess,' your boutique river cruiser for the next seven nights. Tonight, enjoy a Khmer-inspired dinner.
Day 5
Cruising the Mekong | Life in a Local Village
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Cruising the Mekong:
Explore the charming town of Angkor Ban, where you enjoy the opportunity to glimpse into the lives of local people, starting with a visit to a family home. Continue to the village school to observe the classroom experience. Stop briefly at the local monastery complex on your walk back to the ship.
Day 6
Cruising the Mekong | Phnom Penh, Pearl of Asia
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Cruising the Mekong:
Today, Ride Like a Local through Phnom Penh, Cambodia's lush and alluring capital city, on an engaging cyclo tour. Discover the ornate Royal Palace and wander past huge stupas, spirit houses and potted flowers en route to the famous Silver Pagoda, home of Cambodia's Emerald Buddha and the diamond-encrusted Maitreya Buddha. Visit the National Museum this afternoon. Later, learn about Cambodia's darker days as you walk the notorious killing fields of Choeung Ek. Sense the somber atmosphere of this, one of history's most infamous places. Then, leave behind that bleak period in Cambodian history to attend an uplifting performance by children from a local orphanage of Apsara, the country's national dance, which you enjoy on the sun deck of your ship.
Day 7
Cruising the Mekong | Splendors of a Hidden Port
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Cruising the Mekong:
Sail into Vietnam and cruise downstream to little-known Hong Ngu, which nimble ‘Mekong Princess' can enter with ease. In this place few Westerners have ever been, experience an especially friendly welcome, followed by a visit to a local family home, where you watch the weaving of kormas (traditional Khmer scarves), which are exported to Cambodia. Later, explore a local temple dedicated to Hòa Hóa, a unique Vietnamese religion.
Day 8
Cruising the Mekong | Cao Dai
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Cruising the Mekong:
Begin the day with a sampan (wooden boat) ride to the riverside market town of Long Xuyen. Walk the bustling market and then visit the Cao Dai temple, where a compelling Vietnamese religion was founded as an amalgam of different beliefs to harmonize relations between various followers. Later this afternoon, sail to the village of Thot Not. Here, ride a xe loi (motorized trishaw) through the village to a sanctuary filled with the cacophony of birdsong. Following a short walk into the sanctuary, climb the steps to the viewing platform, where an incredible view spans treetops and the nesting area of protected egrets.
Day 9
Cruising the Mekong | Remote Buddhist Temple Visit
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Cruising the Mekong:
Rise early for a sampan cruise through the fascinating Cai Rang floating market near Can Tho. Weave between the many boats that sail into the market each morning to sell produce and goods. Grab your camera: This is the place to capture brilliant photographs of a dynamic market life. Fresh coconut water, the Vietnamese “anti-aging drink,” refreshes you before a stop at a local factory to see the making of instant noodles. Back on board ‘Mekong Princess,' sail deeper into regions of the Mekong Delta rarely touched by travellers to see Phuoc Hau Pagoda. At this important Buddhist temple that dates back to the fourth century, interact with local monks to learn about their daily life and practices.
Day 10
Cruising the Mekong | Life Among the Mangroves
'mekong Princess' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Cruising the Mekong:
Today, board a sampan to wend your way through a channel lined with mangroves, whose tangled roots provide a sheltered habitat for the smallest denizens of the river's ecosystem, for a visit to a local coconut candy maker. After watching the candymaking process, board an intimate, two-seater boat for a cruise through lush, narrow creeks lined with Nipah palm, a native species and the only one of its kind adapted to the mangrove habitat.
Day 11
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
None Breakfast, Dinner
Ho Chi Minh City:
Unlike other river ships that are forced to dock outside of Saigon, the swift ‘Mekong Princess' takes you right into the heart of this lively, evocative metropolis, which today goes by the name of Ho Chi Minh City. Recently experiencing a resurgence of art and culture, the city is a hub of activity. Bid farewell to the crew of ‘Mekong Princess' and set out to discover the city's colonial legacy, including the Central Post Office, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House. Continue your exploration with a tour of the History Museum and the colorful Ben Thanh market. Then, drive past the former U.S. embassy building, from which helicopters carried off the last American personnel remaining on site before the city fell to the Vietcong in April of 1975. Observe as you go, the vibrant, bustling energy of a people on the move, wholeheartedly embracing the trappings of western culture, as giant images of “Father Ho” gaze out at streets streaming with the latest-model luxury automobiles. Tonight, gather with your fellow guests for a special farewell dinner.
Day 12
DEPART HO CHI MINH CITY
None Breakfast
Depart Ho Chi Minh City:
After breakfast, begin a Cu Chi and Hanoi post-tour extension or transfer to the airport to depart for home.

First, Ross Voss is the best guide anywhere. We learned so much in a casual, conversational way. His background and knowledge enables him to cover all aspects of Israel: the ruins, the history, the geology, the flora and fauna, the people, the political/governance situation. Ross took us to some of his favorite restaurants which we loved. Also, Simon was extremely helpful and engaging. He was able to extend our stay at the King David because of our late flight home.

We were pleased with the choices of hotels and tours we had with A&K. Our tour guides were very well informed and interesting and competent. Our only problem arose with the descriptions on our itinerary. They differed a bit from what we were expecting. I feel that the itinerary they sent us was a standardized description for everyone, but not us explicitly. Other than that, our trip was full of fun moments, great hotels and great restaurant recommendations and I would use A&K again.

We spent a couple of great weeks in Africa. The service was great as we were escorted from the time we left until we boarded the plane for home. We experienced many different accommodations in our travels and none were unsatisfactory. Our traveling companions needed electric power all night for a breathing machine, and were supplied with electricity everywhere. One camp could not supply electricity all night, and we were moved to a site that could. Very good service.

We used A&K for a tour of South America. The accommodations and tour guides were excellent. However, our tour ended in Brazil on a national holiday weekend. The crowds at Iguazu Falls and Rio were substantial causing long delays. For example, our viewing of the "Christ the Redeemer" statue was re-scheduled from Saturday to Sunday and it rained constantly that day (our last) causing poor visibility, so we were unable to see this most important site.

Mediocre Morocco

By: M in London

Reviewed on: 10 Mar 2014

We just returned from a weeks vacation in Morocco with A and K.  The itinerary was fine and the country is extremely beautiful.  However, we did not not have a great guide.  The first two days he took us to lunch at these places where there were only tourists and the server REFUSED to give us a menu.  We were inclined to trust that the guide took us to a decent place so we went with the 'set' menu only to find that we were horribly ripped off.  A similar scenario happened the next day until we complained to A and K.  The restaurant problem improved but after that there were a few other situations where we felt ripped off.  Additionally, the guide's knowledge and general interest in our having a good time seemed low.  Bottom line: Others had told us that when in Morocco it seems like you have to constantly be on guard and we were hoping that going with a company like A and K would have better shielded us from this.

Recent trip to Egypt

My wife and I just returned from an extraordinary trip to Egypt.  My advice: take this trip at the next available opportunity.  A&K lived up to their gold standard reputation.  Their ogranization, support, professionalism, lodging, food--all excellent.  What attracted us most were the sites chosen to visit, and they were, of course, spectacular.  Our Egyptologist/guide, Wael, was superb:  enormously knowledgeable, passionate, funny, great rapport--in other words, the best kind of teacher.  What we had not anticipated was the collegiality and energy of our group.  We woke up each morning looking forward to spending time with these people.  This was a wonderful trip.

A & K are extremely professional. Nothing but 1st rate service each time we are in their care. They are very good at changes on the fly if necessary. Their staff are knowledgeable, very polite, and come as advertised. They DO know the secrets of the cities we have shared with them, and St. Petersburg is no exception. Once again, true to the adage, you get what you pay for. They do come at premium rates, that are justified by the premium service. On a trip such as we took it is easy to compare prices and services with other guests that took "similar" ground tours. While we did pay considerably more, we also got considerably more. One other great thing was the fact that they handled all Russian visa requirements, removing that burden from us. Thanks A & K for making a great trip even greater.

OMG - a trip of a LIFETIME! All of the representatives we met were friendly, helpful, and informed. All transfers and accommodations were there when they needed to be and we never were left not knowing what was going on or what to expect. The reserves were beautiful and each one was unique to the other. If I was going to give any suggestions, it would be to provide air conditioning in the vehicles when traveling from one destination to another. Not being used to the climate, we were pretty uncomfortable a lot of the time. And at Governors Camp, if they could provide a little fan to be used when needed. There too, we had times that was uncomfortable. It was a delightful trip, one that we will recommend to everyone and already have. We also have recommended your tour company over and over again. And would definitely travel with A&K to other destinations as well due to the high quality of service. WONDERFUL TRIP! Thanks again to all.

Barge trip - Renaissance Loire/Burgundy

This was a lovely trip. Not having done a barge trip we did not have specific expectations but did want to see the more rural and traditional side of France. The trip accomplished that. The barge was comfortable, the crew very responsive and helpful and the food and wine very good. We would do it again. One small suggestion - perhaps the barge could offer some sort of picnic lunch that the guests could take with them on shore excursions as opposed to returning to the barge for lunch. We are walkers and bikers so the ability to take lunch and meet the barge at the evening mooring would be nice. In fairness, I am confident that the crew would have responded to such a request - we didn't think to ask until too late in the trip but might have had the option been offered earlier. That was our fault, not the barge's. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and will probably do another one.

It was small but "luxury" it was not, (3 Hotels were what I felt I paid for and expected) the other 3 were horrible hotels with the lowest class of rooms, including the smell of sewage and street noise all night long. We had guide who was barely understandable and seemed disinterested and not connected to her work like she was going through the motions, and a poorly planned overdone trip which had as riding in a bus for hours on end to get from one tourist stop to the other. We came back exhausted, disappointed and glad to be home. No value for money here.

If you want a trip with ALL of the details taken care of for you, go with A&K. If you want extremely knowledgeable tour guides who tailor your trip to your wants and needs, go with A&K. They put together our trip to Peru with wonderful places that we never would have found on our own. They provide a detailed itinerary in advance but are perfectly willing to change the plans on the fly during your trip. The guides all spoke perfect English and were extremely well versed in the local culture. We will definitely use A&K again.

An excellent trip with outstanding guides. Our tour leader, Gabor Kovacs, was one of the best--perhaps THE best--tour leader we ever have had. Although we had some reservations about the beauty of this area, we were surprised with the beauty of the entire area we visited. Of course, the history of Berlin hade the trip even more enjoyable.

Outstanding! Personal guides is the way to go, Everyone was extremely knowledgeable and very organized and I don't think we could have seen nearly so much without their expert guidance, On top of that, they were ready to do whatever they could to maximize our experience. Every one of them was tops and it was obvious A&K has very high standards.
