Experience Germany’s Enchanting Winter and Holiday Traditions

  • Flying Santa Claus: At Hamburg’s historic Christmas market, a high-wire artist, dressed as Santa, flies above the market three times a day in a sleigh.
  • The Birthplace of the Glass Bubble: For 175 years, artisans in Lauscha (a charming town in the Thuringian Forest) have created delicate Christmas ornaments. Visit workshops to experience this UNESCO-listed Intangible Cultural Heritage firsthand.
  • The Living Advent Calendar: Each afternoon during Advent in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Quedlinburg, the door of a half-timbered house opens to reveal a delightful Christmas scene.
  • Whistle Bottom Horses: In the Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden, these hand-carved and vividly painted toy horses have adorned Christmas trees for over 500 years.
  • Winter Cabbage Tradition: Following a lively game of “Bosseln" (road bowling) in Northern Germany, participants gather to enjoy a hearty meal featuring green cabbage (kale), potatoes, and sausage.
  • Ice Bathing & Sauna Wagons: Each February in the resort town of Binz, participants enjoy an ice bath in the Baltic along with a cozy sauna right on the beach.

Expert Tip

For a rich experience, visit the Dresden Striezelmarkt. Germany's oldest Christmas market dating from 1434, it features the world’s tallest Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid and an impressive festive arch.
