VIRTUOSO® PREVIEW PROPERTY OFFERS A HOST OF GAMES TO KEEP GUESTS ENTERTAINED
NEW YORK (December 9, 2010) – Just in time for the “greatest snow on earth,” Virtuoso® Preview property, Montage Deer Valley, opens its doors today. As part of Virtuoso’s prestigious Preview program, Montage Deer Valley has access to the network’s leading luxury travel advisors and their clientele, and joins the ranks of world-class hotels and resorts that have joined Virtuoso to increase visibility and add a competitive edge to their marketing campaigns in their opening stages. As the 2010/2011 ski season commences, Montage Deer Valley offers a true ski-in/ski-out resort with the finest amenities, event spaces, a beautiful new Spa Montage and a strong emphasis on playful getaways with Daly’s Pub & Rec - a highlight of the new property.
Daly's Pub & Rec, a new American gastro-pub at the Montage Deer Valley is one of three dining venues at the lodge-style Mountain Craftsman resort, and offers guests an inviting, open kitchen with four regulation bowling lanes, billiards tables, an English darts room, a Wii Lounge, plus nostalgic arcade games. Here, Chris Hamaway, Director of Marketing & Sales, Montage Deer Valley offers his tips and tricks to the inner-workings of Daly's Pub & Rec games:
Bowling:
- Ten-pin bowling, the modern form of the game that was first played in the time of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt about 3200 BC, is the most popular version in America
- It’s all about striking out: that is, bowling a “strike” by knocking down all 10 pins with one roll of the bowling ball
- A “perfect game,” the highest possible score of 300, is achieved by bowling 12 strikes in a row in a single 10-frame game
- “Ice and rug” refers to the oil pattern on the wooden bowling lane: “ice” is the first 40-45 feet that is conditioned with oil and where the ball rolls and skids; “rug” is the last 15-20 feet of the un-oiled lane, where the ball generates friction and hooks
The four bowling lanes at Montage Deer Valley’s Daly’s Pub & Rec are open 11 AM to 10 PM daily and rented in hourly increments (including shoe rental) based on group size: (2-3 people: $50 for 50 minutes/4-6 people: $80 for 80 minutes); to reserve, call Daly’s bowling attendant or the hotel concierge.
English Darts:
- This traditional pub game dates back to the 1300s in England and remains a popular game of skill
- You score points by throwing each of three darts at a board divided into 20 sections numbered 1-20, earning the corresponding points or double or triple the points depending the spot in the section on where the dart lands
- The goal is to reduce your starting score of 501 or 301 to zero, so having a good command of subtraction is a big plus; forfeits are required if you lower your score below zero
- “American Darts” refers to a simplified version of the game with a board based on baseball and scoring that begins at zero and adds points for throws in each of nine “innings”
Daly’s Pub & Rec darts room is available from 11 AM to 10 PM daily, offered complimentary on a first-come basis (limit one hour). The Dart Room may be reserved for private parties during dinner hours, 5 PM to 10 PM daily.
Billiards:
- “Billiards” is the general term used to refer to sports played with a cue stick and dates back to the 1500s in England
- Notable enthusiasts through the years include William Shakespeare (known for his famous line, “Let’s to Billiards,” from Anthony & Cleopatra), Marie Antoinette, George Washington, Mark Twain, Bob Hope, Babe Ruth and Jackie Gleason
- At Montage Deer Valley, the sport could also be called “pool,” as the resort’s two tables feature six pockets, designed for games such as “eight-ball,” the world’s most widely played cue sport
- The tables are rectangular and covered in “felt” that is actually woven wool or wool/nylon baize; tables designed for tavern play typically feature cloth that is more durable and plays “slower” (provides more friction) than tables for home play
- American-style pool balls feature two “suits” of balls, seven stripes and seven solids, as well as an 8-ball and a cue ball, that are “racked” by a triangle before start of play
- The eight-ball goal: claim a suit, pocket all seven balls of the suit and then legally pocket the 8-ball to win before your opponent can; many variations, such as nine-ball, three-ball, one-ball (considered the “chess” version to eight-ball’s “checkers” approach), bank pool and speed pool, can also be played
Daly’s Pub & Rec billiards tables are available from 11 AM to 10 PM daily on a first-come basis. Tables are rented for $15 per hour and can be reserved by contacting Daly’s Pub & Rec.
Wii Lounge:
- The resort offers an engaging lounge outfitted with four Nintendo Wii™ game consoles that enable people of all ages to play a variety of motion-controlled games, with high definition action displayed on 55-inch flat screens
- Available games include Wii Sports (practice your Bowling before hitting the lanes), Wii Fit Plus, Super Mario Bros Wii, DJ Hero 2, Just Dance 2, NBA Jam, Wii Party and more (games pre-loaded by the resort).
- Up to 4 people can play one game; all game software and controllers are provided
Daly’s Pub & Rec Wii Lounge is 11 AM to 10 PM daily, with consoles offered complimentary on a first-come basis (limit one hour).
Arcade Games:
- The resort also features hundreds of nostalgic arcade games located on seven separate machines including Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga and Frogger. Arcade games are offered to guests on a complimentary basis from 11 AM to 10 PM (one hour limit).
